Dynamic and static computer-guided surgery using the double-factor technique for completely edentulous patients: A dental technique.

2021

A novel computer-assisted surgery (CAS) technique that merges dynamic and static CAS approaches to treat completely edentulous patients with dental implants is described. Radiographic and surgical stents are designed with specific fiducial markers that are recognized by the static and dynamic CAS software program. During the surgical procedure, implants are placed following the static surgical guide and the indications from the dynamic navigation system. This technique combines the advantages of static and dynamic CAS approaches to allow accurate and predictable minimally invasive implant placement.

Deep Convolutional Neural Network for HEp-2 fluorescence intensity classification

2019

Indirect ImmunoFluorescence (IIF) assays are recommended as the gold standard method for detection of antinuclear antibodies (ANAs), which are of considerable importance in the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases. Fluorescence intensity analysis is very often complex, and depending on the capabilities of the operator, the association with incorrect classes is statistically easy. In this paper, we present a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) system to classify positive/negative fluorescence intensity of HEp-2 IIF images, which is important for autoimmune diseases diagnosis. The method uses the best known pre-trained CNNs to extract features and a support vector machine (SVM) classifier for the …

An Automatic HEp-2 Specimen Analysis System Based on an Active Contours Model and an SVM Classification

2019

The antinuclear antibody (ANA) test is widely used for screening, diagnosing, and monitoring of autoimmune diseases. The most common methods to determine ANA are indirect immunofluorescence (IIF), performed by human epithelial type 2 (HEp-2) cells, as substrate antigen. The evaluation of ANA consist an analysis of fluorescence intensity and staining patterns. This paper presents a complete and fully automatic system able to characterize IIF images. The fluorescence intensity classification was obtained by performing an image preprocessing phase and implementing a Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier. The cells identification problem has been addressed by developing a flexible segmentati…

What is the Natural Abstraction Level of an Algorithm?

2021

Abstract State Machines work with algorithms on the natural abstraction level. In this paper, we discuss the notion of the natural abstraction level of an algorithm and how ASM manage to capture this abstraction level. We will look into three areas of algorithms: the algorithm execution, the algorithm description, and the algorithm semantics. We conclude that ASM capture the natural abstraction level of the algorithm execution, but not necessarily of the algorithm description. ASM do also capture the natural abstraction level of execution semantics.

Mediated learning materials: visibility checks in telepresence robot mediated classroom interaction

2021

Videoconferencing is increasingly used in education as a way to support distance learning. This article contributes to the emerging interactional literature on video-mediated educational interaction by exploring how a telepresence robot is used to facilitate remote participation in university-level foreign language teaching. A telepresence robot differs from commonly used videoconferencing set-ups in that it allows mobility and remote camera control. A remote student can thus move a classroom-based robot from a distance in order to shift attention between people, objects and environmental structures during classroom activities. Using multimodal conversation analysis, we focus on how partici…

Non-speech voice for sonic interaction: a catalogue

2016

This paper surveys the uses of non-speech voice as an interaction modality within sonic applications. Three main contexts of use have been identified: sound retrieval, sound synthesis and control, and sound design. An overview of different choices and techniques regarding the style of interaction, the selection of vocal features and their mapping to sound features or controls is here displayed. A comprehensive collection of examples instantiates the use of non-speech voice in actual tools for sonic interaction. It is pointed out that while voice-based techniques are already being used proficiently in sound retrieval and sound synthesis, their use in sound design is still at an exploratory p…

Stress Detection from Speech Using Spectral Slope Measurements

2018

Automatic detection of emotional stress is an active research domain, which has recently drawn increasing attention, mainly in the fields of computer science, linguistics, and medicine. In this study, stress is automatically detected by employing speech-derived features. Related studies utilize features such as overall intensity, MFCCs, Teager Energy Operator, and pitch. The present study proposes a novel set of features based on the spectral tilt of the glottal source and of the speech signal itself. The proposed features rely on the Probability Density Function of the estimated spectral slopes, and consist of the three most probable slopes from the glottal source, as well as the correspon…
