Essential Oils in Limiting the Development of Various Origins of Phytopathogenic Fusarium Isolates from Wheat Kernels
2022
The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the chemical composition of eight commercial essential oils (EsO) (grapefruit, lemongrass, tea tree (TTO), thyme, verbena, cajeput, Litsea cubeba and garlic) and their fungistatic activity in relation to four species of Fusarium from the Polish population (F. avenaceum FAPL, F. culmorum FCPL, F. graminearum FGPL and F. oxysporum FOPL) and five from the German population (F. culmorum FC1D, F. culmorum FC2D, F. graminearum FG1D, F. graminearum FG2D and F. poae FP0D). In addition, the identification of EsO as potential biofungicides. Phytopathogenic fungi obtained from infected wheat kernels. The species identification of Fusarium …
Effectiveness of the Influence of Selected Essential Oils on the Growth of Parasitic Fusarium Isolated from Wheat Kernels from Central Europe
2021
The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of selected seven commercial essential oils (EsO) (grapefruit, lemongrass, tea tree (TTO), thyme, verbena, cajeput, and Litsea cubeba) on isolates of common Central European parasitic fungal species of Fusarium obtained from infected wheat kernels, and to evaluate the oils as potential natural fungicides. The study was conducted in 2 stages. At each stage, the fungicidal activity of EsO (with concentrations of 0.025
Modeling of anisotropic grain growth in minerals
2001
The role of surface energy anisotropy during grain growth is investigated using both physical experiments on octachloropropane and numerical experiments using the Elle microstructural modelling system. In particular the effects of anisotropy on growth rates, grain shapes and lattice preferred orientations are analysed. Anisotropic growth in thin polycrystalline sheets of octachloropropane is found to systematically remove certain c-axis orientations from the sample, without obviously modifying the grain shapes. By comparison with equivalent numerical experiments, we can explain these observations with a simple boundary layer model that treats each side of each grain boundary as an independe…
Growth rates of late Miocene corals from Crete (Greece)
2006
Modern scleractinian corals are classical components of marine shallow warm water ecosystems. Their occurrence and diversity patterns in the geological record have been widely used to infer past climates and environmental conditions. Coral skeletal composition data reflecting the nature of the coral environment are often affected by diagenetic alteration. Ghost structures of annual growth rhythms are, however, often well preserved in the transformed skeleton. We show that these relicts represent a valuable source of information on growth conditions of fossil corals. Annual growth bands were measured in massive hemispherical Porites of late Miocene age from the island of Crete (Greece) that …
Infrared Microspectroscopy study of insulin crystals at high pressure
2012
During the last years the coupling of high pressure techniques and infrared spectroscopy has proven to be a very powerful tool in the study of conformational changes of proteins. Protein unfolding and monomerization are events that are expected to take place at high pressure due to the peculiarity of pressure to shift the system towards the state that occupies the minimum volume. We observed the growth of apparently cubic crystals at a pressure of about 4 kbar, subjecting to high pressure a solution of misfolded insulin. Even if high pressure is commonly used to tune the growth rate of crystals, protein crystallization at high pressure is not a well known process and no evidences of the par…
Hop (Humulus lupulus L.): Suitability of Traditional Cultivars to a Low-Trellis Farming System in a Semiarid Environment
2022
Humulus lupulus is a dioecious twining herb, with an outstanding vertical development capacity. Hop plants are usually grown on trellises up to 4.5 to 6.0 m high, whose management requires intense use of water, fertilizers, pesticides, and labor. In semiarid Mediterranean areas, where native resources are often scarce, the adoption of low-trellis farming systems could be a sustainable option for hop cultivation. With the aim of evaluating hop suitability to low-trellis cultivation in a Mediterranean environment, in 2018 and 2019 three traditional hop genotypes (‘Cascade’, ‘Chinook’, and ‘Nugget’) were grown, and their development rate was evaluated and put in relation with the plants’ cone,…

Combined action of redox potential and pH on heat resistance and growth recovery of sublethally heat-damaged Escherichia coli
2000
International audience; The combined effect of redox potential (RP) (from -200 to 500 mV) and pH (from 5.0 to 7.0) on the heat resistance and growth recovery after heat treatment of Escherichia coli was tested. The effect of RP on heat resistance was very different depending on the pH. At pH 6.0, there was no significant difference, whereas at pH 5.0 and 7.0 maximum resistance was found in oxidizing conditions while it fell in reducing ones. In sub-lethally heat-damaged cells, low reducing and acid conditions allowed growth ability to be rapidly regained, but a decrease in the redox potential and pH brought about a longer lag phase and a slower exponential growth rate, and even led to growt…
Rapid growth predisposes broilers to necrotic enteritis
2019
Over the past 50 years, intentional genetic selection within the broiler industry has led to major improvements in both body weight gain (BWG) and feed conversion efficiency. Next to its economic advantages, enhancing BWG can increase the risk of metabolic and skeletal disorders. The aim of this study was to examine whether higher BWG is a predisposing factor for broiler necrotic enteritis. In this study, 300 broilers were challenged with Clostridium perfringens using a well-established, previously described challenge model. It was found that birds with higher body weight (BW) and BWG before challenge were predisposed to develop more severe necrotic enteritis lesions. After challenge, the a…
Social entrepreneurship and organizational performance: A study of the mediating role of distinctive competencies in marketing
2019
Abstract Social economy is considered as the option that offers the best response in times of crisis. In this context, social economy companies play an essential role in the promotion of sustainable growth. This research wants to present the importance of social entrepreneurship in the organizational performance of a company. It also aims to show the positive relationship between the extent to which social entrepreneurship is implemented and the creation of distinctive marketing competences, as well as the mediating role these competences have between social entrepreneurship and organizational performance. For this purpose, an analysis of 221 Spanish social-economic entities has been develo…
