Fern-dominated Rock Plant Communities of Tajikistan (Middle Asia)

2015

The results of phytosociological research conducted on the fern vegetation of rock crevices and clefts of the Pamir-Alai Mountains in Tajikistan are presented. During field surveys done in 2010–2013, 78 phytosociological relevés were sampled. Plant species were recorded according to the Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale. A synopsis of the fern communities of the montane and high altitude zones in Tajikistan is proposed. In the examined vegetation plots, species of 9 ferns, 58 angiosperms and 13 mosses were recorded. The most frequent ferns were: Cystopteris fragilis, Cheilanthes persica, Asplenium ruta-muraria, Asplenium ceterach, Adiantum capillus-veneris and Cryptogramma stelleri. Six …

Different trends of neighboring populations of Lesser Kestrel: Effects of climate and other environmental conditions

2019

The sensitivity of population trends to the climate and environment is generally considered a species-specific trait. However, evidence that populations may show different responses to the climate and environmental conditions is growing. Whether this differential sensitivity may arise even among neighboring populations remains elusive. We compared the trends of two neighboring populations of the Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni, using data from a 12-year survey of 158 colonies in Sicily, Italy; the two populations inhabiting a lowland and an highland area, respectively. Population trends were modeled through the TRIM algorithms implemented in R (package rtrim). A reversed U-shaped population t…

Stand structure and spatial pattern of regeneration of Pinus sylvestris in a natural treed mire in Latvia

2009

We examined the regeneration patterns of Pinus sylvestris L. in a natural treed mire in the hemiboreal zone in Latvia. Data on tree stem age and size was collected in 207 fine-scale plots (10 m) and 4 medium-scale plots (400 m). Size structure of living and dead trees was also estimated on transects 180-m and 250-m length and 10-m width. In addition, the vegetation was described in 1-m plots to determine preferred microsites for P. sylvestris establishment. Pinus sylvestris showed continuous regeneration by an inverse J-shaped age and size structure. Pulses of mortality induced by fire were also evident. Regeneration of P. sylvestris was mostly on Sphagnum magellanicam Brid. hummocks free o…

Globularia nudicaulis, a new host of Cucumber mosaic virus

2006

) is a perennial, foundnaturally on European mountains at altitudes between 900 and 2000 m.In June 2004, G. nudicaulis plants, with a yellow mosaic and/or variega-tion on malformed leaves, were noted among plant species cultivated in theBotanical Garden at Bologna University, Italy. No elongated virus-likeparticles were observed in affected-leaf extracts by transmission electronmicroscopy using a leaf dip method. By applying a protein A sandwichenzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (PAS-ELISA) technique ( Edwards Csystemic symptoms were observed in Nicotiana tabacum , N. benthamiana ,N. glutinosa, N. clevelandii and Capsicum annuum, and Cucumis sativusand C. melo. First Report of Leaf Spot and Blight Caused by Ralstonia pickettii on Bird of Paradise Tree in Italy

2008

Bird of Paradise tree (Strelitzia alba (L. f.) Skeels) is an ornamental perennial tropical plant grown in southern Italy. In the summer of 2006 and 2007, a widespread, severe leaf disease was observed on seedlings and 1- to 2-year-old plants in two glasshouses located in eastern Sicily. Disease incidence ranged from 10 to 25%. Symptoms on the leaves consisted of dark brown-to-black stripes of varying length and found between the lateral veins. Lesions sometimes coalesced into a large area of necrotic tissue. Symptomatic tissues were ground in a drop of sterile distilled water (SDW) with a scalpel. Suspensions were streaked on King's medium B (KB), nutrient agar, and yeast extract nutrient …

Survey of Citrus tristeza virus in Southern Italy

2010

After a recent detection of Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) in Calabria (Southern Italy), an investigation was initiated in the spring 2006 to survey for the virus in this Region. The survey showed that CTV was not present in the nurseries which indicated that citrus mother plants and citrus plantlets ready for marketing have fulfilled completely the phytosanitary requirements. CTV was not detected in citrus-growing areas of Catanzaro, Cosenza and Crotone Provinces, but was found, at different levels in infected plants, in some orchards located in the Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia Provinces. Since the virus was detected not only in material illegally imported from abroad but also in local v…

Retrieving and broadcasting near-real-time biophysical parameters from MODIS and SEVIRI receiving stations at the global change unit of the Universit…

2015

We present here the automatic processing chains implemented at the Global Change Unit of the University of Valencia. These allow for a near-real-time retrieval of various biophysical parameters from both Sun-synchronous TERRA/AQUA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer MODIS and geostationary Meteosat Second Generation Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager MSG SEVIRI sensors. Retrieved parameters, namely sea and land surface temperatures SST and LST, respectively, normalized difference vegetation index NDVI, and vegetation condition index VCI, are similar for both sensors, and specific approaches have been developed and implemented for near-real-time parameter retrievals: htt…

The relationship of hydraulic conductance to root system characteristics of peach (Prunus persica) rootstocks

2006

Specific rootstocks can differentially influence the vegetative growth and development of fruit trees. However, the physiological mechanism involved in this phenomenon has been elusive. Recent research comparing different peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) rootstocks suggests that the rootstock effect on vegetative growth in peach trees is associated to water relations and more specifically to differences in rootstock hydraulic conductance. This study was intended to confirm differences in hydraulic characteristics of similar size peach trees grafted on different rootstocks and to examine root system characteristics that could be associated with rootstock hydraulic limitations. Trees on roots…

Wanted : pathogenesis-related marker molecules for Fusarium oxysporum

2003

Summary Although Fusarium oxysporum pathogens cause severe wilts in about 80 botanical species, the mechanisms of pathogenicity and symptom induction are poorly understood. Knowledge about the genetic and biochemical pathways involved in the pathogenesis of F. oxysporum would be invaluable in getting targets for both fungicide development and search for biocontrol agents. In this respect, we described the main approaches that have been developed to identify some mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of F. oxysporum . During the last decades, the potential functions triggering of F. oysporum pathogenicity have mainly been investigated by comparing soilborne pathogenic strains with nonpathog…
