Fuzzy subgroup mining for gene associations

2004

When studying the therapeutic efficacy of potential new drugs, it would be much more efficient to use predictors in order to assess their toxicity before going into clinical trials. One promising line of research has focused on the discovery of sets of candidate gene profiles to be used as toxicity indicators in future drug development. In particular genomic microarrays may be used to analyze the causality relationship between the administration of the drugs and the so-called gene expression, a parameter typically used by biologists to measure its influence at gene level. This kind of experiments involves a high throughput analysis of noisy and particularly unreliable data, which makes the …

OFN Capital Budgeting Under Uncertainty and Risk

2017

The aim of this chapter is to propose a new approach to incorporating uncertainty into capital budgeting. The chapter presents methods that can be used by an investor when the decision maker wants to be able to make an investment decision where there are alternative investment projects. This kind of problem is undertaken under the conditions of uncertainty and risk using Ordered Fuzzy Numbers (OFN). The starting point is the concept of Ordered Fuzzy Numbers. The chapter illustrates the implementation of the proposed approach with an example where two alternative investment projects are analyzed. The authors present the capital budgeting problem using a numerical example. The described metho…

Fuzzy gender categories: How emotional expression influences typicality *The authors would like to thank Fieke Harinck for her help in conducting Stu…

2001

Social categories are conceived of as broad classes in which some instances are better exemplars than others, and non-necessary features are assumed to modulate typicality. This research investigated how various emotional expressions impact on gender categorization. Two concurrent measures - response latencies and prototypicality judgments - were collected and compared in three experiments. The results showed that emotional expressions of any kind are highly relevant in modulating females' category membership, while they are of less relevance in making a male more or less prototypical. These findings provide new insights into the relation between gender and emotional expressions.

State-feedback sampled-data control design for nonlinear systems via passive theory

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/230413 Open Access This paper investigates the problem of passive controller design for a class of nonlinear systems under variable sampling. The Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy modeling method is utilized to represent the nonlinear systems. Attention is focused on the design of passive controller for the T-S fuzzy systems via sampled-data control approach. Under the concept of very-strict passivity, a novel time-dependent Lyapunov functional is constructed to develop passive analysis criteria and passive controller synthesis conditions. A new …

Evaluative linguistic expressions vs. fuzzy categories

2015

In this paper, we discuss the distinction between categories characterized by verbal labels taken from a fuzzy rating scale and special class of linguistic expressions, called evaluative. The latter form a general class of expressions that includes gradable and evaluative adjectives and their hedges. First, we will provide a brief linguistic analysis of them. Then we outline basic principles for construction of the mathematical model of semantics of evaluative expressions. In Section 3 we will analyze the concepts of rating scale with verbal labels (fuzzy rating scale), their semantics and demonstrate that the latter cannot be identified with the semantics of evaluative expressions. Finally…

Some new fixed point results in non-Archimedean fuzzy metric spaces

2013

In this paper, we introduce the notions of fuzzy $(\alpha,\beta,\varphi)$-contractive mapping, fuzzy $\alpha$-$\phi$-$\psi$-contractive mapping and fuzzy $\alpha$-$\beta$-contractive mapping and establish some results of fixed point for this class of mappings in the setting of non-Archimedean fuzzy metric spaces. The results presented in this paper generalize and extend some recent results in fuzzy metric spaces. Also, some examples are given to support the usability of our results.

Producer's spatial equilibrium with a fuzzy constraint

1980

The classical theory of the producer’s equilibrium rests on two sets of particularly restrictive hypotheses. First it is implicitely assumed that all inputs and outputs are located in a single place where the producer is also implanted and where the production is carried out. Next it is assumed that the producer follows a precise behaviour pattern, by this we mean that the producer has complete information concerning the conditions of hisproductive activity and he has perfect command over both the set of inputs and the set of outputs; he realises the maximum profit allowed by the technological constraint which limits his possible actions and by the given price system. The aim of this study …

SMART: Unique splitting-while-merging framework for gene clustering

2014

© 2014 Fa et al. This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited. Successful clustering algorithms are highly dependent on parameter settings. The clustering performance degrades significantly unless parameters are properly set, and yet, it is difficult to set these parameters a priori. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a unique splitting-while-merging clustering framework, named "splitting merging awareness tactics" (SMART), which does not require any a priori knowledge of either the number …
