Free radical biology of the cardiovascular system

2012

Most cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), as well as age-related cardiovascular alterations, are accompanied by increases in oxidative stress, usually due to increased generation and/or decreased metabolism of ROS (reactive oxygen species; for example superoxide radicals) and RNS (reactive nitrogen species; for example peroxynitrite). The superoxide anion is generated by several enzymatic reactions, including a variety of NADPH oxidases and uncoupled eNOS (endothelial NO synthase). To relieve the burden caused by this generation of free radicals, which also occurs as part of normal physiological processes, such as mitochondrial respiratory chain activity, mammalian systems have developed endogen…

Antioxidant and glutathione-related enzymatic activities in rat sciatic nerve

1990

Abstract The present work tries to establish the antioxidant capacity of the peripheral nervous tissue of the rat, in terms of the enzymatic activities present in this tissue that either prevent the formation of activated species as the semiquinone radical (DT-diaphorase), protect against activated oxygen species (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase), conjugate natural toxic products or xenobiotics (glutathione S-transferases, especially the activity conjugating 4-hydroxy-nonenal), or complete the glutathione system metabolism (glutathione disulfide reductase, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase). All the activities studied are lower in this tissue than they are in liver, except for γ-glutam…

INFγ stimulates arginine transport through system y+L in human monocytes

2004

Freshly isolated human monocytes transport L-arginine mostly through a sodium independent, NEM insensitive pathway inhibited by L-leucine in the presence, but not in the absence of sodium. Interferon-gamma (IFNgamma) stimulates this pathway, identifiable with system y+L, and markedly enhances the expression of SLC7A7, the gene that encodes for system y+L subunit y+LAT1, but not of SLC7A6, that codes for the alternative subunit y+LAT2. System y+ plays a minor role in arginine uptake by monocytes and the expression of system y+-related genes, SLC7A1 and SLC7A2, is not changed by IFNgamma. These results demonstrate that system y+L is sensitive to IFNgamma.

Access to Gamma-ray Spectroscopy of Neutron-Rich sdfp Shell Nuclei

2000

γ-rays in neutron-rich sdfp shell nuclei, produced in deep-inelastic processes during collisions of 37Cl and 40Ar ions on 208Pb and of 48Ca ions on 48Ca, have been studied using large Ge multidetector arrays. Candidates for new yrast states in heavy argon and sulfur isotopes have been identified.

Educazione e recalcitranza.

Unit Interval Time and Magnitude Monitoring Using Beta and Unit Gamma Distributions

2022

Quick detection of an assignable cause is necessary for process accuracy with respect to the specifications. The aim of this study is to monitor the time and magnitude processes based on unit-interval data. To this end, maximum exponentially weighted moving average (Max-EWMA) control chart for simultaneous monitoring time and magnitude of an event is proposed. To be precise, beta and unit gamma distributions are considered to develop the Max-EWMA chart. The chart’s performance is accessed using average run length (ARL), the standard deviation of run length (SDRL), and different quantiles of the run length distribution through extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Besides a comprehensive simula…

RTS2 - the Remote Telescope System

2010

RTS2 is an open source observatory manager. It was written from scratch in the C++ language, with portability and modularity in mind. Its driving requirements originated from quick follow-ups of Gamma Ray Bursts. After some years of development it is now used to carry tasks it was originally not intended to carry. This article presents the current development status of the RTS2 code. It focuses on describing strategies which worked as well as things which failed to deliver expected results. Beta Decay Studies of Neutron Rich Nuclei Using Total Absorption Gamma-ray Spectroscopy and Delayed Neutron Measurements

2010

International audience; A complete characterisation of the β-decay of neutron-rich nuclei can be obtained from the measurement of β-delayed gamma rays and, whenever the process is energetically possible, β-delayed neutrons. The accurate determination of the β-intensity distribution and the β-delayed neutron emission probability is of great relevance in the fields of reactor technology and nuclear astrophysics. A programme for combined measurements using the total absorption gamma-ray spectroscopy technique and both neutron counters and neutron time-of-flight spectrometers is presented.

Hints of an axion-like particle mixing in the GeV gamma-ray blazar data?

2013

Axion-Like Particles (ALPs), if exist in nature, are expected to mix with photons in the presence of an external magnetic field. The energy range of photons which undergo strong mixing with ALPs depends on the ALP mass, on its coupling with photons as well as on the external magnetic field and particle density configurations. Recent observations of blazars by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope in the 0.1-300 GeV energy range show a break in their spectra in the 1-10 GeV range. We have modeled this spectral feature for the flat-spectrum radio quasar 3C454.3 during its November 2010 outburst, assuming that a significant fraction of the gamma rays convert to ALPs in the large scale jet of thi…
