Power ultrasound irradiation during the alkaline etching process of the 2024 aluminium alloy

2015

Abstract Prior to any surface treatment on an aluminum alloy, a surface preparation is necessary. This commonly consists in performing an alkaline etching followed by acid deoxidizing. In this work, the use of power ultrasound irradiation during the etching step on the 2024 aluminum alloy was studied. The etching rate was estimated by weight loss, and the alkaline film formed during the etching step was characterized by glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GDOES) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The benefit of power ultrasound during the etching step was confirmed by pitting potential measurement in NaCl solution after a post-treatment (anodizing).

Ultra-low density metallic foams synthesized by contact glow discharge electrolysis (CGDE) for laser experiments★

2018

International audience; The goal of this work is to realize metallic foams synthesized by contact glow discharge electrolysis with specific characteristics. In this paper, we show the results of our studies, consisting in investigating parameters that influence the foams characteristics. Thus, the morphology of metallic foams is examined through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations with the acid nature. Moreover, the evolution of the mass and the volume of metallic foams with two experimental parameters (overvoltage and gold concentration) is also investigated. The acid nature affects the foams microscopic structure highlighted by the SEM observations, but for now no valid explan…

Surface investigation of plasma HMDSO membranes post-treated by CF4/Ar plasma

2002

Fluorination treatment has been performed on polysiloxane membranes using a plasma glow discharge of a gases mixture CF4 and argon (plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition). Atomic force microscopy, XPS analyses and contact angle measurements have been undertaken to explain the surface transformation and behavior, which strongly depend on the morphology, the composition and the hydrophilic/hydrophobic character of the plasma-polymerized initial membranes. Main result is that fluorination, which leads to hydrophobic membranes, has a more relevant effect on amorphous silica-like membranes than on polymer-like ones, according to their chemical composition whereas the plasma surface reaction …

Structural Analysis and Photocurrent Spectroscopy of CCCs on 99.99% Aluminum

2003

A characterization of chromate conversion coatings (CCCs) formed in the presence and in the absence of accelerator (ferroferricyanide redox couple) has been performed by various techniques (transmission electron microscopy, TEM, glow discharge optical emission spectrometry, GDOES, X-ray absorption near-end structure, XANES, and photon correlation spectroscopy). The results of a detailed investigation on morphological, compositional, and solid-state properties of freshly converted aluminum samples at different immersion times (30 s-90 min) are reported. The TEM and GDOES data suggest the presence of iron-cyanide species only in the external layer of CCC of nearly constant thickness. The XANE…

RADIOISOTOPE MASS SPECTROMETRY

2003

Mass spectrometric methods are very sensitive and enable in many cases a multielement determination of trace and ultratrace elements combined with a good isotopic analysis ( Bacon et al. , 2001 ). Therefore, these techniques are also applied for the detection of long-lived radionuclides ( Becker and Dietze, 2000 ) mainly in environmental samples ( Adriaens et al. , 1992 ; Bailey et al. , 1993 ; Bibler et al. , 1998 ; Eroglu et al. , 1998 ; Edmonds et al. , 1998 ; Becker and Dietze, 1999 ; Wendt et al. , 1999 ), nuclear materials ( Betti, 1997 ; Chartier et al. , 1999 ), glass and ceramics ( Rohr et al. , 1994 ; Fukuda and Sayama, 1997 ), and in high-purity substances ( Beer and Heumann, 199…

Overview of first Wendelstein 7-X high-performance operation

2019

Abstract The optimized superconducting stellarator device Wendelstein 7-X (with major radius , minor radius , and plasma volume) restarted operation after the assembly of a graphite heat shield and 10 inertially cooled island divertor modules. This paper reports on the results from the first high-performance plasma operation. Glow discharge conditioning and ECRH conditioning discharges in helium turned out to be important for density and edge radiation control. Plasma densities of with central electron temperatures were routinely achieved with hydrogen gas fueling, frequently terminated by a radiative collapse. In a first stage, plasma densities up to were reached with hydrogen pellet injec…

Dunham coefficients of 14N2 from CARS measurements of high vibrational states in a low-pressure discharge

1988

Spectroscopic constants of the X1Σg+ ground state of 14N2 are deduced from CARS spectra recorded in a 4 Torr d.c. N2 glow discharge. Vibrational states up to ν = 14 have been observed but only the 11 lower levels which have a good signal-to-noise ratio have been processed. The Dunham constants that were deduced yield vibrational band centre positions in good agreement with those of Lofthus and Krupenie.

Dynamic regimes of cyclotron instability in the afterglow mode of minimum-B electron cyclotron resonance ion source plasma

2016

The paper is concerned with the dynamic regimes of cyclotron instabilities in non-equilibrium plasma of a minimum-B electron cyclotron resonance ion source operated in pulsed mode. The instability appears in decaying ion source plasma shortly (1–10 ms) after switching off the microwave radiation of the klystron, and manifests itself in the form of powerful pulses of electromagnetic emission associated with precipitation of high-energy electrons along the magnetic field lines. Recently it was shown that this plasma instability causes perturbations of the extracted ion current, which limits the performance of the ion source and generates strong bursts of bremsstrahlung emission. In this artic…
