Analysis of the authors’ rights collection frontier using PCA-MDEA: an application to the Valencia region

2002

The aim of this paper is to estimate the authors’ rights collection frontier within the collection zones into which the Valencia Region (Spain) has been divided. To be more exact, a nonparametric frontier technique (Modified Data Envelopment Analysis, MDEA) and the Principal Components Analysis (PCA) are jointly employed to map out an initial approach to the potential authors’ rights collection within this region (as divided into collection zones). The analysis has been carried out both jointly and by majority sectors (performing, musical, and audio-visual arts). Publicaciones Econcult: Área de Investigación en Economía de la Cultura y Turismo. Il disegno campionario e il piano di rilevazione nell’indagine sui turisti incoming in partenza dalla Sicilia e dalla Sardegna: il campionamento spaz…

2011

This paper aims to describe the sample design and the survey plan used in the survey on incoming tourism in Sicily and Sardinia. The specific goals of the survey are related: a) to the measurement and the analysis of un-observed tourism; b) to the evaluation of tourist mobility within the two Islands; c) to the analysis of some key-factors related to the holyday experience of tourists. It is well known that regional tourists are very difficult-to-reach populations and the problems in sampling human mobile populations derive from the absence of a list of units component units (frame). Despite these issues are well-known in literature under the broader categories of hard to reach, or hidden, …

N-benzoylindole-2,3-quinodimethane: Diels-Alder reactivity and synthetic applications for [b]annellated indoles

1991

Abstract The Diels-Alder reactivity of in situ generated N -benzoylindole-2,3-quinodimethane has been expanded considerably to include reactions with carbon- and hetero-dienophiles which furnish a variety of [ b ]annellated indoles as well as functionalized and annellated carbazoles. The frontier molecular orbital theory was found to be a useful model for the prediction of the experimental results under consideration of reactivity aspects.

Measuring water-use in response to climate change: an analysis of the efficiency of Italian crop production system

2017

Official meteo-climatic statistics show the variability of weather conditions. Their effects on socioeconomic and natural environments should be analyzed in multi-dimensional studies. Among sectors, agriculture is expected to be the most sensitive as well as water resources availability. The aim of our analysis is to measure the performance of Italian regions in crop production by estimating both production technology - including a measure of irrigation water used as input - output elasticities and returns to scale and productive efficiency or technical efficiency where rainfalls and temperatures are proxies of CC conditions in the period 2000-2010 at Italian regional level, using the stoch…

Regulation and efficiency: the case of European railways

2001

Abstract During the long period of regulation of the railway system in Europe (1950s–1990s) the companies notably improved their levels of productivity. However, parallel to this, the state of their financial accounts also significantly worsened. In order to explain this fact we have estimated both cost and revenue frontier functions, calculating the losses associated with both cost and revenue inefficiencies as well as inefficiencies on the cost side. The results obtained show the existence of significant potential losses of revenue, which can be explained above all by the strong policy of regulation and intervention reigning in this period. A better commercial policy and a supply adapted …

Technical efficiency and the vertical boundaries of the firm: theory and evidence

2013

This article provides a theoretical and empirical analysis of the relationship between firms’ technical efficiency and the vertical organization of production. Technical inefficiency is explicitly introduced as the source of firms’ heterogeneity in a Bertrand–Nash model of industry competition: the main prediction of the model is that the most efficient firms choose vertical integrated structures and the less-efficient ones choose disintegrated structures. The empirical part of the article rests on a stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) in a sample of about 400 Italian machine tool (MT) builders, and the result supports the prediction of the theoretical model.

Flexible Estimation of Heteroskedastic Stochastic Frontier Models via Two-step Iterative Nonlinear Least Squares

2019

Despite its importance, the monotonicity condition is typically overlooked in stochastic frontier analysis. This article illustrates a straightforward and useful method for the estimation of semiparametric stochastic frontier models imposing such constraint and incorporating exogenous inefficiency effects exploiting the scaling property. An iterative estimation algorithm based on nonlinear least squares is developed and the behavior of the proposed procedure is investigated through a set of Monte Carlo experiments comparing its finite sample properties with those of available alternatives. The simulation results highlight very good performance of the new algorithm which outperforms the comp…
