Different strategies in optical recognition of polychromatic images.

We treat two different problems in the recognition of polychromatic images: (1) recognition of an object with a given shape and color combination; (2) recognition of an object regardless of its color combination. To solve each problem we propose different strategies. The number of filters and the objects to which the filters are matched vary with the strategy. Phase-only filters have been used to achieve recognition of both problems. Computer results are given for different targets and scenes to show the behavior of the proposed strategies.

Programmable opticaldigital processor for rank order and morphological filtering

A flexible hybrid opto-electronic processor for rank-order and morphological filtering is presented. The system is based on the shadow-casting convolver architecture, and the threshold decomposition concept. It provides the possibility of programming the input image and structuring element at video rate. The possibilities of the processor are experimentally demonstrated.

Optimal design of incoherent tunable-frequency structured illumination microscope scheme

Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) improves resolution and optical sectioning capability compared to conventional widefield techniques. The main idea of this method is the illumination of the sample with a structured pattern of fixed spatial modulation frequency. Previously, a Fresnel biprism has been implemented in a structured illumination (SI) device providing tunable-frequency sinusoidal patterns. However, the use of this SI system introduces a tradeoff between the visibility and field of view of the illumination fringes. In this contribution, we analyze theoretically this tradeoff and propose the optimal design for the Fresnel biprism-based SIM system.

Combining Mendonça-Cipolla self-calibration and scene constraints

International audience; In this paper, we propose a method that combines plane parallelism and the Mendonça/Cipolla self-calibration constraints. In our method each pair of images is treated independently and can therefore use a different pair of parallel planes not necessarily visible in the other views. While, for each pair of images, constraints on the singular values of the essential matrix provide two algebraic constraints on the intrinsic parameters, those we derive from plane parallelism have the advantage of providing two additional ones making the calibration of a no-skew camera possible from two images only.

This work introduces a method to estimate reflectance, shading, and specularity from a single image. Reflectance, shading, and specularity are intrinsic images derived from the dichromatic model. Estimation of these intrinsic images has many applications in computer vision such as shape recovery, specularity removal, segmentation, or classification. The proposed method allows for recovering the dichromatic model parameters thanks to two independent quadratic programming steps. Emergency Analysis: Multitask Learning with Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Fire Emergency Scene Parsing

In this paper, we introduce a novel application of using scene semantic image segmentation for fire emergency situation analysis. To analyse a fire emergency scene, we propose to use deep convolutional image segmentation networks to identify and classify objects in a scene based on their build material and their vulnerability to catch fire. We introduce our own fire emergency scene segmentation dataset for this purpose. It consists of real world images with objects annotated on the basis of their build material. Measurement of the Charged-Pion Polarizability

The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated pion Compton scattering, $\pi^-\gamma\rightarrow \pi^-\gamma$, at centre-of-mass energy below 3.5 pion masses. The process is embedded in the reaction $\pi^-\mathrm{Ni}\rightarrow\pi^-\gamma\;\mathrm{Ni}$, which is initiated by 190\,GeV pions impinging on a nickel target. The exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, $Q^2<0.0015$\,(GeV/$c$)$^2$. From a sample of 63\,000 events the pion electric polarisability is determined to be $\alpha_\pi\ =\ (\,2.0\ \pm\ 0.6_{\mbox{\scriptsize stat}}\ \pm\ 0.7_{\mbox{\scriptsize syst}}\,) \times 10^{-4}\,\mbox{fm}^3$ under the …

The paper aims at discussing the accuracy of perspective restitution from view camera photos; view cameras are non-standard cameras frequently used in the past century for on field shooting of buildings and urban sites; this is why the reconstruction of lost buildings often deals with photos taken with a view camera.
