In between the inequalities of Sobolev and Hardy

2015

We establish both sufficient and necessary conditions for the validity of the so-called Hardy-Sobolev inequalities on open sets of the Euclidean space. These inequalities form a natural interpolating scale between the (weighted) Sobolev inequalities and the (weighted) Hardy inequalities. The Assouad dimension of the complement of the open set turns out to play an important role in both sufficient and necessary conditions.

On the interior regularity of weak solutions to the 2-D incompressible Euler equations

2016

We study whether some of the non-physical properties observed for weak solutions of the incompressible Euler equations can be ruled out by studying the vorticity formulation. Our main contribution is in developing an interior regularity method in the spirit of De Giorgi–Nash–Moser, showing that local weak solutions are exponentially integrable, uniformly in time, under minimal integrability conditions. This is a Serrin-type interior regularity result $$\begin{aligned} u \in L_\mathrm{loc}^{2+\varepsilon }(\Omega _T) \implies \mathrm{local\ regularity} \end{aligned}$$ for weak solutions in the energy space $$L_t^\infty L_x^2$$ , satisfying appropriate vorticity estimates. We also obtain impr…

On stability of logarithmic tangent sheaves. Symmetric and generic determinants

2021

We prove stability of logarithmic tangent sheaves of singular hypersurfaces D of the projective space with constraints on the dimension and degree of the singularities of D. As main application, we prove that determinants and symmetric determinants have stable logarithmic tangent sheaves and we describe an open dense piece of the associated moduli space.

Hyperbolicity as an obstruction to smoothability for one-dimensional actions

2017

Ghys and Sergiescu proved in the $80$s that Thompson's group $T$, and hence $F$, admits actions by $C^{\infty}$ diffeomorphisms of the circle . They proved that the standard actions of these groups are topologically conjugate to a group of $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms. Monod defined a family of groups of piecewise projective homeomorphisms, and Lodha-Moore defined finitely presentable groups of piecewise projective homeomorphisms. These groups are of particular interest because they are nonamenable and contain no free subgroup. In contrast to the result of Ghys-Sergiescu, we prove that the groups of Monod and Lodha-Moore are not topologically conjugate to a group of $C^1$ diffeomorphisms. Fur…

Weighted estimates for diffeomorphic extensions of homeomorphisms

2019

Let $\Omega \subset \mbr^2$ be an internal chord-arc domain and $\varphi : \mbs^1 \rightarrow \partial \Omega$ be a homeomorphism. Then there is a diffeomorphic extension $h : \mbd \rightarrow \Omega$ of $\varphi .$ We study the relationship between weighted integrability of the derivatives of $h$ and double integrals of $\varphi$ and of $\varphi^{-1} .$

Multiple Points in the Target: The Case of Parameterised Hypersurfaces

2020

We focus on parameterised hypersurfaces, and explore the information one can obtain from the matrix of a presentation of the push-forward of the structure sheaf, through the use of Fitting ideals. We show that in a number of cases the spaces defined by the Fitting ideals are Cohen–Macaulay, extending the previously known range. We prove the Milnor–Tjurina relation for parameterised hypersurfaces whose dimension is no greater than two.

Weyl Asymptotics and Random Perturbations in a One-Dimensional Semi-classical Case

2019

We consider a simple model operator P in dimension 1 and show how random perturbations give rise to Weyl asymptotics in the interior of the range of P. We follow rather closely the work of Hager (Ann Henri Poincare 7(6):1035–1064, 2006) with some input also from Bordeaux Montrieux (Loi de Weyl presque sureet resolvante pour des operateurs differentiels nonautoadjoints, these, CMLS, Ecole Polytechnique, 2008) and Hager–Sjostrand (Math Ann 342(1):177–243, 2008). Some of the general ideas appear perhaps more clearly in this special situation.

On the adjoint group of some radical rings

1997

A ring R is called radical if it coincides with its Jacobson radical, which means that Rforms a group under the operation a ° b = a + b + ab for all a and b in R. This group is called the adjoint group R° of R. The relation between the adjoint group R° and the additive group R+ of a radical rin R is an interesting topic to study. It has been shown in [1] that the finiteness conditions “minimax”, “finite Prufer rank”, “finite abelian subgroup rank” and “finite torsionfree rank” carry over from the adjoint group to the additive group of a radical ring. The converse is true for the minimax condition, while it fails for all the other above finiteness conditions by an example due to Sysak [6] (s…

An isoperimetric type problem for primitive Pythagorean hodograph curves

2012

An isoperimetric type problem for primitive Pythagorean hodograph curves is studied. We show how to compute, for each possible degree, the Pythagorean hodograph curve of a given perimeter enclosing the greatest area. We also discuss the existence and construction of smooth solutions, obtaining a relationship with an interesting sequence of Appell polynomials.

Hurwitz spaces of triple coverings of elliptic curves and moduli spaces of abelian threefolds

2002

We prove that the moduli spaces A_3(D) of polarized abelian threefolds with polarizations of types D=(1,1,2), (1,2,2), (1,1,3) or (1,3,3) are unirational. The result is based on the study of families of simple coverings of elliptic curves of degree 2 or 3 and on the study of the corresponding period mappings associated with holomorphic differentials with trace 0. In particular we prove the unirationality of the Hurwitz space H_{3,A}(Y) which parameterizes simply branched triple coverings of an elliptic curve Y with determinants of the Tschirnhausen modules isomorphic to A^{-1}.
