1998
Abstract Several orders of stacked genetic sequences in the Westphalian C of the Jerada Basin are defined from detailed sedimentological data. Eight coal seams were formed in this paralic basin as distal facies passed laterally into proximal facies in retrogradational stages. These stages are related to base level rises that curtailed detrital influx and induced the development of swamps and the preservation of organic matter below anoxic water levels. The base level variations are related to active faulting along the basin margins and to sea level changes in the Palaeo-Tethys.
Organics versus clastics: conditions necessary for peat (coal) development
1990
Abstract The absence or lack of detrital influx into ancient peat-forming swamps is critical to the formation of low-ash coal. Modern and ancient coal-forming swamps of continental basins show a separation of peat and clastic sediments which is partially fault controlled. In the African rift valleys as well as in the Stephanian intermontane coal basins of France, thick peat free from clastic input may be the result of tectonic activity. In the paralic basins of Morocco (Westphalian B) and Nigeria (Late Cretaceous) coal occur landward of the shoreline turnaround and are related to a relative high stand of the sea, which curtailed detrital influx into the basins. Thus, peat formation occurred…
2019
This article deals with interactions between citizenship and political ecology by examining the ‘pulp mills conflict’ in Gualeguaychú, Argentina. The conflict burst in 2003 when the Uruguayan authorities announced the construction of a cellulose plant on the shore of the Uruguay River. The citizens of Gualeguaychú, a city right across the border, initiated a movement of protest that soon transcended the local dimension. I argue that this protest was a battle over sovereignty and an environmental conflict between different conceptions of development and diverse views of the use of a common resource, the river. The notion of ecological citizenship formed in this process is assessed by examini…
Who speaks? : renegotiating sovereign and metaphysical discourses in politics and law.
2016
The article deals with the theme of the subject in politics and law, which is essentially also the theme of who speaks. A focus on the voice is regarded here as paramount.
2014
ABSTRACT Faced with this new global sovereignty, which is supported by "societies in control" and whose fundamental political scene is the "bios", I am interested in tracking gender within the following parameters: politics/women/war.
The State Power and the Limits of the Principle of Sovereignty: An Historical Approach
2012
This chapter explores the notion of sovereignty and the limits of state power in the framework of criminal justice. It is not an easy enterprise to counter terrorism while respecting the rule of law and guaranteeing the security of citizens to the maximum extent possible without violating their fundamental rights. Theoretically, modern constitutionalism emerged to protect citizens from political abuses of power. In practice, however, fundamental rights are not always fully respected since the state is often tempted to exercise its power beyond legal boundaries. To limit the power of the state means to limit its sovereignty. Otherwise, the abuses of power by the state become inevitable. Surp…
"This is Ghanaian territory!": Land conflicts on a West African border
2003
Most African borders have remained permeable, not least because the colonial and postcolonial states have lacked the necessary resources to enforce them more rigidly, "top-down." In this article, I analyze the ways in which an African border has been dealt with "from below," partly ignored or subverted and partly appropriated. The border between Ghana and Burkina Faso, drawn up in 1898, was soon adopted by the borderlanders as a political resource, capable of shielding them from colonial tax and forced-labor requirements. Local networks of kinship and strategies of land use, on the other hand, usually ignored the border. Although the border cut through many earth-shrine areas, the indigenou…
Eiropas Savienības ārējās robežas Latvijā tiesiskā reglamentācija
2014
Recognizing actions with the associative self-organizing map
2013
When artificial agents interact and cooperate with other agents, either human or artificial, they need to recognize others’ actions and infer their hidden intentions from the sole observation of their surface level movements. Indeed, action and intention understanding in humans is believed to facilitate a number of social interactions and is supported by a complex neural substrate (i.e. the mirror neuron system). Implementation of such mechanisms in artificial agents would pave the route to the development of a vast range of advanced cognitive abilities, such as social interaction, adaptation, and learning by imitation, just to name a few. We present a first step towards a fully-fledged int…
A Case of Cooperative Sound Design
2016
In this design case study, protocol and linkographic analysis are applied to a task of cooperative vocal sketching, proposed in the scope of educational research activities. The understanding of the cognitive behaviors involved in sound creation is aimed at setting the ground for the development of rigorous, designerly evaluation practices tailored to sound design, all the way to the final interactive product. Relevant qualitative and quantitative information about the creative process informs the assessment and possibly improvement of sound design methods.
