Severe scleral dellen as an early complication of pterygium excision with simple conjunctival closure and review of the literature

2014

Long-Term Results after Interval Therapy with Intratympanic Gentamicin for Meni??re???s Disease

2004

Objectives The new single-shot and interval treatment for Meniere's disease with gentamicin was designed to avoid cochlear damage during treatment with gentamicin. Methods To date, 90 patients were treated with the single-shot or interval gentamicin therapy. Fifty-seven cases of Meniere's disease were followed up prospectively between 2 and 4 years. During one treatment series, a maximum of three intratympanic gentamicin injections within 15 days were applied, each consisting of 0.3 mL (12 mg) of gentamicin (days 1, 8, and 15). Thirty of these 57 patients (53%) needed only one injection to be controlled (single-shot treatment). Results Vertigo attacks were completely controlled in 95% and p…

Controlled Delivery of Gentamicin Antibiotic from Bioactive Electrospun Polylactide-Based Ultrathin Fibers

2011

The purpose of this study was to generate ultrathin fibers based on polylactide (PLA) biopolyester with antimicrobial controlled release capacity to treat bacterial infections. To achieve this objective, gentamicin antibiotic was encapsulated into pure PLA fibers, a blend of PLA–collagen and coaxial fibers containing a skin of PLA and a core of collagen using the electrospinning technique. The morphology of the gentamicin-loaded fibers and the antibiotic distribution within the fibers were examined by SEM and TEM. The drug delivery profile of the different electrospun fibers was analyzed using a spectrophotometric method. The performance for treating common possible post-surgical infections…

Beneficial Read-Through of aUSH1CNonsense Mutation by Designed Aminoglycoside NB30 in the Retina

2010

PURPOSE. The human Usher syndrome (USH) is the most frequent cause of inherited combined deaf-blindness. USH is clinically and genetically heterogeneous, assigned to three clinical types. The most severe type is USH1, characterized by profound inner ear defects and retinitis pigmentosa. Thus far, no effective treatment for the ophthalmic component of USH exists. The p.R31X nonsense mutation in USH1C leads to a disease causing premature termination of gene translation. Here, we investigated the capability of the novel synthetic aminoglycoside NB30 for the translational read-through of the USH1C-p.R31X nonsense mutation as a retinal therapy option. METHODS. Read-through of p.R31X by three com…

A comparative study of the population pharmacokinetics of gentamicin and amikacin in newborn patients

1993

SUMMARY The population kinetics of gentamicin and amikacin were studied comparatively in newborn patients with a similar range of gestation age (37.9 ± 2.9 and 36.7 ± 3.6 weeks), postnatal age (13.8 ± 7.4 and 16.7 ± 7 days) and weight (2.85 ± 0.57 and 2.72 ± 0.75 kg), undergoing routine therapeutic monitoring of their serum levels. Individual kinetic analysis of serum drug levels was done using a single-compartment model. The population model employed assumes the existence of residual variability in the serum concentrations and interindividual variability in the pharmacokinetic parameters. The clearance and the apparent distribution volume were calculated for each patient using a two-stage …

Farmacocinética del metronidazol y la gentamicina en dosis única preoperatoria para profilaxis antibiótica quirúrgica en cirugía colorrectal

2008

Objective: To describe, in patients undergoing colorectal surgery (CRS), the pharmacokinetics of a single, prophylactic preoperative dose of 1,500 mg of metronidazole plus 240 mg gentamicin and measure its efficacy in accordance with the accepted pharmacodynamic and microbiological parameters. Method: Thirty-six patients undergoing CRS agreed to participate in the study. Three blood samples were taken from each. Cmax 15 minutes after finishing the infusion of the mixture, CfinIQ on finishing the surgery, and Cmin between 12 and 24 hours post-administration. The concentrations of metronidazole and gentamicin in each simple were measured and the pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated (dV- …

Simultaneous screening and quantification of aminoglycoside antibiotics in honey using mixed-mode liquid chromatography with quadrupole time-of-fligh…

2018

An analytical method based on liquid chromatography with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry has been developed for the simultaneous determination of six aminoglycoside antibiotics in honey. The sample pretreatment included extraction with aqueous trichloroacetic acid followed by solid-phase extraction on Strata-X polymeric reversed phase cartridges. Liquid chromatography separation was performed on an Obelisc R zwitterionic type mixed-mode column. An ionBooster™ heated electrospray source was used and showed enhanced ionization efficiency in comparison to a conventional electrospray source. The observed signal enhancement ranged from 3- (neomycin) to 16-fold (gentamicin C1). A data…

Comparative study of the effect of gentamicin on the vestibulo-ocular and visual vestibulo-ocular reflexes in the cat.

1991

The ototoxic effect of an aminoglycoside, gentamicin, on the vestibular system was investigated in cats given daily doses of 40 mg/kg i.m. for 14 days. Periodically, measurements were made of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and visual vestibulo-ocular reflex (ViVOR) responses induced by rotatory stimuli at various frequencies from 0.0125 Hz to 0.8 Hz. After the cessation of drug administration, a progressively declining response to VOR stimuli continued, manifested by gain (ratio of peak response to peak stimulus amplitude) and phase relationships. The ViVOR was affected only in the gain measurements. The changes in the response amplitude (gain) were greater for the VOR than for the ViVOR…

Cilium induction triggers differentiation of glioma stem cells

2020

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) possesses glioma stem cells (GSCs) that promote self-renewal, tumor propagation, and relapse. GBM has a poor prognosis, and currently, there are no curative options exist. Understanding the mechanisms of GSCs self-renewal can offer targeted therapeutic interventions. However, insufficient knowledge of the fundamental biology of GSCs is a significant bottleneck hindering these efforts. Here, we show that patient-derived GSCs recruit an elevated level of proteins that ensure the temporal cilium disassembly, leading to suppressed ciliogenesis. Depleting the cilia disassembly complex components at the ciliary base is sufficient to induce ciliogenesis in a subset of…

Here, we show that patient-derived GSCs recruit elevated levels of proteins that ensure the temporal cilium disassembly, leading to suppressed ciliogenesis. Depleting the cilia disassembly complex components is sufficient to induce ciliogenesis in a subset of GSCs via relocating platelet-derived growth factor receptor-alpha (PDGFR-α) to a newly induced cilium.
