Is the influence of the industrial district on international activities being eroded by globalization?
2009
Abstract This study provides insight into the impact of industrial districts on the international activities of firms, in the particular context of one traditional manufacturing industry: the Spanish home-textile industry. Using a sample of 128 manufacturing firms, the paper shows how location influences the timing and levels of exports and imports. Moreover, our results demonstrate how these influences have been diluted in recent years as the home-textile industry becomes more involved in the global arena. Our findings challenge some key arguments exploring the advantages of the district in the international activities of firms; in particular, first, in questioning the capacity of the dist…
‘The Great War’ in the Auto-Making Industry. Banal Nationalism and Symbolic Domination and Country-of-Origin Effect in Consumer Culture
2020
In spite of ongoing economic globalization, country-of-origin effect (COO) still remains crucial for corporate marketing and advertising strategies in consumer markets. Such nationalism has now com...
Intensity of Italy's agri-food trade with countries outside the EU Mediterranean
2013
This paper aims to present a framework of trade relations between Italy and the countries of southern and eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea. More specifically, using the indicators proposed in the analysis of international trade, we want to analyse the intensity of trade in agri-food products and the strength of trade ties between the bordering Mediterranean countries. The analysis of the intensity of trade flows of food products from Italy and the partner countries of North Africa and the Near East has allowed us to trace a network of flows between the countries in the area. If we can see an overall weakening of the agri-food trade, the analysis for individual partner states, however…
Consumption of spices and ethnic contamination in the daily diet of Italians - consumers’ preferences and modification of eating habits
2021
AbstractCurrently, consumers appear to have diversified characteristics with regard to food tastes and consumption habits. The globalization of markets and the migration phenomenon contributed to the modification of food preferences of consumers who gradually introduce into their eating habits foods and recipes typical of the tradition of foreign countries. In this scenario, also in Italy, it is going to increase the use of “foreign products” with the consequent fusion of traditional cuisine techniques and recipes with ingredients that are typical of foreign countries and cultures. Foods and ingredients originally consumed in Asian or South American countries are increasingly consumed by It…
The socio-ecology of zoonotic infections
2011
The resurgence of infectious diseases of zoonotic origin observed in recent years imposes a major morbidity/mortality burden worldwide, and also a major economic burden that extends beyond pure medical costs. The resurgence and epidemiology of zoonoses are complex and dynamic, being influenced by varying parameters that can roughly be categorized as human-related, pathogen-related, and climate/environment-related; however, there is significant interplay between these factors. Human-related factors include modern life trends such as ecotourism, increased exposure through hunting or pet owning, and culinary habits, industrialization sequelae such as farming/food chain intensification, globali…
Editorial. Migration and migration studies in late neoliberal times
2021
We are witnessing an “ostentatiously inhuman” (ostentatamente disumana) (Ferrajoli 2018) politics directed against migrant women and men in every part of the world, particularly in the more affluent countries. These countries were formerly referred to as developed countries, thus using a term that failed to cover over the colonialist rhetoric used against less developed ones. The same rhetoric resurfaces today, as shown by those countries that have recently joined the network of global(ised) development. This politics makes no distinctions based on age, religious orientation, economic, social, and political motivations of migration. We are facing a “war against migrations” (Palidda 2018) in…

Quo vadis, CIUTI?
2012
Emotions and epistemology: a path for reconsideration in the 21st century
2017
The present paper explores the gap between sensations and emotions in the global capitalism. We held the thesis that there are diverse ways to systematise the theoretical orientations on which the studies on the body/emotion are based; a possible one, having in mind the Latin American context and without intent of exhaustiveness, is the following: a) a line of work connected to Foucault and his concepts of control, discipline, and technologies of the self; b) an approach connected to Bourdieu and his notions of habitus, body hexis, and social fields; c) a set of investigations in the field of biopolitics referring to Esposito and Agamben on the one hand, and to Negri and Hardt on the other;…
Clubes y selecciones nacionales de fútbol. La dimensión etnoterritorial del fútbol español
2006
The first part of this paper shows, from a general viewpoint, the historical simultaneity in the emergence and development of football and the building of modern Nation-States, as well as their next differentiation in the socio-economical context of globalization. This differentiation or institutional separation implies an alteration and readjustment of the identity dynamic associated to this sport. Above this historical and conceptual background we consider a research on the ethnoterritorial dimension of the Spanish football. After dedicating the second part of the article to study some ethnoterritorial keys of his historic development, in the third part we present the analysis of the Span…
