Discriminating impacts of geomorphological and human factors on vineyard soil erosion (Burgundy, France)
2014
International audience; The Burgundy vineyards have been recognized for the high diversity of Terroirs, controlled by complex interactions between natural features, historical parameters and soil management practices. Vineyards are known to undergo substantial soil loss in comparison with other types of agricultural land. Hydric erosion on vineyards is controlled by complex interactions of natural and anthropogenic factors leading to intra-plot spatial heterogeneities of topsoil at a scale of a metre. Studying the relationship between soils and their degradation is crucial in this situation where soil sustainability is threatened. This study explores the relative influences of historical an…
Prawa człowieka w rzeczywistości globalnej wioski
2015
The area widely and loudly discussed, often raised in the public discourse is the topic of human rights. This topic is not new, it was already known in antiquity. Today it acquires a specific context of a shrinking global reality. As a result of computerization and media the world has become a global village, in which the events happening in the one place can at the same time can be reported in another. On the one hand we can see the cultural diversity and on the other there is a global diffusion of symbols and values. So does globalization help or impede the adoption of the same rights as fundamental human rights? Is the universality of these rights possible? Or perhaps cultural difference…
On heuristic hybrid methods and structured point sets in global continuous optimization
2004
Heikki Maaranen tutki väitöskirjassaan kuinka globaalin optimoinnin menetelmiä jatkuvien muuttujien tehtäville voidaan parantaa hybridisointia ja strukturaalisia pistejoukkoja käyttämällä. In this work, we concentrate on improving the performance of global methods for continuous optimization via hybridization and the use of structured point sets. Optimization is an important part of solving real-life problems. The problem solving process involves modeling, simulation and optimization of the simulated model, after which the results can be applied into practice, for example, in product manufacturing. Many of the real-life problems can be formulated as global continuous optimization problems. …

Global Communication with Icons : Hotel Safety as an Environmental Context
2015
Icons are small signs with fixed meanings. Icons are usually context specific. For example in the context of a hotel, the client can often find icons in hotel room books and safety guides. Scandic Hotel chain, for example, currently provides the manual for its safety system in 14 languages. There are at least two major shortcomings of this system: (1) in emergency or panic situations, it is very difficult to find your own language from the leaflet, and (2) there are no Asian languages. There is an obvious need for a global icon-based hotel safety language. In our paper, we introduce an icon-based model, language and mobile application for hotel safety. peerReviewed
Density Decline in a Mediterranean Seahorse Population: Natural Fluctuations or New Emerging Threats?
2021
Illegal wildlife trade is considered one of the most serious threats to biodiversity worldwide, along with habitat loss/degradation and overfishing of wild stocks. Seahorses are considered at high risk as these fish represent an important component of traditional Chinese medicine but are also sold as curios and ornamental fish. On a worldwide level, illegal trade is controlled by numerous laws and regulations, but it seems to continue by assuming more dynamic routes. In the Mediterranean Sea, Hippocampus guttulatus formed one of the largest populations at Mar Piccolo di Taranto in South-Eastern Italy. During the routine monitoring of this population in 2016, a dramatic density decrease was …
Bridge over Troubled Water: Italy and the Black Mediterranean
2022
Since ancient times, Italy has served as a bridge between Africa and Europe, facilitating exchanges of goods, crops, legends, human beings, and deities. In recent decades, this role has come back to everyone’s attention because of the flows that have turned the Mediterranean into one of the main crossroads on the global migratory chessboard. Several young Africans have embarked the Mediterranean Passage. Some have arrived to the opposite shore, whereas some have not. The survivors have reshaped the history of the African Diaspora. The history of the Black Mediterranean resonates with that of the Black Atlantic. Moreover, the considerable presence of an African Italian community inevitably l…
Labējo populistu partiju salīdzinājums Somijā un Igaunijā
2019
Šajā pētnieciskajā darbā ‘‘Labējo populistu partiju salīdzinājums Somijā un Igaunijā” tiek aplūkota ne tikai ļoti aktuāla, bet iespējams arī viena no nozīmīgākajām tēmām pasaules politikā pēdējos 30 gados – populisms. Šī darba mērķis bija censties noskaidrot vai izmantojot ‘‘The Four D’s” modeli ir iespējams pierādīt, ka salīdzinātajām Somijas un Igaunijas partijām ir kopīga nacionālā populisma identitāte un, ka tās pieder pie vienas „partiju ģimenes”. Kā teorētiskā pieeja tiek izmantota Cas Mudes (Cas Mudde) „populisma” jēdziena definīcija un „partiju ģimeņu” teorētiskais ietvars. Empīriskajā daļā teorētisko pamatu veido Rodžera Ītvela (Roger Eatwell) un Metjū Gudvina (Matthew Goodwin) ‘‘F…
The role of maternal effects in host-parasite interactions: examination of the development of the immune defense in a colonial seabird, the black-leg…
2004
One of the main aims of evolutionary biology is to understand the mechanisms responsible for the phenotypic variation on which natural selection can act. Maternal effects occur when a mother's phenotype or her environment influence her offspring's phenotype. Despite the importance of such effects for the ecology of host-parasite interactions, their role has been relatively neglected to date. In this thesis, we examined how mothers influence the immune defense of their young in an environment that varies in space and time. This work has primarily focused on a colonial seabird, the black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla). Using this model, we have first shown that specific maternal antibodi…
