Simulation of the dynamics of hard ellipsoids
2008
We study a system of uniaxial hard ellipsoids by molecular dynamics simulations, changing both the aspect-ratio X-0 (X-0 = a/b, where a is the length of the revolution axis and b is the length of the two other axes) and the packing fraction phi. We calculate the translational and rotational mean squared displacements, the translational D-trans and the rotational D-rot diffusion coefficients and the associated isodiffusivity lines in the phi - X-0 plane. For the first time, we characterize the cage effect through the logarithmic time derivative of log and log . These quantities exhibit a minimum if the system is supercooled and we show that, consistently with our previous findings, for large…
Comparative analysis of DNA breakage, chromosomal aberrations and apoptosis induced by the anti-herpes purine nucleoside analogues aciclovir, gancicl…
2002
Nucleoside analogues have been used in antiviral therapy and suicide cancer gene therapy. Therefore, it is of importance to compare their potential cytotoxic and genotoxic action. Using metabolically competent CHO cells expressing the thymidine kinase gene of herpes simplex virus type 1 (CHO-HSVtk cells) as a model system, the induction of DNA breaks was compared with the induction of structural chromosomal aberrations and apoptosis/necrosis after exposure to the anti-herpes nucleoside analogues aciclovir (ACV), ganciclovir (GCV) and penciclovir (PCV). After continuous treatment of CHO-HSVtk cells with the drugs, LD(10) in a colony-forming assay was 50, 0.5 and 1 microM for ACV, GCV and PCV…
Development of injectable and durable kefiran hydro-alcoholic gels.
2020
Injectable, in-situ forming kefiran gels have been developed for potential applications as implantable drug delivery devices or scaffolds for tissue regeneration. Concentrated solutions (4, 5 and 6%w) of kefiran, extracted from kefir grains, have been assessed in term of viscosity and injectability through G26 syringe needles, and for their ability to undergo gelation upon mixing with different alcohols. Propylene glycol (PG) has been selected as gelling agent because it ensures homogenous gelation in relatively short times (from few minutes up to 6 h). The investigation of the rheological behavior of kefiran/PG gels varying polymer concentration and temperature (25 degrees C and 37 degrees…
Gendering political conflict: the racialized and dehumanized use of gender on Facebook
2021
Although attacks against gendered others have proliferated around the world, there remains a paucity of research examining the gender-biased climate that normalizes and condones racialization and d...
Cinematic images of nation-ness: Space, time and gender inYoung Eagles(Estonia) andLāčplēsis(Latvia)
2012
ABSTRACTIn this article, I analyse cinematic time and space and their interaction, in which nation-ness is articulated as a unifying identity in the epic films Lācplēsis/Bear-Slayer (Latvia, Aleksandrs Rusteiķis, 1930) and Noored Kotkad/Young Eagles (Estonia, Theodor Luts, 1927, digitally remastered in 2008). In discussing the timespace organization of nation-ness in these films, I address representations of the political ‘birth of a nation’ and modern national identity. I discuss the ways in which the narratives in Young Eagles and Lācplēsis re-claim a traditional gender binary, predicated on a splitting and differentiating relationship with Otherness, embodied in the sexual threat of male…
Professional activism in journalism and education in gender equality through Twitter
2021
This article analyses professional activism by women journalists' organisations which, through their Twitter accounts, contribute to extend the value of equality between men and women, which is activism that embodies the ethical or deontological codes of this profession. The tweets of these groups not only propose improvements in the expression and writing of news, after reporting biased, stereotypical or denigrating uses of language by large Spanish media, but also recognise and applaud contents that dignify women or place them in the public sphere that they deserve. A content analysis methodology was followed by applying both quantitative and qualitative analyses to a sample of 7,424 twee…
NGF and TGF-beta mRNA expression during pregnancy in a rat corneal wound healing model.
2003
Background Growth factors seem to play a major role in corneal wound healing and TGF-beta seems to be associated with abnormal healing after corneal surgical procedures. Few studies have analysed the role of NGF and TGF-beta on corneal wound healing during pregnancy. The aim of the present study was to create an animal model to evaluate the expression of NGF and TGF-betas during corneal wound healing in two groups: control and pregnant rats. Methods Corneal mRNA for NGF and the three isoforms of TGF-beta were analysed by RT-PCR, in a time-course experiment on different days after epithelial wounding (2, 7, 14 days) in pregnant and control groups Results The results show high corneal mRNA ex…
Overview on photoreforming of biomass aqueous solutions to generate H2 in the presence of g-C3N4 based materials
2023
Photoreforming (PR) of biomass can be considered a viable technology under mild experimental conditions to produce hydrogen with a high reaction rate using compounds from renewable resources and waste materials. The application of biomass PR gives rise to both hydrogen generation and biomass waste valorization. The process could be scaled up to obtain hydrogen under natural sunlight irradiation, and research on polymeric carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based photocatalysts has been widely carried out in recent years. The non-metallic-based carbon nitride materials are economical and (photo)stable polymer semiconductors, and their physicochemical surface and electronic properties are optimal for obt…
Cutting Edge: TGF-β Signaling Is Required for the In Vivo Expansion and Immunosuppressive Capacity of Regulatory CD4+CD25+ T Cells
2004
Abstract Data regarding the role of TGF-β for the in vivo function of regulatory CD4+CD25+ T cells (Treg) are controversial. A transgenic mouse model with impaired TGF-β signaling specifically in T cells was used to assess the role of endogenous TGF-β for the in vivo function of CD4+CD25+ Treg in a murine model of colitis induced by dextran sulfate. Transfer of wild-type, but not transgenic CD4+CD25+ Treg was found to suppress colitis in wild-type mice. In addition, by transferring CFSE-labeled CD4+CD25+ Treg we could demonstrate that endogenous TGF-β promotes the expansion of CD4+CD25+ Treg in vivo. Transgenic mice themselves developed reduced numbers of peripheral CD4+CD25+ Treg and were …
T Cell-Specific Overexpression of TGFß1 Fails to Influence Atherosclerosis in ApoE-Deficient Mice
2013
Clinical data have indicated a negative correlation between plasma TGFß1 concentrations and the extent of atherosclerosis and have thus led to the hypothesis that the pleiotropic cytokine may have anti-atherogenic properties. T-cells are currently discussed to significantly participate in atherogenesis, but the precise role of adaptive immunity in atherogenesis remains to be elucidated. TGFß1 is known to strongly modulate the function of T-cells, however, inhibition of TGFß1 signalling in T-cells of atherosclerosis-prone knock-out mice failed to unequivocally clarify the role of the cytokine for the development of atherosclerosis. In the present study, we thus tried to specify the role of T…
