First-principles simulations of H centers in CaF2
2014
Abstract H center, a hole trapped at an interstitial anion site, placed in the bulk and the (1 1 1) surface of calcium fluoride CaF2, has been studied by using density functional theory (DFT) with hybrid exchange potentials, namely DFT-B3PW. The H center orients the (1 1 1) direction for the bulk case and the (1 0 0) direction for the surface case, and the hole is mainly localized on the interstitial fluorine. The surface H center leads to a remarkable XY-translation of the surface atoms. Spin and hyperfine coupling calculations show a considerable interaction between the unpaired spin and the spin of neighboring nuclei, and the surface effect strengthens the spin polarization and hyperfine…
Redox regulation of genome stability by effects on gene expression, epigenetic pathways and DNA damage/repair
2015
Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (e.g. H2O2, nitric oxide) confer redox regulation of essential cellular signaling pathways such as cell differentiation, proliferation, migration and apoptosis. In addition, classical regulation of gene expression or activity, including gene transcription to RNA followed by translation to the protein level, by transcription factors (e.g. NF-κB, HIF-1α) and mRNA binding proteins (e.g. GAPDH, HuR) is subject to redox regulation. This review will give an update of recent discoveries in this field, and specifically highlight the impact of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species on DNA repair systems that contribute to genomic stability. Emphasis will be placed …
Pulsed field gel electrophoresis and genome size estimates
2015
Pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) is a quick and reliable procedure to resolve DNA molecules larger than 30 kb by applying an electric field that periodically changes direction. This technique can be used to estimate genome size of a microorganism, to reveal if a genome is circular or linear, to indicate the presence of megaplasmids, and to show if a strain contains only one or more chromosomes.
GAPP Compiler for Hardware Accelerated Geometric Algebra Computing
2016
Because of the high numeric complexity of Geometric Algebra, its use in engineering applications relies heavily on tools for ecient implementations. In this article, we introduce a new quality of Geometric Algebra Computing solutions based on a new compiler for Geometric Algebra Parallelism Programs (GAPP). These programs are already optimized in a sense that only the really needed computations are left. The GAPP compiler is able to generate two output formats leading to advanced hardware accelerated Geometric Algebra Computing. On one hand, there is the direct generation of HSAIL code, in order to more eciently support the solutions of the broad range of heterogeneous computing architectur…
Go for it! Exercising makes you happy and strong
2020
Despite it is generally recognized the beneficial role of physical activity, large portion of the population is physically inactive. Very alarmingly, the well-known gender gap in physical activity is constantly increasing. Several barriers obstacle women to perform physical activity although exercising would be of paramount importance for their health in particular during pregnancy and menopause. In addition to physical health benefits, physical activity may influence well-being and resilience, greatly impacting on quality of life. Here we explore the relationship between physical activity resilience and well-being in a group of 1107 female residents in the Metropolitan area of Naples.
Investigation of the Na2O/Ag2O ratio on the synthesis conditions and properties of the 80TeO2–10ZnO–[(10−x)Na2O–xAg2O] glasses
2019
International audience; Properties of the tellurite glasses 80TeO2–10ZnO–[(10−x)Na2O–xAg2O] are investigated as a function of the substitution ratio x between Na2O and Ag2O. One observe that the variation of glass transition temperature decreases monotonously with x and that surface crystallization mechanism is favored. The assignment of the Raman bands and their relation with the underlying glass structure is discussed. While both Na2O and Ag2O oxides act as glass network modifiers, their progressive equimolar substitution does not lead to a meaningful evolution in the structure of the TZ[Na10-xAgx] glass. The refractive index and the cut-off wavelength are found to increase with x. The co…
Demystifying the Possibilities of ICT4D in the Mountain Regions of Nepal
2011
Author's version of a chapter in the book: Proceedings of the 44th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/HICSS.2011.142 Despite the substantial investments in ICT4D projects in developing countries, the benefits are yet to be realised by the majority of remote communities. Inaccessibility to ICT has widened educational, healthcare, information, and communication gaps between urban and remote communities. This paper focuses on an interpretive case study in Nepal to widen our understanding of how locally-initiated ICT4D projects may help to narrow these gaps. The study utilises the Assets Pentagon Model to identify …
On a relation between massive Yang-Mills theories and dual string models
1983
The relations between mass terms in Yang-Mills theories, projective representations of the group of gauge transformations, boundary conditions on vector potentials and Schwinger terms in local charge algebra commutation relations are discussed. The commutation relations (with Schwinger terms) are similar to the current algebra commutation relations of the SU(N) extended dual string model.
Correlation at low temperature I. Exponential decay
2003
Abstract The present paper generalizes the analysis in (Ann. H. Poincare 1 (2000) 59, Math. J. (AMS) 8 (1997) 123) of the correlations for a lattice system of real-valued spins at low temperature. The Gibbs measure is assumed to be generated by a fairly general Hamiltonian function with pair interaction. The novelty, as compared to [2,20], is that the single-site (self-) energies of the spins are not required to have only a single local minimum and no other extrema. Our derivation of exponential decay of correlations goes through the spectral analysis of a deformed Laplacian closely related to the Witten Laplacian studied in [2,20]. We prove that this Laplacian has a spectral gap above zero…
