Electrical manipulation of magnetism via spin-orbit torques (SOTs) promises efficient spintronic devices. In systems comprising magnetic insulators and heavy metals, SOTs have started to be investigated only recently, especially in systems with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI). Here, we quantitatively study the SOT efficiency and iDMI in a series of gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) / thulium iron garnet (TmIG) / platinum (Pt) heterostructures with varying TmIG and Pt thicknesses. Abstract The charging of small metallic clusters forming discontinuous gold and gallium films, condensed in vacuum onto an insulating substrate (sapphire), was experimentally studied by the method of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) for a photon energy of 5.4 eV. It seems that the charging is due to electron emission as well as to electron transfer from metal islands to the empty electron states in the metal-insulator interface.
Tight-binding study of the optical properties of GaN/AlN polar and nonpolar quantum wells

The electronic structure of wurtzite semiconductor superlattices (SLs) and quantum wells (QWs) is calculated by using the empirical tight-binding method. The basis used consists of four orbitals per atom (sp3 model), and the calculations include the spin-orbit coupling as well as the strain and electric polarization effects. We focus our study on GaN/AlN QWs wells grown both in polar (C) and nonpolar (A) directions. The band structure, wave functions and optical absorption spectrum are obtained and compared for both cases.

Recent reports have claimed a superior performance of HEPES buffer in comparison to alternative buffer systems for 67/68 Ga labeling in aqueous media. In this paper we report spectroscopic (1H and 71 Ga NMR), radiochemical, mass spectrometry and theoretical modeling studies on the Ga3+/HEPES system (HEPES = N-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine-N′-2-ethanesulfonic acid) performed with the aim of elucidating a potential contribution of HEPES in the 68/67 Ga radiolabeling process. Our results demonstrate that HEPES acts as a weakly but competitive chelator of Ga3+ and that this interaction depends on the relative Ga3+: HEPES concentration. Size dependent carrier thermal escape and transfer in bimodally distributed self assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots

We have investigated the temperature dependent recombination dynamics in two bimodally distributed InAs self assembled quantum dots samples. A rate equations model has been implemented to investigate the thermally activated carrier escape mechanism which changes from exciton-like to uncorrelated electron and hole pairs as the quantum dot size varies. For the smaller dots, we find a hot exciton thermal escape process. We evaluated the thermal transfer process between quantum dots by the quantum dot density and carrier escape properties of both samples. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

The residual or doped element concentration [E] in GaAs measured by SSMS is only accurate with respect to the relative sensitivity coefficient RSCE. For a trace element concentration, the RSCE = [E]SSMS/[E]TRUE is set to unity, if no reference material or method is available to approximate the concentration to the true value. For boron a relative sensitivity coefficient of RSCB = 0.94 ± 0.08 was obtained using TI-IDMS as a reference method. RSCN = 1 is used for nitrogen determinations. A boron and nitrogen detection limit of 4.4 × 1013 cm–3 is achieved. An unusual case of chronic diarrhea: a case report

Gastroenteropancreatic-neuroendocrine neoplasms or tumors (GEP-NEN or NETs) are rare tumors arising from the diffuse neuroendocrine system. This clinical case highlights the complexity of the diagnostic process and the difficulties in interpreting the examinations for this type of tumor, showing how the negativity of firstlevel examinations did not prevent from performing further investigations, in the presence of a suggestive clinical presentation. The search of similar cases in the published literature suggests that this represents an unusual presentation of a NET.
