Quaternary transition pathway in sol–gel encapsulated haemoglobin tracked by NIR and UV spectral relaxations

2008

→T structural transition of haemoglobin (hb), the protein responsible for oxygen (o) transport in the red blood cells of vertebrates, is the hall mark example. This transition, which regu lates o2 uptake in the lungs and o2 release in the tissues, is a switch in the quaternary structure of the protein from a low-affinity state (T) to a high-affinity state (R), two well-characterised structures. The struc tural pathway connecting the end states of this transition remains unclear, however, although recently several experimental 1 or

Lactic acid bacteria strains for bioprotection application with cells entrapment in biopolymeric matrices

2013

Among the various methods to control foodborne pathogenic and/or food spoilage microorganisms in food chain, bioprotective lactic acid bacteria (LAB) appear to be promising tools for food biopreservation. This collaborative study, between PAPC (Agrosup Dijon, University of Burgundy) and BioDyMIA (University Lyon1-Lyon Isara) laboratories, concerned the development of sodium alginate/sodium caseinate polymeric matrices intended to entrap LAB cells selected for their anti-Listeria spp. activity. First, 4 LAB strains from 19 LAB strains were selected for their anti-Listeria spp. activity: this screening was performed by the method of agar diffusion against three Listeria spp strains. Then, ant…

“Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie and the Ambiguous Afterlife of the History of the Acadians”

2018

Abstract Longfellow’s Evangeline was hailed as a great and distinctively American work when it appeared in 1847, and the poem’s use of North American history was a key element in its favourable reception. This use of history, however, is ambiguous and complex. The epic continues, first of all, in a long tradition of romanticized retellings of the heart-rending story of the Acadians. But the work also engages in a dual-level dialogue with both the mid-eighteenth-century history of the Acadians, who are pitied, without inciting indignation, and the contemporary history of midnineteenth-century America, whose expansionism it both implicitly celebrates and criticizes.

This article analyzes the presence of book denominated Llibre de la Çuna e Xarain two Valencian libraries. Muslims are governed by all laws and rules of that book during Medieval Age in the Kingdom of V…

Ambivalent Déjà-vu: World War II in the poetry of the Northern Irish Troubles

2021

This article addresses how the poetry of the Northern Irish Troubles enters into a dialogue with the memory of World War II. Poems by Michael Longley, Seamus Heaney, Derek Mahon, and Sinéad Morrissey are analysed, showing how World War II is a controversial source of comparison for these poets. While World War II provides important ways of framing the suffering and claustrophobia of the Northern Irish conflict, evident differences also mean that such comparisons are handled warily and with some irony. The poems are highly self-conscious utterances that seek to unsettle and develop generic strategies in the light of traumatic suffering. This essay draws on Michael Rothberg’s concept of mult…

Subjectivity and Femininity: Reading Antigone

2017

With Antigone's lecture, author answer to the question: what is a subject in the feminine? This question allows us to overcome the classic interpretations of Antigone (Hegel, Lacan) and to elaborate a new reading thanks to Kierkegaard, Butler, Derrida, Marion and to the centrality of the theme of love.

Perceived challenges living and integrating into Finnish society : A study among immigrants in Finland

2022

The number of immigrants living in Finland has significantly increased since the 1990s. It can be challenging to live and integrate into a new society. This study explores the challenges immigrants face living and integrating into Finnish society. Drawing on data collected from 103 immigrants living in Finland, this study shows that the challenges immigrants face integrating into Finnish society can be classified into four main categories: (1) language barrier, (2) discrimination in employment opportunities, (3) racism and inequality, and (4) fewer opportunities of integration. Implications and recommendations are briefly considered.

Deciliation: A stressful event for Paracentrotus lividus embryos.

1998

In this report, by using mono- and two-dimensional electrophoretic analysis, we demonstrate that deciliation on sea urchin embryos induces a stress response. Deciliation indeed causes not only the activation of ciliary subroutine, but also a transient decrease of bulk protein synthesis. This decrease is in agreement with our previous results on heat shock response in sea urchin, although deciliation does not induce the expression of the same main hsp set. We were able to characterize one main deciliation-stress protein of 40 kDa whose expression is transiently induced by deciliation and whose localisation is likely to be nuclear.
