Oval fiber posts do not improve adaptation to oval-shaped canal walls.

Abstract Introduction Oval fiber posts attempt to provide better adaptation to root canals. The hypothesis of this study was that there are no differences in adaptation of oval and circular fiber posts to canal walls. Methods Posts were inserted in 20 canals; 10 were oval, and 10 were circular. The posts were cemented with composite cement. Coronal, middle, and apical sections were observed through a microscope. The space occupied by the post and the maximum distance between it and the canal wall were calculated. The 2 groups were compared with analysis of variance. Transmembrane electrochemistry of erythrocytes: Direct electrochemical test for detecting hemolysis in whole blood

A rapid method for detecting hemolysis in whole blood based on a direct electrochemical assay either in venous blood and finger blood, respectively at glassy carbon and screen-printed graphite electrodes is described. The presence of hemolysis is detected from characteristic voltammetric signatures associated to Fe-heme units in healthy and hemolyzed erythrocytes. The voltammetric response of blood was also investigated using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and involved transmembrane electrochemistry of erythrocytes superimposed to molecular electrochemistry of heme-containing proteins and heme fragments in the plasma. Effect of sodium to barium substitution on the space charge implementation in thermally poled glasses for nonlinear optical applications

Thermally poled niobium borophosphate glasses in the system 0.55(0.95-y) NaPO{sub 3}+y/2 Ba(PO{sub 3}){sub 2}+0.05Na{sub 2}B{sub 4}O{sub 7})+0.45Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} were investigated for second order optical nonlinear (SON) properties. Bulk glasses were studied by Raman spectroscopy, thermal analysis, optical and dielectric measurements. The sodium to barium substitution does not lead to significant changes in optical properties, crystallization of glasses and coordination environment of polarizable niobium atoms. Continuous fractionation of poly[(dimethylimino)decamethylene bromide] and molecular weight dependence of the glass transition

30 g of the ionene poly[(dimethylimino)decamethylene bromide] were fractionated by a continuous counter-current extraction method (CPF) using ethylene glycol monoethyl ether as the solvent and diisopropyl ether as the non-solvent component. The efficiency of the separation was checked by viscometry and gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) measurements. Eight fractions of different molar mass were prepared for differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments. With bromide as counter-ion, the glass transition temperature of the ionene increases from ca. 60 to 85°C as the intrinsic viscosity of this material (in 0,4 M aqueous solutions of KBr at 25°C) rises from ca. 14 to 22 mL/g. Electrochemistry of copper complexes with macrocyclic polyamines containing pyrazole units.

The voltammetric behaviour of bi- and mono-nuclear complexes formed in solution by Cu(2+) with three polyazacyclophanes containing pyrazole units in aqueous solution is described. Cyclic and square wave voltammetric responses at glassy carbon electrodes indicate that the reduction of copper-macrocycle complexes in solution takes place in two successive one-electron per Cu transfer processes coupled with preorganization and protonation reactions that mimic the behaviour of superoxide dismutase. Polyacrylates in aqueous solution. The dependence of protonation on molecular weight, ionic medium and ionic strength

Abstract The protonation constants of polyacrylates with different molecular weights ( W =2000–750 000 Da) were determined in different ionic media (alkali metal chlorides and nitrates, tetraalkylammonium chlorides), at 25 °C, by potentiometric measurements (H + –glass electrode). Literature data were also considered. Different models used to analyse protonation data were compared: the first was the modified Henderson–Hasselbalch two-parameter equation, and the second was the three-parameter equation proposed by Hogfeldt. ON THE EFFECTS OF A CRACK PROPAGATING TOWARD THE INTERFACE OF A BIMATERIAL SYSTEM

This paper deals with the influence of matrix cracks on the failure mode of bimaterial systems and composite materials. In order to investigate such an influence, the stress field near a crack embedded into the more yielding material and propagating perpendicularly to the interface, has been analyzed by using systematic numerical simulations. Such analysis has shown that the crack propagation give rises to transversal stresses that can damage the reinforcing materials when this has low modulus, as glass fibers, or low transversal strength, such as carbon fibers. Deep blue glasses coloured by octahedral Fe 2+ cations are often reported as textbook examples of blue pigmentation. However, despite the possibility of laboratory synthesis under reducing conditions, to date there are no well-reported occurrences of their production and use in the past.
