Convergent and discriminative validity of the Frail-VIG index with the EQ-5D-3L in people cared for in primary health care
2021
Abstract Background The Frail-VIG frailty index has been developed recently. It is an instrument with a multidimensional approach and a pragmatic purpose that allows rapid and efficient assessment of the degree of frailty in the context of clinical practice. Our aim was to investigate the convergent and discriminative validity of the Frail-VIG frailty index with regard to EQ-5D-3L value. Methods We carried out a cross-sectional study in two Primary Health Care (PHC) centres of the Catalan Institute of Health (Institut Català de la Salut), Barcelona (Spain) from February 2017 to January 2019. Participants in the study were all people included under a home care programme during the study peri…
Epidemiology of Fragility Fractures and Social Impact
2020
AbstractHip fracture is an important and debilitating condition in older people, especially in women. The epidemiological data vary between countries, but it is globally estimated that hip fractures currently affect around 18% of women and 6% of men. Although the age-standardised incidence is gradually decreasing in many countries, this is far outweighed by the ageing of the population. Thus, the global number of hip fractures is expected to increase. The direct costs associated with this condition are enormous since it requires a long period of hospitalisation and subsequent rehabilitation. Furthermore, hip fracture is associated with the development of other negative consequences, such as…
Fatigue crack propagation from a cold-worked hole
2007
Abstract The cold expansion process is widely used to enhance the fatigue life of structures with fastener holes. Various studies assert that the cold expansion improves the fatigue strength of fastener holes; however, the improvement of fatigue life is difficult to quantify. Therefore, the influence on fatigue life of cold-worked process was studied by numerical and experimental tests. Then, a parametric study on material hardening behavior and Bauschinger’s parameter was performed for several loading conditions in order to determine their effect on crack growth propagation. The results of the numerical tests have exhibited a good prediction of the fatigue life of the component.
The efficiency of lead thyroid shield in trauma surgery
1997
158 Timing of Fascia Iliaca Compartment Block (FICB) for Neck of Femur (NOF) fracture in the Accident and Emergency Department (AED) and the operatin…
2021
Background and Aims FICB is recommended for NOF fracture in the AED to improve analgesia1 and as an adjuvant to anaesthesia during surgery2. Surgical repair of the fracture should be performed on the day of, or the day after, admission3. We evaluated the provision of FICB in AED and its potential to cause local anaesthetic (LA) toxicity when followed by a further block at time of surgery. Methods All patients admitted to our institution with NOF fracture during October 2019 were retrospectively screened for FICBs. We recorded the time of: admission, FICB in AED, surgery, FICB in theatre and LA dose. Data was cross-referenced and validated against National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) tables…
Post-rehabilitation home exercises after stroke and hip fracture: results of a pilot study in Palermo
2010
Although most patients having sustained a stroke or hip fracture (PSHF) attend a period of therapy and rehabilitation program, it usually only last a few months and they may not continue an exercise program when the rehabilitation treatment has ended. Many Authors suggests that PSHF can improve or maintain the rehabilitation outcomes through an exercise program. At the geriatric assessment and integrated home-care Unit, Health-District 10, ASP6-Palermo, we enrolled 51 PSHF who were able to collaborate and follow the home exercise program and compared them with 50 PSHF who had been discharged from the same Unit in the period preceding the beginning of the study. The home exercise program was…
The Halfmoon Sign
1982
SUMMARY The halfmoon-sign is described. It consists of typically shaped fragments seen on the lateral view of the elbow in the area around the fossa radialis. With rare exceptions, the halfmoon sign is indicative of fracture of the distal humerus in the coronal plane, most commonly involving the capitulum humeri.
A simple experiment to characterize material formability in tube hydroforming
2001
Abstract In tube hydroforming processes an internal fluid pressure is utilized to form the material on a properly shaped die; during the process the material axial movement is favoured by the axial feeding of an active punch. In the paper a simple experiment is presented aimed to investigate the influence of the main process variables on material formability. This equipment has enabled an extensive experimental investigation; furthermore a numerical analysis based on the finite element technique has been performed and a ductile fracture criterion has been implemented to predict the insurgence of bursting defects.
Monitoring of fracture calluses with color Doppler sonography.
1999
Purpose Fracture callus formation is closely associated with vascular invasion, and the use of color Doppler sonography has been suggested as a means to monitor, earlier than gray-scale sonography, the first stages of the healing process. We report the findings in a series of patients with tibial fractures in whom both gray-scale sonography and color Doppler imaging were employed to monitor new bone formation at the fracture site. Methods Twenty patients with tibial fractures treated with external fixator frames were examined sonographically about 10 days after surgery and then about every 25 days until radiographic demonstration of consolidation. Results Eighteen of 20 patients had a well-…
