Randomized, Double-Blind, Clinically Controlled Trial of Intranasal Calcitonin Treatment in Patients with Hip Fracture

The objective of this study was to evaluate the short-term outcome of intranasal calcitonin treatment of elderly hip fracture patients on pain, bone loss, functional recovery, and length of hospital stay. In addition, we wanted to compare the effect of calcitonin with placebo on fusion of hip fractures treated with internal fixation using a screw or a nail. In a randomized, double-blind, clinically controlled trial, 260 independently living patients (aged 65 years or older) with acute hip fracture were randomly assigned to intranasal calcitonin 200 IU daily for 3 months or matching placebo nasal spray. A fatal iatrogenic right vertebral injury after transoral odontoidectomy and posterior cervical stabilization for a type II odontoid fracture.

Abstract The authors present a singular case of an iatrogenic right vertebral artery injury, involving a 67 year-old man, who reported a type II odontoid fracture (Anderson and D'Alonzo Classification) and posterior atlantoaxial dislocation following a road traffic accident. A small injury involving the right vertebral artery occurred as a consequence of transoral odontoidectomy and posterior cervical stabilization. It was caused by bone spicules of spinal origin and their presence was confirmed by the histological section of the right vertebral artery at the level of C1–C2. While some morbidities associated with the excessive use of alcohol are related to the total amount of alcohol consumed--cirrhosis being an example--other pathologies, such as trauma and those of psycho-social origin, are mainly related to the frequency of acute alcoholic intoxication rather than to the total amount consumed. The balance between these two types of alcohol-associated morbidities can provide an indication of the relative frequency of intoxication, and thus of the pattern of alcohol abuse in a population. Implant fracture is an infrequent cause of implant failure. The present study evaluates 21 fractured implants, with an analysis of patient age and sex, the type, length and diameter of the implant, positioning in the dental arch, the type of prosthetic rehabilitation involved, the number of abutments and pontics, the presence or absence of distal extensions or cantilevers, and loading time to fracture.
