Summary Lungworm infection in seals is an important cause of morbidity and mortality, inducing bronchopneumonia and affecting population dynamics in some areas of the world. We present a series of cases of lungworm infection in grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) associated with novel, significant and unusual pulmonary vascular changes. Grey seals (n = 180) that were stranded, in rehabilitation or in long-term captivity in the UK were subjected to post-mortem examination between 2012 and 2018. The European wildcats (Felis silvestris silvestris) as reservoir hosts of Troglostrongylus brevior (Strongylida: Crenosomatidae) lungworms.

The increasing reports of Troglostrongylus brevior lungworm in domestic cats from Italy and Spain raised questions on its factual distribution and on the role wildcats play as reservoirs of these parasites. Carcasses of 21 wildcats were collected in natural parks of southern Italy (i.e., Catania, Sicily n = 5 and Matera, Basilicata n = 16) and biometrically and genetically identified as Felis silvestris silvestris, but two as hybrids. The deer ked (Lipoptena cervi) is a haematophagous parasitic fly of cervids that spread to Finland in the early 1960's. Presently its northern distribution limit lies at approximately 65°N and it is gradually spreading northwards. In Finland the principal host species has been the moose (Alces alces), but the deer ked is about to establish contact with another potential host, the semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) causing possible threats to reindeer health and management. Immunogenicity of a single dose of reduced-antigen acellular pertussis vaccine in a non-vaccinated adolescent population.

Abstract German adolescents ( n  = 123) without previous pertussis vaccination, no history of pertussis and low IgG-anti-pertussis-toxin (PT) levels received one dose of the Tdap vaccine Boostrix™. Blood samples were taken before, and 5–12 days and 29–49 days after vaccination. IgG- and IgA-anti-PT, IgG- and IgA-anti filamentous hemagglutinin, IgG-anti-pertactin, IgG-anti-tetanus-toxin, and IgG-anti-diphtheria-toxin were measured by ELISA. 88.6% of subjects had an immune response to PT, and all vaccinees had an immune response to at least one pertussis antigen 29–49 days after vaccination. Gnathostomatid nematodes identified morphologically as Spiroxys japonica Morishita, 1926 were collected from the dark-spotted frog Pelophylax nigromaculatus (Hallowell) (Amphibia: Ranidae) in China. Reactogenicity of a three-dose pertussis acellular vaccine catch-up in children 21-40 months of age

Abstract The reactogenicity of a three-dose catch-up acellular pertussis (aP) immunization of children at 21–40 months of age was evaluated. Vaccination was well-tolerated: fever ≥38°C was reported after 5% of administered doses and local reactions after 14–15%. The onset of adverse events was not associated with age at vaccination, interval between doses or previous presence of antibodies against pertussis, whereas injection in sites other than the buttock and presence of the same symptom after a previous dose were associated with higher reactogenicity. Serological evidence of Brucella species infection in odontocetes from the south Pacific and the Mediterranean

Sera from 58 odontocetes taken in fisheries off Peru in 1993 to 1995 and from 24-cetaceans stranded along the Spanish coast of the Mediterranean in 1997 to 1999 were tested for the presence of Brucella species antibodies in competitive and indirect ELISAS (cELISA and iELISA). Among the animals from Peru, 21 of 27 (77.8 per cent) Lagenorhynchus obscurus, three of six Delphinus capensis, one of two inshore and two of three offshore Tursiops truncatus and five of 20 (25 per cent) Phocoena spinipinnis were positive in the cELISA.
