Vertebrates sense chemical signals through the olfactory and vomeronasal systems. In squamate reptiles, which possess the largest vomeronasal system of all vertebrates, the accessory olfactory bulb projects to the nucleus sphericus, which in turn projects to a portion of the ventral striatum known as olfactostriatum. Characteristically, the olfactostriatum is innervated by neuropeptide Y, tyrosine hydroxylase and serotonin immunoreactive fibers. Convergence of olfactory and vomeronasal projections in the rat basal telencephalon

Olfactory and vomeronasal projections have been traditionally viewed as terminating in contiguous non-overlapping areas of the basal telencephalon. Original reports, however, described areas such as the anterior medial amygdala where both chemosensory afferents appeared to overlap. BACKGROUND A retrograde approach improves the success rate of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) for chronic total occlusions (CTOs). OBJECTIVES The authors describe the European experience with and outcomes of retrograde PCI revascularization for coronary CTOs. METHODS Follow-up data were collected from 1,395 patients with 1,582 CTO lesions enrolled between January 2008 and December 2012 for retrograde CTO PCI at 44 European centers. Major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events were defined as the composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction, stroke, and further revascularization. Bilateral Wallerian degeneration of the medial cerebellar peduncles after ponto-mesencephalic infarction

Three patients with acute large paramedian ponto-mesencephalic infarctions developed a bilateral retrograde degeneration of the medial cerebellar peduncles within 4 months after the insult. In an initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) within the first 2 weeks, the medial cerebellar peduncles showed normal intensities, but a control MRI after 4 months showed bright hyperintensities in the T2-TSE weighted images, and moderately increased signal intensities in echo planar imaging-diffusion weighted imaging were seen, possibly representing bilateral Wallerian degeneration of the cerebellar-pontine fibers.

Direct projections to the rat pineal gland via the stria medullaris thalami. An anterograde tracing study by use of horseradish peroxidase.

The possible presence of a direct nervous projection from the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus to the pineal gland of the rat was investigated by means of the anterograde neuron-tracing method using horseradish peroxidase. The tracer was injected unilaterally into the PVN and the animals were allowed to survive between 12 and 26 h. Numerous peroxidase-positive fibers were observed, ipsilateral to the injection site, in the stria medullaris thalami and could be followed into the medial habenular nucleus and the habenular commissure. Neurochemistry of olivocochlear neurons in the hamster.

The present study was conducted to characterize the superior olivary complex (SOC) of the lower brain stem in the pigmented Djungarian hamster Phodopus sungorus. Using Nissl-stained serial cryostat sections from fresh-frozen brains, we determined the borders of the SOC nuclei. We also identified olivocochlear (OC) neurons by retrograde neuronal tracing upon injection of Fluoro-Gold into the scala tympani. A nitrergic projection from the superior olivary complex to the inferior colliculus of the rat

The present study was conducted to test whether the ascending auditory projection from the superior olivary complex (SOC) of the brainstem to the inferior colliculus (IC) may use nitric oxide (NO) as a neuroactive compound. We identified olivo-collicular projection neurons in subnuclei of the SOC by retrograde neuronal tracing with Fluoro-Gold (FG) injected into the central nucleus of the IC. Materials and methods: A total of 1,172 patients with primary T1 HG/G3 who had NMIBC on re-TURB and who received adjuvant intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin therapy with maintenance were included.
