The arch is designed and compared by using two different materials, steel and gluelam. This study is carried out on the behalf of Statens vegvesen, Region øst, and serves as the graduate thesis for master degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Agder. The network arch bridge is part of E16 and is located at Oppstadåa. The bridge carries four lanes, which results in a 21 meters wide deck. The span of the bridge is 120 meters. The aim is to design an FRP section that can perform as both structural support and decking on the bridge, in a similar way as often is done with concrete. The advances of using FRP composites is that it is possible to make the bridge sections a lot lighter, and consequently possible to fabricate them in remote locations and transport them to the construction site. The problem with this is that minor and larger damage can be difficult to observe and a challenge to inspect on the spot.
