Fuzzy tuning systems: the mathematics of musicians
2005
We present some mathematical properties which determine tuning methods. We introduce the concept of fuzzy tuning systems and we analyze four of the systems coexisting within the current orchestras: Pythagorean, Just Intonation, Holder's and Equal Temperament systems. We show that the theoretical and practical tuning methods are the same. We introduce the idea of compatibility between tuning systems and we give some sufficient conditions to determine an appropriate number of notes into which the octave must be divided.
A very brief history of soft computing: Fuzzy Sets, artificial Neural Networks and Evolutionary Computation
2013
This paper gives a brief presentation of history of Soft Computing considered as a mix of three scientific disciplines that arose in the mid of the 20th century: Fuzzy Sets and Systems, Neural Networks, and Evolutionary Computation. The paper shows the genesis and the historical development of the three disciplines and also their meeting in a coalition in the 1990s.
Development of artificial neural network for condition assessment of bridges based on hybrid decision making method – Feasibility study
2021
Abstract Managing a bridge at an appropriate level of reliability requires knowledge of its technical condition, which is decisive in terms of maintenance and repair activities. This is a multi-criteria decision-making problem which results from the need to allocate limited financial resources to this work. Although many calculation models have been suggested in published sources, none of them has ever met these requirements. The algorithm presented by the authors allows for the assessment of any number of bridges, taking into account the diversity of solutions in terms of materials and structures, and can provide a solution to this problem. This hybrid calculation model, combining the modi…
Efficient pruning of multilayer perceptrons using a fuzzy sigmoid activation function
2006
This Letter presents a simple and powerful pruning method for multilayer feed forward neural networks based on the fuzzy sigmoid activation function presented in [E. Soria, J. Martin, G. Camps, A. Serrano, J. Calpe, L. Gomez, A low-complexity fuzzy activation function for artificial neural networks, IEEE Trans. Neural Networks 14(6) (2003) 1576-1579]. Successful performance is obtained in standard function approximation and channel equalization problems. Pruning allows to reduce network complexity considerably, achieving a similar performance to that obtained by unpruned networks.
The use of artificial intelligence techniques to optimise and control injection moulding processes
1999
In the paper a typical injection moulding process on a single-screw extrusion machine aimed to the production of axisymmetric polypropylene dishes for alimentary use has been investigated. First of all the most important process parameters have been individuated; subsequently a wide testing hyperspace has been investigated, at varying the process parameters in a large range. For each combination both some geometrical characteristics of the obtained component have been measured and the occurrence of defects has been verified. The largest part of the available data have been used to train a neural network aimed to explain the process dynamics. Furthermore an offline control system, based on f…
Global exponential stability of delayed Markovian jump fuzzy cellular neural networks with generally incomplete transition probability
2014
The problem of global exponential stability in mean square of delayed Markovian jump fuzzy cellular neural networks (DMJFCNNs) with generally uncertain transition rates (GUTRs) is investigated in this paper. In this GUTR neural network model, each transition rate can be completely unknown or only its estimate value is known. This new uncertain model is more general than the existing ones. By constructing suitable Lyapunov functionals, several sufficient conditions on the exponential stability in mean square of its equilibrium solution are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our res…

Spatial diversity of chlorine residual in a drinking water distribution system: application of an integrated fuzzy logic technique
2014
A reduction in the concentration of chlorine, which is used as a chemical disinfectant for water in drinking water distribution systems, can be considered to be an index of the progressive deterioration of water quality. In this work, attention is given to the spatial distribution of the residual chlorine in drinking water distribution systems. The criterion for grouping the water-quality parameters normally used is highly subjective and often based on data that are not correctly identified. In this paper, a cluster analysis based on fuzzy logic is applied. The advantage of the proposed procedure is that it allows a user to identify (in an automatic way and without any specific assumption) …
A Comparative Study on Fuzzy-Clustering-Based Lip Region Segmentation Methods
2011
As the first step of many lip-reading or visual speaker authentication systems, lip region segmentation is of vital importance. And fuzzy clustering based methods have been widely used in lip segmentation. In this paper, four fuzzy clustering based lip segmentation methods have been elaborated with their underlying rationale. Experiments have been carried out evaluate their performance comparatively. From the experimental results, SFCM has the best efficiency and FCMST has the best segmentation accuracy.
