Understanding Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia: Experience From a Mediterranean Diagnostic Reference Centre
2020
Background: Due to the lack of a gold standard diagnostic test, reference centres with experienced personnel and costly procedures are needed for primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) diagnostics. Diagnostic flowcharts always start with clinical symptoms. Therefore, the aim of this work is to define differential clinical criteria so that only patients clinically compatible with PCD are referred to reference centres. Materials and methods: 18 variables from 476 Mediterranean patients with clinically suspicious PCD were collected. After analysing cilia function and ultrastructure, 89 individuals were diagnosed with PCD and 387 had a negative diagnosis. Simple logistic regression analysis, consider…

Clinical efficacy of a computerised device (STA™) and a pressure syringe (VarioJect INTRA™) for intraligamentary anaesthesia.
2014
Introduction To evaluate the impact of experience whilst using different devices for intraligamentary anaesthesia, dental students tested clinical anaesthetic efficacy of a mechanical (PDL-S) and a computer-controlled (CCLAD) application system in restorative patients. Material and methods In a prospective study, 41 Patients in need of restorative treatment in lower posterior mandible were randomised into three groups (PDL-S: teeth n = 22; CCLAD: teeth n = 20; inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB): teeth n = 20). Dental last year students conducted anaesthesia and dental treatment. Primary objectives were differences in pain during treatment [numeric rating scale (NRS)] as well as in anaesth…
Nanoparticles coated by chloramphenicol in hydrogels as a useful tool to increase the antibiotic release and antibacterial activity in dermal drug de…
2023
Abstract Background Nanocarriers for antibacterial drugs became hopeful tools against the increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. This work focuses on a comprehensive study of the applicability and therapeutic suitability of dermal carbopol-based hydrogels containing chloramphenicol carried by various nanoparticles (AuNPs and SiNPs). Methods The different forms of carbopol-based drugs for dermal use were obtained. Five different concentrations of chloramphenicol and two types of nanoparticles (silica and gold) in carbopol-based ointments were tested. The influence of different carbopol formulations with nanocarriers on the rheological properties as well as the release profile of a…
Quinol sulphate, a new conjugate of phenol in goldfish.
1983
1. Metabolism of phenol in goldfish yielded the known phenyl conjugates in fish--phenyl sulphate and phenyl glucuronide. Additionally, quinol sulphate, a new conjugate of phenol in fish, was detected.
Methodological Problems in RCTs on IBD
2012
Abstract: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are the gold standard method for developing evidence-based medicine in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Methodological problems in RCTs in IBD concern different aspects such as the definition of the study population due to the extreme variability of patients with IBD, the indices of disease activity, a clearly defined outcome, the environmental risk factors (i.e smoking behaviour) that may influence the randomization, the heterogeneous placebo rate of remission and the different statistical methods used to analyze the results. It is important that trials are designed efficiently, done well and complement clinical practice with a careful subject…
Guanine Assemblies on the Au(111) Surface: A Theoretical Study
2013
It was found previously [Small2009, 5, 1952 and Angew. Chem., Int. Ed.2005, 44, 2270] that guanine molecules when assembled in a vacuum on the Au(111) surface at room temperature form a hydrogen-bonded network consisting of guanine quartets of the same chirality; this was supported by ground-state density functional theory (DFT) gas-phase calculations. In this Article, we re-examine this system and show that many more (almost equally stable) both homo- and heterochiral structures are possible; however, the homochiral structure observed experimentally becomes definitely the most favorable only if the vibrational contribution to the free energy is accounted for. Interaction with the gold surf…
BODIPY - phosphane - gold complexes : towards the elaboration of optical theranostics
2015
This work describes new anticancer agents that could be detected by optical imaging, namely optical theranostics. After a first chapter describing the context of cancer imaging and therapy, a second chapter describes a first series of BODIPY-phosphine-gold theranostics, the synthesis of which has been optimized (less steps, shortening the reaction time, scale up). Their conjugation with biomolecules (glucose, peptide) has been achieved by developing a simple and efficient method that leads to the coupling between the gold atom of the probe and the thiol of the biomolecule (modified or not), leading to a gold sulfur bound. Hence, it makes the biovectorization of the probes possible in order t…
Synthesis of ortho-fonctionnalized arylphosphines and their applications
2020
This thesis reports with the synthesis of ortho-functionnalized phosphines bearing phosphonium and 1,2,3-triazole moieties. The synthesis of phosphines-phosphoniums, using as key-step Phospha-Fries rearrangement and Appel reaction is described. Eight new phosphines- phosphoniums, bearing aryl, alkyl or ferrocenyl fragments on the phosphonium part, have been prepared with overall yields reaching 48%. These phosphines- phosphoniums have been used in the preparation of gold (I) complexes which have been characterized using spectroscopic methods and X ray diffraction. Both gold (I) complexes and phosphines-phosphoniums have been studied in biology and these compounds turned out to be cytotoxic i…
