Impact of processing conditions on functionality of powders prepared from mixed protein system

2020

International audience; The projection of a global human population of around 9.5 billion by 2050 indicates that the demand for animal protein will double during this period. It seems therefore essential in regard to sustainability and food security to search for alternative protein sources that show nutritional and functional quality close to animal protein ones. In that respect, there is a growing interest in utilizing plant proteins as partial replacers of animal proteins in food. The reintroduction of plant proteins into our diet is a solution already envisaged by some vegetarian or flexitarian diets. In order to broaden this practice, one strategy is the use of protein mixes as an ingr…

Changes in the benthic algal flora and vegetation of a semi-enclosed Mediterranean coastal lagoon (Stagnone di Marsala, Western Sicily)

2014

2015

2012

The authors present the results of a botanical study dealing with the gardens of the Latomie, a complex of spectacular quarries in Syracuse (Sicily) used in ancient times to get stones for building the Greek town, and today totally enclosed by the urban expansion. The present conditions of each garden are analysed as regards the primary arrangement and their exotic and wild flora in order to emphasize both the historical and cultural value, as well as the ecological and natural role of these particular archaeological sites. The presence of significant patches of natural vegetation, together with the development of dangerous invasive plants, suggest urgent actions for the management and valo…

The control of soil borne vascular diseases: Limits of genetic resistance of cultivars and rootstocks for controlling Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melon…

2014

After using resistant cultivars or resistant rootstocks for many years to control soil-borne pathogenic fungi causing wilt disease, growers observe more and more frequently wilt like symptoms in their melon and eggplant cultures. Ctifl, in close collaboration with INRA, regional extension services, and seed companies, set up a study designed to investigate the causative pathological agents. The results show the prevalence of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis race 1-2 yellowing on melon and of Verticillium dahlia on eggplant. Both pathogens are often found together with other pathogenic soil fungi, which act as aggravating factors. The isolates of F. oxysporum f. sp. melonis collected from i…

High Resolution-magic Angle Spinning NMR Study of Olive Leaves

2013

In recent years HR-MAS 1H NMR spectroscopy has proven to be a useful tool for the rapid determination of the metabolic profile of several solid and semisolid foods, such as fruits and vegetables, cheese and meat. Olive leaves are today recognized as direct sources of bioactive compounds and natural antioxidants (flavonoids, secoiridoids) suitable as food additives, and their extracts form the basis of beauty care products and pharmaceutical supplements. Thus, olive leaves are emerging as a new and potentially important product for olive tree growing regions. In this report we present the application of 1H and 13C HR-MAS 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy for the characterization and analysis of tri…
