Semiparametric stochastic frontier models: A generalized additive model approach

2017

Abstract The choice of the functional form of the frontier into a stochastic frontier model is typically neglected in applications and canonical functions are usually considered. This paper introduces a semiparametric approach for stochastic frontier estimation that extends previous works based on pseudo-likelihood estimators allowing flexibility in model selection and capability of imposing monotonicity and concavity constraints. For these purposes the present work introduces a generalized additive framework that moreover permits to model the influence of contextual/environmental factors to the hypothesized production process by the relative extension given by generalized additive models f…

Atlas-Based Evaluation of Hemodynamic in Ascending Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms

2021

Atlas-based analyses of patients with cardiovascular diseases have recently been explored to understand the mechanistic link between shape and pathophysiology. The construction of probabilistic atlases is based on statistical shape modeling (SSM) to assess key anatomic features for a given patient population. Such an approach is relevant to study the complex nature of the ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA) as characterized by different patterns of aortic shapes and valve phenotypes. This study was carried out to develop an SSM of the dilated aorta with both bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) and tricuspid aortic valve (TAV), and then assess the computational hemodynamic of virtual models ob…

Genotyping of 9 STR systems in combination with 11 diallelic polymorphisms on the Y-chromosome by fragment analysis and minisequencing

2003

1. IntroductionThe study of Y chromosomal haplotypes and their relationship to human evolution andvariation is increasing rapidly in the fields of anthropology and forensic genetics.Although autosomal STRs are commonly used and very informative for paternity testingand forensic identification, the use of the nonrecombining portion of the Y chromosome isimportant and provides additional data in cases when the offspring is a male or for mixedmale/female crime stains. For this purpose, in the past 2 years, more and more attentionhas been paid to the examination of diallelic polymorphisms (SNPs) on the Y chromosome[1].Here, we describe an approach for the typing of 10 Y-chromosomal diallelic po…

Analysis of 29 Y-chromosome SNPs in a single multiplex useful to predict the geographic origin of male lineages

2006

Abstract The European Consortium “High throughput analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms for the forensic identification of persons—SNPforID” has performed a selection of candidate Y-chromosome SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) for making inferences on the geographic origin of an unknown sample. A “Major Y chromosome haplogroup typing kit” has been developed, which allows the multiplex amplification of 29 SNPs in a single reaction followed by a single base extension (SBE) reaction (minisequencing) and separation of the resulting extension products by capillary electrophoresis.

Dimers of the Higher-Energy Conformer of Formic Acid: Experimental Observation

2012

We report on the first experimental observation of formic acid dimers composed of two molecules of the higher-energy cis conformer. The cis–cis formic acid dimers are prepared in an argon matrix by selective vibrational excitation of the ground state trans conformer (deuterated form HCOOD) combined with thermal annealing of the matrix at about 30 K. Five cis–cis formic acid dimers are predicted by ab initio calculations (interaction energies from −16.9 to −27.2 kJ molˉ¹), and these structures are used for the assignment of the experimental spectra. Selective vibrational excitation of the obtained cis–cis dimers leads to the formation of several trans–cis dimers, which supports the proposed …

Core hole screening and decay rates of double core ionized first row hydrides.

2013

Because of the high intensity, X-ray free electron lasers allow one to create and probe double core ionized states in molecules. The decay of these multiple core ionized states crucially determines the evolution of radiation damage in single molecule diffractive imaging experiments. Here we have studied the Auger decay in hydrides of first row elements after single and double core ionization by quantum mechanical ab initio calculations. In our approach the continuum wave function of the emitted Auger electron is expanded into spherical harmonics on a radial grid. The obtained decay rates of double K-shell vacancies were found to be systematically larger than those for the respective single …

Prediction of phase evolutions during friction stir welding of Ti-grade 5 T-joints using finite element modeling

2022

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state welding technology pioneered by The Welding Institute (TWI) in 1991. Originally used to weld aluminum alloys, it is now effectively utilized to weld high-resistance materials as well. The ultimate mechanical characteristics of the joints are inextricably linked to the microstructural evolutions that occur during the process in terms of phase change. It is then crucial, in order to carry out an effective process engineering, to predict the final material microstructure determined by the thermal history that occurred during the process itself. In the paper, a 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) model for the FSW of T-joints is proposed, based on a therm…

Scientific and technological approaches for sintering and joining of metallic materials by SPS

2013

The flash sintering technique (commonly known as spark plasma sintering, SPS) generates a craze worldwide. This process allows a powder densification from speeds generally 10 to 100 times higher than those of the traditional sintering techniques. In addition, this allows the synthesis of innovative and original dense materials, with a controlled microstructure, complex shapes and, sometimes large sizes. However, the control of scaling and microstructure homogeneity of parts obtained by such a process requires a perfect knowledge of technical equipment including flash sintering to reduce thermal gradients. Modeling is a valuable aid to achieve the improvement of its control. Another potentia…

Ephaptic coupling of myelinated nerve fibers

2001

Numerical predictions of a simple myelinated nerve fiber model are compared with theoretical results in the continuum and discrete limits, clarifying the nature of the conduction process on an isolated nerve axon. Since myelinated nerve fibers are often arranged in bundles, this model is used to study ephaptic (nonsynaptic) interactions between impulses on parallel fibers, which may play a functional role in neural processing.
