Characteristics of successful grass-root sport club's governance: a case study Jyväskylän Naisvoimistelijat
2017
Grass-root sport clubs have a substantial role of delivering services for people of all ages, as well as a deep-rooted traditions and history in national competitive sports in Finland. Hence, voluntary boards that govern the clubs have a pivotal role of ensuring the quality of delivering the clubs’ services to consumers, through governance. Therefore, the aim of this qualitative case study is to depict what good governance practices can be found from a successful Finnish grass-root sport club’s board’s practices and operations that make the whole organization successful, as well as to provide suggestions for the particular board how to improve its towards higher quality governance. The main…
Scale-dependent plant diversity in Palaearctic grasslands: a comparative overview
2016
Here we present an extensive overview of plant diversity values in Palaearctic grasslands for seven standard grain sizes from 0.0001 to 100 m². The data originate from 20 studies, including the Field Workshops of the Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (EDGG), ranging geographically from Spain in the west to Siberia in the east, from Sicily in the south to Estonia in the north and from the sea coast up to 3100 m a.s.l. The majority of data is from dry grasslands (Festuco-Brometea, Koelerio-Corynephoretea, Cleistogenetea squarrosae), but there are also some mesic, wet, saline, acidic, alpine and Mediterranean grasslands included. Among others, we compiled data from 1795 1-m², 1109 10-m² and 338 100…
Road verges provide alternative habitats for some, but not all, meadow plants
2021
Questions Agricultural intensification has led to the decline of biodiverse meadows and other semi-natural grasslands. Road verges offer potential alternative habitats for meadow species, but they may not be suitable for all meadow species due to different soil properties, frequent disturbances, pollution or suboptimal management. Are the communities of vascular plants and bryophytes similar or dissimilar to those in mown or grazed meadows? What kind of species are associated with road verges, mown meadows or grazed meadows? How do the habitat types differ in their soil conditions and disturbance intensity? Location The study was conducted on 36 sites in Central Finland. Methods We compared…
Presence of think tanks in the Spanish digital press
2020
The study of think tanks in Spain has been growing in the last few years with an equally increasing number of social and grassroots movements. This article offers content analysis results from a selection of eight Spanish think tanks in the digital press during a seven-year period, adding new conclusions to previous literature for the same period. Not only does this research explore the appearance on the media, but also the type of mentions and authorship of the articles and blogs included in the digital press, contributing to a deeper study of think tanks. The objective of this study is to analyse the limited presence of Spanish think tanks in media outlets and whether their appearance is …
Salt and fat contents in model cheeses influence the release of sodium ions and aroma compounds
2012
The health authorities recommend a reduction in salt (NaCl) and fat contents of foodstuff. But reducing such components without affecting acceptability is a major challenge, particularly because of the interactions with other ingredients, such as aroma compounds. One way could be to increase the mobility of both sodium ions and aroma compounds in food matrix and their release during consumption. This study consists in a multimodal approach to understand the effect of changes in composition of model cheeses on the mobility and release of flavour molecules (NaCl, aroma compounds). Six flavoured model cheeses have been formulated (three fat/protein contents, two NaCl contents). The rheological…
Peroxydation in vivo et in vitro des acides gras polyinsaturés
2007
It is well admitted that polyunsaturated fatty acids are the most sensitive fatty acids to oxidative damage because of their high number of double bonds. This concept could not be confirmed by in vitro, animal, or human studies since unexpected or even contradictory results were obtained. The explanation of that is probably related to the methods evaluating lipid peroxidation whose relevance is not always established, but especially to movements of polyunsaturated fatty acids within lipoproteins that results in their protection. This short review aims to discuss the main results related to this topic.
Pyrgomorphid grasshoppers of the genus Phymateus contain species-specific decapeptides of the AKH/RPCH family regulating lipid-mobilization during fl…
1996
. Using heterologous and conspecific bioassays, two peptides have been isolated from methanolic extracts of corpora cardiaca from the pyrgomorphid grasshopper Phymateus morbillosus L.The structures of both peptides were elucidated by a combination of Edman degradation, after deblocking the N-terminal pyroglutamic acid residue, and mass spectrometric techniques. One peptide is an octapeptide (pGlu-Leu-Asn-Phe-Ser-Thr-Gly-TrpNH2) which also occurs in other insects and is code-named Scg-AKH-II.The second peptide is a novel decapeptide member of the AKH/RPCH family (pGlu-Leu-Asn-Phe-Thr-Pro-Asn-Trp-Gly-SerNH2 code-named here Phm-AKH.It is the first example of a different peptide in the same genu…
A quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics study of the protein-ligand interaction for inhibitors of HIV-1 integrase.
2007
Human immunodeficiency virus type-1 integrase (HIV-1 IN) is an essential enzyme for effective viral replication. Diketo acids such as L-731,988 and S-1360 are potent and selective inhibitors of HIV-1 IN. In this study, we used molecular dynamics simulations, within the hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach, to determine the protein-ligand interaction energy between HIV-1 IN and L-731,988 and 10 of its derivatives and analogues. This hybrid methodology has the advantage that it includes quantum effects such as ligand polarisation upon binding, which can be very important when highly polarisable groups are embedded in anisotropic environments, as for example in metal-c…
