Organic residues in lake and drinking water from the lagoa de Juturnaíba (região dos lagos - RJ, Brazil)
1997
Various analytical methods for the determination of organic residues in water were applied to samples from the Lagoa de Juturnaíba in the Região dos Lagos, east of Rio de Janeiro. The concentrations of more than 60 pesticides and of different aminopolycarboxylic acids were determined using GC/MS detection, and a GC/MS screening procedure was applied to detect additional compounds. None of the investigated pesticide residues could be detected in the lake water at detection limits of less than 100 ng/L. EDTA was detected at a concentration level of 2 mg/L in the lake and in drinking water prepared from this lake. Traces of biphenyl were identified by GC/MS in the lake water, the source of whi…
Effect of Fibre-Enriched Orange Juice on Postprandial Glycaemic Response and Satiety in Healthy Individuals: An Acute, Randomised, Placebo-Controlled…
2019
Background: Consumption of fibre-enriched orange juice may be an appropriate way to supplement daily fibre intake and achieve beneficial effects on metabolic health. The present study aimed to assess the short-term effects of fibre-enriched orange juice on postprandial metabolism and satiety in a healthy adult population. Methods: In this double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, crossover study 10 healthy subjects underwent two one-day trials in which they consumed an orange juice beverage containing 1.4 g/100 mL of citrus fibre (29.3% soluble and 41.9% insoluble) or a placebo (regular orange juice without added fibre). Postprandial glucose, insulin, gut hormones (GLP1, GIP and ghrelin…
Chronic consumption of an inositol-enriched carob extract improves postprandial glycaemia and insulin sensitivity in healthy subjects: A randomized c…
2016
Background & aims: Inositols are thought to be mediators of the insulin signalling pathway. We assessed the effects of inositols on glycaemic control in fasting and postprandial states and evaluated lipoprotein profile and LDL particle size in healthy population. Methods: A 12-week double-blind clinical trial was performed with forty healthy subjects administered either an inositol-enriched beverage (IEB) -containing 2.23 g of inositols in 250 ml- or a sucrose-sweetened beverage (SB) twice a day. Anthropometric measurements, fasting glucose levels, insulin and HOMA-IR index, lipoprotein profile and postprandial glucose concentrations (measured using the continuous glucose monitoring system …
Use of a logistic model to assess spoilage by Byssochlamys fulva in clarified apple juice
2010
Abstract The percentage P (%) of spoiled bottles (n = 40) of clarified apple juice due to Byssochlamys fulva, was modeled by using a logistic model: P = P max 1 + exp ( k ( τ − t ) ) where Pmax (%) the maximum percentage of spoiled bottles, k (h− 1) a slope parameter and τ (h) the time for P = Pmax/2. Bottles of pasteurized apple juice were inoculated with B. fulva IOC 4518 ascospores for low and high initial loads, 4.8 ± 2.3 ascospores/100 mL and 19.3 ± 4.6 ascospores/100 mL respectively and incubated at 21 °C and 30 °C. Pmax was not significantly different from 100% except for a low initial load at 21 °C. Model parameters were estimated with a good accuracy, RMSE in the range 3.89–7.50. T…
The flesh ethanolic extract of Hylocereus polyrhizus exerts anti-inflammatory effects and prevents murine colitis
2015
IBD is a chronic disorder of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by mucosal inflammation and epithelial damage. Biologic therapy has significantly improved the course of the disease but there are still a high percentage of patients that do not respond to current therapies. We aim to determine the effects of the flesh ethanolic extract of Hylocereus polyrhizus (EH) in a mice model of colitis induced by TNBS.Balb/c mice received TNBS (175 mg/kg, 100 μl, i.r.) and six and thirty hours later were administered with EH (1 g/kg, i.p.). Mice were weighted daily and after sacrificing (2 and 4 days after TNBS) we analyzed mucosal histology, myeloperoxidase activity (MPO), the expression of pro-i…
The role of native flower visitors in pollinating Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., naturalized in Sicily
2011
Abstract The role of insects in pollination and consequently in fruit set and quality was assessed in two commercial orchards of the cactus pear, Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., in Agrigento Province, Sicily. In 1997, insects visiting flowers were sampled during May–June (the first bloom) and July (the second bloom, induced by the “scozzolatura” practise). More than 50 insect species belonging to 10 orders were collected in May–June, while only five species of Hymenoptera Apoidea were collected in July. The quality of fruits arising from the second bloom showed that Hymenoptera alone were able to guarantee effective pollination. To verify the role of insects in pollination in 1996 (during …
Fluxapyroxad Haptens and Antibodies for Highly Sensitive Immunoanalysis of Food Samples
2017
Fluxapyroxad is a new-generation carboxamide fungicide, with residues increasingly being found in food samples. Immunochemical assays have gained acceptance in food quality control as rapid, cost-effective, sensitive, and selective methods for large sample throughput and in situ applications. In the present study, immunoreagents to fluxapyroxad were obtained for the first time, and competitive immunoassays were developed for the sensitive and specific determination of fluxapyroxad residues in food samples. Two carboxyl-functionalized analogues of fluxapyroxad were prepared, and antibodies with IC50 values in the low nanomolar range were generated from both haptens, though a dissimilar respo…
Plant sterol oxides in functional beverages: Influence of matrix and storage
2014
Three plant sterol (PS)-enriched beverages, milk based fruit juice (MFJPS), fruit juice (FJPS) and milk beverage (MPS), were stored at 4, 24, or 37 °C and analysed at regular time intervals of 2 months until 6 months. PS stability was analysed from the production of phytosterol oxidation products (POPs). The β-sitosterol oxides (7α/7β-hydroxy, β/α-epoxy, triol, and 7-keto) and campesterol oxides (β/α-epoxy, and 7-keto) were detected in all beverages and at all storage times and temperatures. Total POP contents followed the order MPS≫FJPSMFJPS. In general, the beverages showed low PS oxidation levels (0.17%). Predictive models of POP content versus storage time were established. These models…
Influence of fruit canopy position and maturity on yield determinants and chemical composition of virgin olive oil
2019
Background While both maturity and light exposure are important factors determining olive fruit physiology, the relationship between maturity, canopy position and optimal harvesting time has not been well-studied. To understand the interaction of these factors, olive fruits from upper and lower layers of the canopy were harvested from September to January. Maturity, moisture and fat content of the fruit as well as the quality and minor components of the oil extracted were measured. Results Lower light interception at the lower canopy positions resulted in differences in the fruits and oil extracted between canopy layers. Upper layer presented 60% of the overall production; fruit had one uni…
Evaluation of Small Vase and Y-trellis Orchard Systems for Peach and Nectarine Production in Mediterranean Regions
2015
Two peach planting systems, Small Vase (SV) and Y-trellis (Y), were evaluated and compared in the Mediterranean settings of Southern Italy. The two orchards were located next to each other on relatively uniform soil and terrain, and the observations included two peach (âRich Mayâ and âSummer Richâ) and two nectarine (âBig Bangâ and âNectarossâ) cultivars. In the SV system, trees were spaced at 4.5 A 2.5 m (888 trees/ha), whereas in the Y system, trees were spaced at 5.5 A 2 m (909 trees/ha) and no canopy gap was left between rows. Yield per tree; fruit size grade; unit price of sold peaches for each size grade; materials, labor and associated costs for cultural management;…
