Participation Costs for Responders Can Reduce Rejection Rates in Ultimatum Bargaining

2008

This paper reports data from an ultimatum mini-game in which responders first had to choose whether or not to participate. Participation was costly, but the participation cost was smaller than the minimum payoff that a responder could guarantee himself in the ultimatum game. Compared to a standard treatment, we find that the rejection rate of unfavorable offers is significantly reduced when participation is costly. A possible explanation based on cognitive dissonance is offered.

Polymer-metal plasmonic waveguide : passive and active components for integrated photonics

2009

Dielectric loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs) enable transmission at a sub-wavelength scale of both electrical and plasmonic (optical waves at the interface between a metal and a dielectric) signals in the same circuitry. Moreover, the use of a polymer as the dielectric load enables the functionalization of DLSPPWs. Therefore, this configuration is of great interest for integrated photonic applications. However, DLSPPWs suffer strong losses due to dissipation into the metal film. We address here the possibility of compensating the losses using a configuration analogous to an optical amplifier. We first set theoretical (effective index model), numerical (differential metho…

L’incriminazione dello smuggling of migrants in Europa: una ricognizione comparatistica

2019

Il lavoro opera una ricognizione comparatistica di varie discipline del migrant smuggling: internazionale (Protocollo ONU), sovranazionale (UE Facilitation package) e nazionali (Italia, Portogallo, Spagna, Germania), a partire dai dati raccolti nel corso della ricerca "The New Era of Smuggling in the Mediterranean Sea" (2017-19), finanziata da PMI

Modeling of Vehicle-to-Vehicle Channels in the Presence of Moving Scatterers

2012

In this paper, we derive a vehicle-to-vehicle~(V2V) channel model assuming a typical propagation scenario in which the local scatterers move with random velocities in random directions. The complex channel gain of the proposed V2V channel model is provided. Subsequently, for different scatterer velocity distributions, the corresponding autocorrelation functions~(ACFs) are derived, illustrated, and compared with the classical ACF derived under the assumption of fixed scatterers. Furthermore, under specific conditions, highly accurate approximations for the ACFs are provided in closed form. Since the proposed V2V channel model covers several communication scenarios as special cases, including…

BEP analysis of M-ary PSK modulation schemes over double Rice fading channels with EGC

2010

In this article, the performance of M-ary phase shift keying (PSK) modulation schemes over mobile-to-mobile (M2M) fading channels with equal gain combining (EGC) in cooperative networks is analyzed. Narrowband M2M fading channels under line-of-sight (LOS) propagation conditions are modeled as double Rice processes. A dual-hop amplify-and-forward relay network, where LOS components can exist in the transmission links between the source mobile station and the destination mobile station via K mobile relays, is studied. Here, the average bit error probability (BEP) is utilized to evaluate the performance of Mary PSK modulation schemes. A simple analytical approximation for the average BEP of M-…

Interfaces as design tools for the InAs/GaSb/InSb short-period superlattice for mid-infrared emission

2011

We use a standard 8 × 8 envelope-function approximation (EFA) formalism taking into account the effect of anisotropic and other interface (IF) interactions to investigate the electronic and optical properties of short-period superlattice laser structures (InAs/GaSb/InSb)×N grown on a GaSb substrate. We find that the band gaps numerically calculated at different temperatures give a good fitting with the experimental data confirming the model used. The calculated modal gain demonstrates that it is possible to achieve lasing operation at room temperature for N  > 12 and for a reasonable total optical loss αt = 25 cm−1. Therefore, the 8 × 8 EFA formalism with IF design serves as a tool to model…

Estimation of the mean crystal size and the moments of the crystal size distribution in batch crystallization processes

2016

International audience; A cascade high gain observer is designed to estimate the first four leading moments of the crystal size distribution (CSD) and the mean crystal size in batch crystallization processes. The proposed observer is based on a well-known transformation of the partial differential equation describing the CSD to a set of ordinary differential equations (the method of moments). Due to numerical difficulties resulting from the important differences in the magnitudes of the moments, a set of new variables is computed to allow a good estimation of the moments and thus the mean crystal size. In this work, only solute concentration and crystallizer temperature are used to estimate…

Identification of a copper chaperone from tomato fruits infected with Botrytis cinerea by differential display

2003

Differential display was used to isolate tomato genes responding to fungal infection. Here we describe the isolation and characterization of a gene that is down-regulated in tomato fruits infected with the phytopathogen Botrytis cinerea. The cDNA identified encodes a protein that shares sequence similarity to the amino terminal region of CCH, a copper chaperone from Arabidopsis thaliana, that participates in intracellular copper homeostasis by delivering Cu to the secretory pathway. The fact that this newly characterized tomato gene, referred to as LeCCH (Lycopersicon esculentum copper chaperone), be differentially expressed after fungal infection, suggests an interesting relationship betwe…

A Research Agenda: The Changing Relationship Between Body Weight and Health in Aging

2008

It is increasingly recognized that changes in weight and body composition with age are strongly connected with health status and physical function. Aging is typically associated with reductions in total and lean mass, so that in the last few years of life, older people frequently report having lost weight and strength (1–3). We know only a few important facts about this process. On average, muscle mass declines with age, and even in older persons with stable weight, muscle is replaced by fat over time (4,5). Increasing fatty infiltration of muscle tissue is associated with decreasing muscle strength (6). The general pattern of weight change over the lifetime is that weight increases through…
