2013
ABSTRACT: Iconology , the important book of allegories and attributes compiled by Cesare Ripa in 1593, was a major source for understanding the symbolic art of the culture of the period. Its application affected the visual practice of arts and architecture. In Pajara (Fuerteventura. Canary Islands), there is a temple whose main facade draws on symbols that seem to be influenced by Ripa's work: elements of Nature and zoomorphic, animistic and material representations with a decided spiritual and cosmogonic charge. In the context of Baroque culture, the symbols recorded on the facade proclaim the triumph of the Reformed Church. KEY WORDS: Seventeenth Century Architecture. Iconography. Iconolo…
‘Mírate Los Pies Y Desharás La Rueda’. La Emblemática Y Las Novelas Ejemplares De Cervantes
2017
ABSTRACT: This study posits a number of possible crossroads useful for the the study of the relationship between emblematics and literature. It focuses specifically on the case of Cervantes, whose always elusive works defy any attempt to pigeonhole them in simple connections. Concretely, it offers a proposal for the analysis of emblematic structures in the Novelas ejemplares . The examples adduced attempt to illustrate the complex modes of dialogue between the narratives of Cervantes and the emblem, considering the latter as the most characteristic artifact of the symbolic culture of the 16th and 17th centuries. KEYWORDS: Emblematics; Cervantes; Novelas ejemplares ; Narratives; Golden Ag…
2015
ABSTRACT: This study analyzes the meaning of the impresa or device of the pomegranates, with the motto « Agro dulce », utilized by Henry IV (1425-1474), of the House of Trastamara, King of Castile from 1454 until his death. By means of a review of vestiges that remain of the device, especially in architectonic elements, I postulate that the pomegranate may have been used as the family impresa of the House of Trastamara and their descendants. This, it seems, can be deduced from the pictura of the device in several personal imprese of relatives who lived in the sixteenth century. KEYWORDS: pomegranate, devices, royal clemency, Henry IV, Catholic Monarchs, Catherine of Aragon, Charles V, Phili…

An approach towards the visual culture of the Barroque festival : portraits of visual presences
2014
ABSTRACT: In this study I deal briefly with some issues related to the visual culture of the Baroque festival; and more specifically, with those related to the royal portraits that were on display during the festive activities. To this end I place special emphasis on developing the concepts of presence, body and virtuality –as applied to those works or visual objects– from an approach that offers a new theoretical framework, namely, that which involves «image studies» or «visual culture studies» (Bildwissenschaft, Bildanthropologie y visual studies). KEYWORDS: Baroque Festival, Royal Portraits, Presence, Body, Virtuality, Image Studies.
2014
ABSTRACT: If in the French original of Le Chevalier delibere one can appreciate the intimate relationship between the poetic text and the gorgeous engravings that accompany and illustrate it, in the tranlated version of Acuna this association is even stronger, to the point that one might say that the translator not only translates the French text linguistically, but also the book's images. This results then in a fusion between text and images that points clearly towards an emblematic vision in the book.
2020
ABSTRACT: The question about the meaning of the suffering of the innocent is inescapable. In the biblical tradition, this subject is treated in a particularly profound way in the book of Job. Paradoxically, this book is little known. This article describes the elements that articulate this book according to its complex structure and its poetic peculiarity. That understanding helps to explain the various interpretations and re-readings that this work experienced in Judaism of the pre-Christian period, in the origin of Christianity and in later Rabbinism. Since the central theme is always current, this work helps readers to better read this biblical book and makes them understand its importan…
2020
ABSTRACT: The allegory of the body as a prison of the soul was visually depicted as a skeleton that imprisons a figure with childish features. One of the earliest examples of this image is the emblem «Infelix ego homo!» included in Herman Hugo’s Pia Desideria (1624); however the pictura was incorporated in other media and contexts allowing its survival even to the end of the 19th century. In Mexico, it evolved from an ascetic-moralistic book to a popular pamphlet of ghostly apparitions revealed in dreams. How did this emblem –based on Neoplatonic philosophy– evolve from a book written in Latin to a popular nineteenth century pamphlet? Did it conserve part of its original meaning?

2019
ABSTRACT: The difficult situation of women in the Modern Period, marked by the strong patriarchal and androcentric character of the official culture and ideology of the moment, and their high degree of social marginalization, has been frequently analysed through various literary sources such as theatre, fiction or travel literature, collections of proverbs and sermons, and, above all, moral and doctrinal texts. However, for some time now, a new approach to the issue has been attempted which has proven to be of singular importance when observing the effect of the aforementioned directives of the dominant ideology on the familial and social role of women: illustrated symbolic literature.
