Electromagnetic sum rules for light nuclei

2008

Electromagnetic sum rules describe gross features of the electromagnetic structure of nuclei 1). A well known example is the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn (TRK) sum rule, which relates the integrated total El-absorption cross section to the ground state expectation value of the double commutator of the dipole operator D with the nuclear Hamiltonian. While the k inet ic energy gives a model independent contr ibut ion, i . e . , the classical sum rule ~cl = 60 NZ/A MeV mb, the nuclear twobody potential gives an additional contr ibution in the presence of exchange and/or momentum dependent (or nonlocal) forces. In this case, I

Translationally invariant coupled cluster method in coordinate space for nuclei

2002

We study a formulation of the translationally invariant coupled cluster method in coordinate space for finite nuclei. The new formulation remedies convergence problems that plagued previous calculations in configuration space. The method is applied to light nuclei using semi-realistic central interactions.

London equation of state for a quantum-hard-sphere system

1994

The London analytical interpolation equation between zero and packing densities for the ground-state energy of a many-boson hard-sphere system is corrected for the reduced mass of a pair of particles in a ``sphere-of-influence'' picture. It is thus brought into good agreement with computer simulations and with experimental results extrapolated out to close packing.

Large shape staggering in neutron-deficient Bi isotopes

2021

The changes in the mean-square charge radius (relative to 209Bi), magnetic dipole, and electric quadrupole moments of 187,188,189,191Bi were measured using the in-source resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique at ISOLDE (CERN). A large staggering in radii was found in 187,188,189Big, manifested by a sharp radius increase for the ground state of 188Bi relative to the neighboring 187,189Big. A large isomer shift was also observed for 188Bim. Both effects happen at the same neutron number, N=105, where the shape staggering and a similar isomer shift were observed in the mercury isotopes. Experimental results are reproduced by mean-field calculations where the ground or isomeric states were…

Spin projected unrestricted Hartree-Fock ground states for harmonic quantum dots

2008

We report results for the ground state energies and wave functions obtained by projecting spatially unrestricted Hartree Fock states to eigenstates of the total spin and the angular momentum for harmonic quantum dots with $N\leq 12$ interacting electrons including a magnetic field states with the correct spatial and spin symmetries have lower energies than those obtained by the unrestricted method. The chemical potential as a function of a perpendicular magnetic field is obtained. Signature of an intrinsic spin blockade effect is found.

Measurement of the Spin and Magnetic Moment ofMg31: Evidence for a Strongly Deformed Intruder Ground State

2005

Unambiguous values of the spin and magnetic moment of $^{31}\mathrm{M}\mathrm{g}$ are obtained by combining the results of a hyperfine-structure measurement and a $\ensuremath{\beta}$-NMR measurement, both performed with an optically polarized ion beam. With a measured nuclear $g$ factor and spin $I=1/2$, the magnetic moment $\ensuremath{\mu}(^{31}\mathrm{M}\mathrm{g})=\ensuremath{-}0.88355(15){\ensuremath{\mu}}_{N}$ is deduced. A revised level scheme of $^{31}\mathrm{M}\mathrm{g}$ ($Z=12$, $N=19$) with ground state spin/parity ${I}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}=1/{2}^{+}$ is presented, revealing the coexistence of 1p-1h and 2p-2h intruder states below 500 keV. Shape coexistence in Au 187 studied by laser spectroscopy

2020

Hyperfine-structure parameters and isotope shift of the 9/2$^−$ isomeric state in $^{187}$Au relative to $^{197}$Au for the 267.6-nm atomic transition have been measured for the first time using the in-source resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique. The magnetic dipole moment and change in the mean-square charge radius for this 9/2$^−$ isomer have been deduced. The observed large isomer shift relative to the 1/2$^+$ ground state in $^{187}$Au confirms the occurrence of the shape coexistence in $^{187}$Au proposed earlier from the analysis of the nuclear spectroscopic data and particle plus triaxial rotor calculations. The analysis of the magnetic moment supports the previously proposed …

First observation of the ground-state hyperfine transition in 209Bi80+

2013

The long sought after ground-state hyperfine transition in lithium-like bismuth 209Bi80+ was observed for the first time using laser spectroscopy on relativistic ions in the experimental storage ring at the GSI Helmholtz Centre in Darmstadt. Combined with the transition in the corresponding hydrogen-like ion 209Bi82+, it will allow extraction of the specific difference between the two transitions that is unaffected by the magnetic moment distribution in the nucleus and can therefore provide a better test of bound-state QED in extremely strong magnetic fields.

Experimental determination of single molecule toroic behaviour in a Dy8 single molecule magnet

2019

The enhancement of toroic motifs through coupling toroidal moments within molecular nanomagnets is a new, interesting and relevant approach for both fundamental research and potential quantum computation applications. We investigate a Dy8 molecular cluster and discover it has a antiferrotoroic ground state with slow magnetic relaxation. The experimental characterization of the magnetic anisotropy axes of each magnetic center and their exchange interactions represents a considerable challenge due to the non-magnetic nature of the toroidal motif. To overcome this and obtain access to the low energy states of Dy8 we establish a multi-orientation single-crystal micro Hall sensor magnetometry ap…

Ground-state properties of generalized Heisenberg chains with composite spin.

1988

We consider in detail the ground-state properties of recently introduced generalized Heisenberg models which can have several spin operators at each site and which interpolate smoothly between Heisenberg chains of different spin lengths. We show that the mappings to field-theoretical models used to describe the critical properties of the Heisenberg model remain valid in the composite-spin model. In models which interpolate between the spin-(1/2 and the spin-1 behavior, these mappings predict an extended singlet phase around the isotropic antiferromagnetic point whenever the models move away from the spin-(1/2 point. Numerical calculations on finite chains seem to confirm the existence of th…
