Changes in carbohydrate metabolism in the eelanguilla anguilla, during short‐term exposure to diazinon

The present communication deals with the effect of diazinon (0.042 mg/L) on the energy metabolism of the european eel Anguilla anguilla. Analysis of various parameters such as glycogen, lactate and glucose was made on different eel tissues after 6, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr of diazinon exposure. Liver and muscle glycogen content decreased significantly (p < 0.05) from 6 to 96 hr pesticide exposure. Mean blood glucose values were elevated significantly after exposure to this sublethal diazinon concentration. Metabolic enzymes in coelomic cells (eleocytes) of the polychaete Nereis virens: sex specific changes during sexual maturation

The activities of some enzymes of the intermediary metabolism and the content of soluble protein and carbohydrate (glycogen plus free glucose) were measured in one type of coelomic cells (eleocytes) of the polychaete Nereis virens. Specimens used in this study were collected between 1989 and 1991 in Oosterscheldt Bay, The Netherlands, and divided into six different stages of sexual maturation as determined by the mean oocyte volume. In both sexes, the soluble protein content in eleocytes of immature individuals (11 mg ml−1 cell vol) increased three-fold. Die Bildung von Leber- und Muskelglykogen aus Xylit, Sorbit und Glucose bei gesunden und alloxandiabetischen Ratten

Xylit, Sorbit und Glucose konnen bei Infusion an hungernde Ratten in gleichem Umfang zur Synthese von Leberglykogen verwendet werden. Dies gilt sowohl fur gesunde als auch fur alloxandiabetische Ratten. Auch bei alloxandiabetischen Ratten wird bei dieser Versuchsanordnung Glucose unvermindert zur Synthese von Leberglykogen verwendet. Weder bei gesunden noch alloxandiabetischen Ratten findet man eine signifikante Bildung von Muskelglykogen aus Sorbit oder Xylit. Aus Glucose kann Muskelglykogen nur bei gesunden Tieren, nicht aber bei diabetischen gebildet werden.

Metabolism of rat liver cells during incubation in cold UW solution

Simple cold storage of livers for transplantation activates glycolysis due to lack of oxygen. Energy derived from glycolysis may be critical for cell survival and liver cell death may occur once glycolysis is inhibited in the liver due to accumulation of end products or lack of substrates (glycogen). The relationship between cell death (lactate dehydrogenase, LDH release), anaerobic glycolysis (lactate production), and glycogen content of liver tissue was studied during cold incubation of liver slices in UW solution. Effects of lindane on fish carbohydrate metabolism.

Exposure of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) to a high sublethal concentration of 0.335 ppm (0.50 of the 96-hr LC50) of lindane for 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr affected carbohydrate metabolism. Muscle glycogen levels decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) at 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr; liver glycogen content did not decline at any time. Muscle glucose levels in fish were elevated at 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr but in liver, the levels increased only at 96 hr. Lindane-induced changes in carbohydrate metabolism in Anguilla anguilla

Abstract 1. Anguilla anguilla (L.) was exposed to a sublethal concentration of 0.167 ppm (0.25 of the 96-hr lc 50 ) of lindane for 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr. 2. Changes in glycogen, glucose, pyruvate and lactate contents of liver and muscle after lindane exposure, were studied. 3. Muscle and liver glycogen levels decreased significantly during the exposure time. Muscle glucose values increased but on the other hand we found a decrease in those of liver. 4. Muscle and liver pyruvate content increased as did lactate levels in both tissues. 5. The observed effects of lindane on carbohydrate metabolism in fish are discussed in relation to acute stress syndrome.

Liver energy metabolism of Anguilla anguilla after exposure to fenitrothion.

This paper deals with the effect of fenitrothion (0.04 mg/liter) on the energy metabolism of the European eel, Anguilla anguilla, and its recovery from intoxication. Various parameters such as glycogen, lactate, proteins, total lipids, and glucose in eel liver and blood were analyzed after 2, 8, 12, 24, 32, 48, 56, 72, and 96 h of fenitrothion exposure. Subsequently, the fish were allowed recovery periods of 8, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 144, and 192 h in clean water, and the same parameters were evaluated. The influence of a guinea pig lymphokine preparation on the oxidative metabolism of human and guinea pig granulocytes of various sources was investigated. A dose-dependent increase of the oxidative burst following lymphokine challenge was observed. It occurred in unstimulated guinea pig peripheral polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) and in prestimulated PMN obtained from the peritoneal cavity after glycogen injection as well. The lymphokine effect on the oxidative metabolism is not species-restricted because the guinea pig lymphokine preparation elicits an oxidative burst in human PMN, too.
