2018

On the 28th of August of 1612, Juan Vivas de Canamas, the ambassador of king Philip III in Genoa, commissioned the Genoese sculptor Giuseppe Carlone to carve a large statue made of Polveracio white marble representing, according to the drawing attached to the contract, the figure of a knight. The portrait depicts none other than the Duke of Lerma, whose marble effigy was intended to preside in his castle and palace of the Valencian city of Denia and was installed there at the end of 1613. In this sense, the work is historically framed in the process of renovation of the castle that Lerma began at the end of the 16th century and that included the incorporation of this exclusive artistic comm…

El caso "Relecturas" = Museum Networks from a Feminist Perspective. The case of «Relecturas»

2020

The stigma of feminism: disclosures and silences regarding female disadvantage in the video game industry in US and Finnish media stories

2021

This article examines how the issue of gender, particularly women’s (under)representation in the video game industry, is framed in US and Finnish media. Building on the notion of stigma surrounding feminism, the article examines discourse practices as acts of managing the image of feminism. The findings illustrate five stigma management strategies that offer the possibility of maintaining socially accepted ways of discussing gender inequality and portraying women in mainstream media. Using critical discourse analysis, the paper addresses how the use of these stigma management strategies connects with different contemporary feminisms. The strategies used and their ideological backgrounds var…

Gene expression in TGFbeta-induced epithelial cell differentiation in a three-dimensional intestinal epithelial cell differentiation model

2006

Abstract Background The TGFβ1-induced signal transduction processes involved in growth and differentiation are only partly known. The three-dimensional epithelial differentiation model, in which T84 epithelial cells are induced to differentiate either with TGFβ1 or IMR-90 mesenchymal cell-secreted soluble factors, is previously shown to model epithelial cell differentiation seen in intestine. That model has not been used for large scale gene expression studies, such as microarray method. Therefore the gene expression changes were studied in undifferentiated and differentiated three-dimensional T84 cultures with cDNA microarray method in order to study the molecular changes and find new play…

Regulatory cytokine gene polymorphisms and risk of colorectal carcinoma.

2006

It is well established that cancer arises in chronically inflamed tissue, and this is particularly notable in the gastrointestinal tract. Classic examples include Helicobacter pylori-associated gastric cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and inflammatory bowel disease-associated colorectal cancer. Growing evidence suggests that these associations might be not casual findings. Focusing on individual cytokines has generated evidence that anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-10 and transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) may have a complex role in gastrointestinal carcinogenesis. As an example, IL-10-deficient mice develop severe atrophic gastritis and a chronic enterocolitis, develo…

The societal contexts for sound and music computing: Research, education, industry, and socio-culture

2007

Abstract The paper addresses the various contexts that determine the societal framework for research in the field of sound and music computing. Four of these contexts are identified, namely, the research context, the educational context, the industrial context and the socio-cultural context. For each context, the major trends are analysed and summarized as short statements, thus providing a background in which the state-of-the-art and the challenges of sound and music research can be situated.
