Effects of low-gamma tACS on primary motor cortex in implicit motor learning

2019

Abstract In the primary motor cortex (M1), rhythmic activity in the gamma frequency band has been found during movement planning, onset and execution. Although the role of high-gamma oscillatory activity in M1 is well established, the contribution of low-gamma activity is still unexplored. In this study, transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) was used with the aim to specifically modulate low-gamma frequency band in M1, during an implicit motor learning task. A 40 Hz-tACS was applied over the left M1 while participants performed a serial reaction time task (SRTT) using their right hand. The task required the repetitive execution of sequential movements in response to sequences …

Editorial: Understanding Gamma Delta T Cell Multifunctionality - Towards Immunotherapeutic Applications.

2020

Introduction: gd T cells have been characterized by the expression of a gd T cell receptor (TCR).When the gd TCR and the corresponding ab TCR were first discovered it was assumed that the corresponding cell types were likely to be functionally very similar. However, some 30 years later, we have realized that they are not. Unlike ab T cells, gd T cells (i) sense target antigens independent of MHC molecules; (ii) display NK-cell like innate reactivities, including killing of infected cells as well as microbes; (iii) are able to take up large particulates, including bacteria, and (iv) can act as professional antigen presenting cells. The “stress sensing” abilities of gd T cells have led to a g…

Mitochondrial interference by anti-HIV drugs: mechanisms beyond Pol-γ inhibition.

2011

The combined pharmacological approach to the treatment of HIV infection, known as highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), has dramatically reduced AIDS-related morbidity and mortality. However, its use has been associated with serious adverse reactions, of which those resulting from mitochondrial dysfunction are particularly widespread. Nucleos(t)ide-reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) have long been considered the main source of HAART-related mitochondrial toxicity due to their ability to inhibit Pol-γ, the DNA polymerase responsible for the synthesis of mitochondrial DNA. Nevertheless, accumulating evidence points to a more complex relationship between these organelles and NRTI…

Polarization phenomena in Al/p-CdTe/Pt X-ray detectors

2013

Over the last decades, CdTe detectors are widely used for the development of room temperature X-ray and gamma ray spectrometers. Typically, high resolution CdTe detectors are fabricated with blocking contacts (indium, aluminum) ensuring low leakage currents and high electric field for optimum charge collection. As well known, time instability under bias voltage (termed as polarization) is the major drawback of CdTe diode detectors. Polarization phenomena cause a progressive degradation of the spectroscopic performance with time, due to hole trapping and detrapping from deep acceptors levels. In this work, we studied the polarization phenomenon on new Al/p-CdTe/Pt detectors, manufactured by …

A Very Large Area Telescope for γ-Ray Astronomy Above 100 MeV Employing Limited Streamer Tubes

1994

A new detector for γ-ray astronomy above 100 MeV is described in which the electron-positron pairs are tracked by means of a set of plane arrays of Limited Streamer Tubes. This technique allows to build up very large area experiments which are specifically useful to study variable or transient sources.

Genetic risk profiles for Alzheimer's disease: Integration of APOE genotype and variants that up-regulate inflammation

2007

BACKGROUND: A number of studies associate Alzheimer's disease with APOE polymorphism and alleles which favor the increased expression of immunological mediators such as cytokines or acute phase proteins. We integrated this information to better define risk and determine the relative importance of APOE and immunological mediators. METHODS: We investigated functional gene variants for APOE, IL-10 (3 loci), ACT (2 loci), HMGCR, IL-1alpha, IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, and IL-6 found for 260 AD patients and 190 controls enrolled in Northern Italy. A fuzzy latent classification approach, namely grade-of-membership analysis (GoM), was taken to identify extreme pure type risk sets, or profiles. …

Evaluation of the Spectroscopic Performance of 3D CZT Drift Strip Detectors

2021

CdTe/CZT is an attractive and consolidated material with which to realize detectors with good efficiency and energy resolution, operating at room temperature and suitable for a large variety of applications such as medical imaging, nuclear security, and astrophysics. Right in this last field several spectro-imagers based on these CdTe/CZT detectors were mounted onboard space missions such as INTEGRAL, Swift, and NuSTAR for hard X and gamma-ray astrophysics. Much effort has been expended in the development of CZT spectroscopic imagers for obtaining sub-millimeter spatial resolution in three dimensions (3D) and high energy resolution up to 1 MeV. The motivations are mainly related to the poss…
