The fate of subducted oceanic slabs in the shallow mantle: Insights from boron isotopes and light element composition of metasomatized blueschists fr…

2012

Abstract Serpentine muds from South Chamorro Seamount (SCS), drilled during ODP Leg 195 at Site 1200 contain metamafic clasts that experienced blueschist-facies metamorphism (including the critical mineral assemblage pumpellyite – Na-amphibole – epidote). These schists represent fragments from the actual slab–mantle interface at ~ 27 km depth. Their heterogeneous lithology with a metasomatic character indicates significant mobility of major elements in the Mariana forearc, a region of melange formation as it can also be observed in onland exposures such as the Catalina Schist. As the Mariana forearc blueschists show no late stage alteration they permit the direct study of material transfer …

The human peroxisome in health and disease: The story of an oddity becoming a vital organelle

2013

Abstract Since the first report by Rhodin in 1954, our knowledge on mammalian microbodies/peroxisomes has known several periods. An initial two decades period (1954–1973) has contributed to the biochemical individualisation of peroxisomes as a new class of subcellular organelles (de Duve, 1965). The corresponding research period failed to define a clear role of mammalian peroxisomes in vital functions and intermediary metabolism, explaining why feeling that peroxisomes might be in the human cell oddities has prevailed during several decades. The period standing from 1973 to nowadays has progressively removed this cell oddity view of peroxisomes by highlighting vital function and metabolic r…

In Vitro Release of Lectins From Phallusia mamillata Hemocytes After Their Fractionation on a Density Gradient

1993

Hemocytes were fractionated by centrifugation on a discontinuous Percoll density gradient from the hemolymph of Phallusia mamillata. Results obtained from microcultures of the fractionated hemocytes, sugar-inhibition experiments, SDS-PAGE, and immunoblotting indicate that “compartment cells” release cellular-type (CL) lectins that are specific for α-lactose and lactulose. The released lectins have the same properties as the CL lectins that were previously isolated from sonicated unfractionated hemocytes, but they differ in terms of some molecular and immunological properties from the lectins (SL) purified from the serum. SLs were never found in the supernatants from microcultures of the fra…

Phytotoxic Lignans from Artemisia arborescens

2018

A systematic bioassay-guided fractionation of methylene chloride extracts of the aerial part of Artemisia arborescens was performed in order to identify its phytotoxic compounds Two lignans were isolated, sesamin and ashantin, that inhibited growth of Agrostis stolonifera (bentgrass), a monocot, and Lactuca sativa (lettuce), a dicot, at 1 mg mL–1. In a dose-response screening of these lignans for growth inhibition against Lemna paucicostata (duckweed), ashantin was the most active with an IC50 of ca. 224 μM. The mode of action of these compounds is still unknown. In mosquito larvicidal bioassays the pure compounds sesamin and ashantin did not cause mortality at the highest dose of 125 mg/L…

Isolation and identification of the antibacterial compounds from Helichrysum stoechas.

1991

Fractionation of the dicholoromethane extract of the aerial parts of Helichrysum stoechas yielded seven isolates (1-7), which exhibited varying antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. Pure compounds 1-3 have been previously reported in the same species and 4 and 5 were identified as italipyrone and plicatipyrone, previously isolated from H. italicum and H. plicatum. The two other isolates are helipyrone (6) and homoarenol (7) mixed with related substances. Compound 6c (4,4'-dihydroxy-5,6,5',6'-tetramethyl-3,3'-methylen-di-pyr-2-one) and 6b helipyrone with one methyl substitution, have not been previously reported in other species.

Distribution of rare earth elements in marine sediments from the Strait of Sicily (western Mediterranean Sea): Evidence of phosphogypsum waste contam…

2010

Concentrations of rare earth elements (REE), Y, Th and Sc were recently determined in marine sediments collected using a box corer along two onshore–offshore transects located in the Strait of Sicily (Mediterranean Sea). The REE + Y were enriched in offshore fine-grained sediments where clay minerals are abundant, whereas the REE + Y contents were lower in onshore coarse-grained sediments with high carbonate fractions. Considering this distribution trend, the onshore sediments in front of the southwestern Sicilian coast represent an anomaly with high REE + Y concentrations (mean value 163.4 lg g 1) associated to high Th concentrations (mean value 7.9 lg g 1). Plot of shale-normalized REE + …

Development of pipette tip-based poly(methacrylic acid-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) monolith for the extraction of drugs of abuse from oral flu…

2019

Abstract In this work, a monolithic polymer based on poly(methacrylic acid-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (MAA-co-EDMA) was prepared inside 200 μL pipette tips for the extraction of drug of abuse from oral fluid samples. After an appropriate surface tip modification, several polymerization mixtures with different monomer/cross-linker ratios, and percentage of porogen were studied. The most appropriate monolith to easily flow organic solvents and oral fluid samples was prepared with a MAA/EDMA ratio of 8:92 wt/wt and dodecanol containing 10 wt% toluene, as porogenic solvent. Parameters affecting the extraction procedure were evaluated and the monolith was characterized in terms of bindin…

Preparative fractionation and characterization of polycarbonate/eugenol-siloxane copolymers

2002

Bisphenol-A polycarbonate/eugenol-siloxane copolymers were fractionated at the preparative scale by the continuous polymer fractionation (CPF) technique. It is the first example of copolymer fractionation by CPF. The distribution of siloxane species across the fractions was assessed for copolymers differing in initial siloxane concentration and block length. On- and off-line combinations of size exclusion chromatography and infrared spectroscopy were used to analyze chemical composition (CC) of the unfractionated samples across the molecular weight distribution enabling comparison with the fractions. A polycarbonate-siloxane copolymer containing 10 wt% of very short siloxane blocks (dp = 2)…

Characterization of Polyorganosiloxane Nanoparticles in Aqueous Dispersion by Asymmetrical Flow Field-Flow Fractionation

2001

The advantages of asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF-FFF) for the characterization of aqueous dispersions of spherical polyorganosiloxane nanoparticles are discussed. With AF-FFF it was possible to obtain information about the synthesis, which is based on the hydrolysis and condensation of alkylalkoxysilanes in aqueous dispersion, and the average size of the spherical nanoparticles in the complex mixture in the presence of excess surfactant. The results are compared to measurements performed with dynamic light scattering (DLS). The size of the nanoparticles increases as a function of the amount of added monomer. Particles with radii between 2 and 50 nm are observed. If only the …

Branched versus linear oligo(dimethylsiloxane): Differences in their thermodynamic interaction with solvents

2010

The thermodynamic behavior of linear and of branched oligo(dimethylsiloxane) (O-DMS) solutions was studied by means of vapor pressure measurements and vapor pressure osmometry at different temperatures for the thermodynamically favorable solvent THF. The branched material required for that purpose was synthesized and afterwards fractionated by means of the single solvent acetone to eliminate components of low degrees of branching. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameters, χ, for the systems THF/O-DMS as a function of composition pass a minimum at all temperatures (25, 40, and 60 °C) in the case of the branched material. For the unbranched oligomer such a minimum is only observed at 60 °C. A…
