Unusual Regioselectivity in the Opening of Epoxides by Carboxylic Acid Enediolates
2008
Addition of carboxylic acid dianions appears to be a potential alternative to the use of aluminium enolates for nucleophilic ring opening of epoxides. These conditions require the use of a sub-stoichiometric amount of amine (10% mol) for dianion generation and the previous activation of the epoxide with LiCl. Yields are good, with high regioselectivity, but the use of styrene oxide led, unexpectedly, to a mixture resulting from the attack on both the primary and secondary carbon atoms. Generally, a low diastereoselectivity is seen on attack at the primary center, however only one diastereoisomer was obtained from attack to the secondary carbon of the styrene oxide.
Late Breaking Abstract - Dose-ranging study of mepolizumab in eosinophilic COPD
2018
Background: Patients with eosinophilic COPD & frequent exacerbations may benefit from mepolizumab (MEP) treatment. Objective: Assess efficacy & safety of 2 MEP doses vs placebo (PBO) in COPD with blood eosinophils ≥150 cells/µL [screening] or ≥300 cells/µL [prior yr], history of ≥2 moderate/≥1 severe exacerbations & ICS+≥2 bronchodilator maintenance therapies (ICS+MT). Methods: Phase III, randomised, PBO-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group trial (METREO); patients received SC MEP 100mg, MEP 300mg or PBO plus ICS+MT, every 4 wks for 52 wks. Primary endpoint: rate/yr of moderate (systemic corticosteroids/antibiotics)/severe(hospitalisation or death) exacerbations. Secondary endpoints inc…

Retention/release equilibrium of aroma compounds in fat-free dairy gels
2010
BACKGROUND: The replacement of fat by thickeners in fat-free yoghurts leads to an important modification of aroma compound partitioning, with an impact on aroma perception. Investigation of retention/release equilibria allows a good understanding of aroma compound behaviour depending on food composition. RESULTS: Vapour/liquid equilibria of ten aroma compounds (two esters, two ketones, three aldehydes and three alcohols) in several media were studied to investigate the influence of pectin addition to fat-free dairy gel on the retention/release equilibrium. The partition coefficient of each aroma compound was measured by headspace analysis at equilibrium in six media (pure water, low-methoxy…
Primo ricerche sulla ultrastruttura dell'uovo delle Ascidie
1959
Summary The cytoplasmic constituents of the unfertilized eggs of Ciona intestinalis were separated by centrifugation and studied at the electron microscope, with the following results. Lipid droplets collect at the centripetal pole; they are boundered by a thin membrane. The yolk granules are homogeneous in appearance; a few have a granular structure. Mitochondria contain numerous cristae; they accumulate in two different layers centripetally and centrifugally to the yolk granules layer respectively. Basophilic material collects at both poles of the egg in two hyaline caps: a centripetal one constituted by small Vesicles and a centrifugal represented by dense clumps. The latter, as well as …
Estimation of the mechanical properties of the eye through the study of its vibrational modes.
2017
Measuring the eye's mechanical properties in vivo and with minimally invasive techniques can be the key for individualized solutions to a number of eye pathologies. The development of such techniques largely relies on a computational modelling of the eyeball and, it optimally requires the synergic interplay between experimentation and numerical simulation. In Astrophysics and Geophysics the remote measurement of structural properties of the systems of their realm is performed on the basis of (helio-)seismic techniques. As a biomechanical system, the eyeball possesses normal vibrational modes encompassing rich information about its structure and mechanical properties. However, the integral a…
Diagnosis and treatment of chronic synovitis in patients with haemophilia: consensus statements from the Italian Association of Haemophilia Centres
2022
Although synovitis is recognized as a marker of joint disease activity, its periodic assessment is not included in routine clinical surveillance of patients with haemophilia (PwH). In order to evaluate the current knowledge and to identify controversial issues, a preliminary literature search by the Musculoskeletal Committee of the Italian Association of Haemophilia Centres (AICE) has been conducted. Statements have been established and sent to the Italian AICE members to collect their level of agreement or disagreement by a Delphi process. Thirty-seven consensus recommendations have been drafted. We found a general agreement on the indication to consider the presence of synovitis as a mark…
Effect of long-term salinity increase on nitritation and denitritation kinetics in activated sludge and granular sludge reactors
2017
The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of moderate and drastic long-termincrease of salinity.Particularly, the study was aimed at assessing the shock effecton nitritationand denitritation kineticsof halophilic biomass inboth forms:flocculent activated sludge and granular sludge.
An Off-On-Off Fluorescent Sensor for pH Windows Based on the 13aneN4-Zn 2+ System
2016
International audience; The new ligand L was prepared and features a 13-membered tetraaza macrocyclic ring with a 1,8-naphthalimide fluorophore appended to a C atom of its backbone. The protonation constants of L as well as its complexation constants with Zn2+ ions were determined in 1:1 water/methanol solutions by potentiometric titrations. Fluorimetric pH titrations were performed with L alone and L in the presence of Zn2+ ions (1:1), and the species distributions (%) versus pH were compared. A window-shaped fluorescence trend was observed with pH for the L/Zn2+ system, which behaves as an off-on-off pH sensor. The on window is centred in the 6.5-7.5 pH range, in correspondence with the f…
Reaction of 2-acetyltetralone with some esters of benzoic acid
1986
In order to investigate the pharmacological screening of a number of pyran-4-ones their synthesis by cyclization with sulphuric acid of the corresponding 1,3,5-triketones has been carried out with high yields. In the course of preparation of the latter the reaction of 2-acetyltetralone with some esters of benzoic acid derivatives has been studied and in particular, for a number of them, an interesting nucleophilic substitution of a chlorine atom with an alkoxy group on a benzenic nucleus has been evidenced.
