Degrees of freedom effect on fragmentation in tandem mass spectrometry of singly charged supramolecular aggregates of sodium sulfonates
2012
The characteristic collision energy (CCE) to obtain 50% fragmentation of positively and negatively single charged noncovalent clusters has been measured. CCE was found to increase linearly with the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the precursor ion, analogously to that observed for synthetic polymers. This suggests that fragmentation behavior (e.g. energy randomization) in covalent molecules and clusters are similar. Analysis of the slope of CCE with molecular size (DoF) indicates that activation energy of fragmentation of these clusters (loss of a monomer unit) is similar to that of the lowest energy fragmentation of protonated leucine-enkephalin. Positively and negatively charged aggregates be…
A molecular dynamics study of structure, stability and fragmentation patterns of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate positively charged aggregates…
2011
Positively charged supramolecular aggregates formed in vacuo by n AOTNa (sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate) molecules and n(c) additional sodium ions, i.e. [AOT(n)Na(n+n(c))](n(c)), have been investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for n = 1-20 and n(c) = 0-5. Statistical analysis of physical quantities like gyration radii, atomic B-factors and moment of inertia tensors provides detailed information on their structural and dynamical properties. Even for n(c) = 5, all stable aggregates show a reverse micelle-like structure with an internal solid-like core including sodium counterions and surfactant polar heads surrounded by an external layer consisting of the surfactant alky…
What Limits the Molecular Weight and Controlled Synthesis of Poly(3-alkyltellurophene)s?
2016
Polytellurophenes are an emerging class of conjugated polymers; however, their controlled polymerization leading to high molecular weight materials has been a major challenge. Here we present a systematic investigation of the synthesis of poly(3-alkyltellurophene)s using the catalyst transfer polycondensation methodology. Learning that previous syntheses were limited by both polymerization reaction kinetics and polymer solubility, we design new tellurophene monomers to overcome these limitations. Controlled polymerization behavior up to Mn = 25 kDa, chain extension, block copolymerization, external initiation, and well-defined end groups are demonstrated for poly(3-alkyltellurophene)s with …
Branched and Functionalized Polybutadienes by a Facile Two-Step Synthesis
2008
Anionic polymerization was used to prepare silane-endfunctionalized polybutadiene macromonomers with different molecular weights ranging from 9 000 to 34000 g .mol- 1 . These were polymerized by a hydrosilylation reaction in bulk to obtain branched polymers, using Karstedt's catalyst. Surprisingly, the addition of monofunctional silanes during the polymerization showed only a minimal effect concerning the degree of polymerization. Furthermore, it was possible to introduce a variety of functional silanes without increasing the overall number of reaction steps by a convenient AB 2 + A type "pseudocopolymerization" method. All branched polymers were analyzed by SEC, SEC-MALLS, SEC-viscosimetry…
Effect of sperm concentration and storage temperature on goat spermatozoa during liquid storage
2020
The use of cooled semen is relatively common in goats. There are a number of advantages of cooled semen doses, including easier handling of artificial insemination (AI) doses, transport, more AI doses per ejaculate, and higher fertility rates in comparison with frozen AI doses. However, cooled semen has a short shelf life. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of temperature and sperm concentration on the in vitro sperm quality during liquid storage for 48 h, including sperm motility and kinetics, response to oxidation, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and DNA fragmentation in goats. Three experiments were performed. In the first, the effects of liquid preservation of …

Norovirus in captive lion cub (Panthera leo)
2007
African lions (Panthera leo) are susceptible to viral diseases of domestic carnivores, including feline calici-virus infection. We report the identification of a novel enteric calicivirus, genetically related to human noroviruses of genogroup IV, in a lion cub that died of severe hemorrhagic enteritis.

Cyclodextrins in polymer synthesis: free radical polymerization of cyclodextrin host-guest complexes of methyl methacrylate or styrene from homogenou…
2000
The polymerization of methylated β-cyclodextrin (m-β-CD) 1 : 1 host-guest compounds of methyl methacrylate (MMA) (1) or styrene (2) is described. The polymerization of complexes 1 a and 2 a was carried out in water with potassium peroxodisulfate (K2S2O8)/sodium hydrogensulfite (NaHSO3) as radical redox initiator at 60°C. Unthreading of m-β-CD during the polymerization led to water-insoluble poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) (3) and polystyrene (4). By comparison, analogously prepared polymers from uncomplexed monomers 1 and 2 in ethanol as organic solvent with 2,2′-azoisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as radical initiator showed significantly lower molecular weights and were obtained in lower yields i…
