Strange vegetation: Emotional undercurrents of Tove Jansson’s Moominvalley in November
2018
Abstract This article investigates the emotional undercurrents of Tove Jansson’s Moominvalley in November. I argue that one of the main characters of Jansson’s book is the autumn forest that surrounds the abandoned Moomin house. The decomposing forest is not just an emblem of the inner lives of the guests that gather in the house but is an active character itself: an ambiguous life form that creeps in the house and must be expelled from its living core. I further demonstrate that the emotion of disgust has a crucial role in Jansson’s narrative, and that an adequate analysis of the intentional content of disgust allows us to see what is at issue in the relations between the characters. In my…
Evidence for extrinsic control of oesophageal primary peristalsis.
1985
AbstractThe role of both peripheral and central mechanism in the control of primary peristalsis was studied in pigeon cervical oesophagus. The results from the transection of oesophageal muscular wall and of extrinsic nerves suggest that :i) primary peristalsis is programmed centrally.ii) extrinsic motor input is carried in glossopharyngeal nerves and distributed separately at each oesophageal level through intramural neurons.iii) intramural neurons do not seem capable of propagating the peristaltic sequence irrespective of the central control.
Current distribution of Pilularia globulifera L. in Poland – changes of geographical range and habitat preferences
2013
Pilularia globulifera is a subatlantic European fern threatened with extinction. In Poland, it reaches the eastern border of its continuous range. Up to the end of the 20th century, it was observed here in 21 stands; only 2 of them existed by the second half of the century, so the species was categorized as critically endangered. Five new locations have been found in western and northwestern Poland during the last 10 years. Abundant and permanent populations grow in 3 locations, while 2 stands were ephemeral. All the current stands are situated in anthropogenic habitats with spontaneous vegetation, in oligotrophic to eutrophic waters. One of the new localities is about …

Subliminal fear priming potentiates negative facial reactions to food pictures in women with anorexia nervosa.
2010
BackgroundTo investigate hedonic reactivity and the influence of unconscious emotional processes on the low sensitivity to positive reinforcement of food in anorexia nervosa (AN).MethodAN and healthy women were exposed to palatable food pictures just after a subliminal exposure to facial expressions (happy, disgust, fear and neutral faces), either while fasting or after a standardized meal (hungerversussatiety). Both implicit [facial electromyographic (EMG) activity from zygomatic and corrugator muscles, skin conductance, heart rate, and videotaped facial behavior] and explicit (self-reported pleasure and desire) measures of affective processes were recorded.ResultsIn contrast to healthy wo…
Oficery pol’skoj i litovskoj armii v 1717-1733 gg
2017
One of the elements of the process of modernization of the two armies of the Poland in the second and third decade of the eighteenth century was an attempt to improve the quality of the officers' staff. However, it took place only in the foreign part of the crown. In the years 1717-1724, its corps of officers was filled by a large group, over 100 officers, who possessed some professional experience of military service in the armies of Western Europe, primarily in Saxony. This undoubtedly contributed to the loyalty of this officer corps to the king, but did not lead to the strengthening of the military capabilities of the Polish army.
Fixed oil from seeds of narrow-leaved ash (F. angustifolia subsp. angustifolia): Chemical profile, antioxidant and antiproliferative activities.
2019
Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. angustifolia is a plant with an age-old use for the production of manna. However, it is also a valuable source of fixed oil rich-seeds. In the present study we examined the chemical and biological properties of this oil in order to support a possible application in foodstuffs, nutraceuticals and cosmetics. Fatty acid composition, volatile and phenolic substances were evaluated. Oleic and linoleic acid represented 45.5% and 50.0%, respectively, of the total fatty acid composition. Among polar phenolic substances identified (secoiridoids, phenylethanoid glycosides, phenolic acids and alcohols, flavonoids, coumarins) isoverbascoside is for the first time reported i…
Athletes’ regulation of emotions experienced during competition: A naturalistic video-assisted study.
2015
This study aimed to identify the type and effectiveness of emotional regulation strategies used by table tennis players to manage their emotions experienced during competition. Using a naturalistic video-assisted approach, 30 interviews were conducted with 11 national table tennis players. Ten emotions were identified in the participants’ transcriptions: anger, anxiety, discouragement, disappointment, disgust, joy, serenity, relief, hope, and pride. Qualitative analyses of participants’ transcriptions revealed the emergence of 4 categories pertaining to emotion regulation: (a) regulation efforts comprising: (i) antecedent-focused regulation (e.g., attention deployment, cognitive change); (i…
