Polyunsaturated fatty acids in cultured cardiomyocytes : effect on physiology and beta-adrenoceptor function

This study was carried out to investigate the influence of the membrane fatty acid composition on the basal electrical and contractile activities and the response to beta-adrenergic stimulation of rat cardiac muscle cells in culture. Cells were grown for 3 days in a conventional serum culture medium and then incubated for 24 h in synthetic media containing either n-6 or n-3 as the sole source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The n-6/n-3 ratio in the phospholipids was 0.9 in the n-3 cells and 13.1 in the n-6 cells compared with 6.3 in controls cells. In this chapter we shall define a class of rewriting systems called context-free grammars. The left-hand side of a rule in a context-free grammar consists of a single symbol, so that symbols are rewritten “context-freely”. Context-free grammars are of central importance to us because they define the class of context-free languages, the parsing of which is the subject of this book. In this chapter we shall consider some structural properties of context-free grammars which are of importance in parsing. Also, a basic method for recognizing context-free languages will be given.

We consider the following problem: A researcher identified a small number of molecules with a certain property of interest and now wants to find further molecules sharing this property in a database. This can be described as learning molecular classes from small numbers of positive examples. In this work, we propose a method that is based on learning a graph grammar for the molecular class. We consider the type of graph grammars proposed by Althaus et al. [2], as it can be easily interpreted and allows relatively efficient queries. The visual control of our own hand when dealing with an object and the observation of interactions between other people's hand and objects can be involved in the construction of internal representations of our own hand, as well as in hand recognition processes. Therefore, a different effect on handedness recognition is expected when subjects are presented with hands holding objects with either a congruent or an incongruent type of grip. A Cognitive Model of Trust for Biological and Artificial Humanoid Robots

Abstract This paper presents a model of trust for biological and artificial humanoid robots and agents as antecedent condition of interaction. We discuss the cognitive engines of social perception that accounts for the units on which agents operate and the rules they follow when they bestow trust and assess trustworthiness. We propose that this structural information is the domain of the model. The model represents it in terms of modular cognitive structures connected by a parallel architecture. Finally we give a preliminary formalization of the model in the mathematical framework of the I/O automata for future computational and human-humanoid application.
Why Untrained Control Groups Provide Invalid Baselines: A Reply to Dienes and Altmann

Dienes and Altmann argue that an untrained control group provides a reliable baseline to measure artificial grammar learning. In this reply, we first provide a fictitious example to demonstrate that this assessment is faulty. We then analyse why this assessment is wrong, and we reiterate the solution proposed in Reber and Perruchet (this issue) for a proper control. International audience; The present chapter focuses on implicit learning processes, and aims at showing that these processes could be used to design new methods of education or reeducation. After a brief definition of what we intend by implicit learning, we will show that these processes operate efficiently in development, from infancy to aging. Then, we will discuss the question of their resistance to neurological or psychiatric diseases. Finally, in a last section, we will comment on their potential use within an applied perspective.
