An Efficient Synthesis of Tenofovir (PMPA): A Key Intermediate Leading to Tenofovir-Based HIV Medicines

2020

Abstract: Herein, we report further improvements to the synthesis of tenofovir 1, the precursor to tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and tenofovir alafenamide fumarate. Starting from acyclic precursor diaminomalononitrile 12, a four-step protocol to tenofovir 1 will allow for vertical integration for more manufacturers. The key transformation is a more convergent one step procedure from 6 as compared to the current commercial process, with an improved yield from 59% (two steps) to 70%. Further improvements include eliminating the need for problematic magnesium tert-butoxide (MTB) and significant solvent reduction by eliminating the need for an intermediate workup. With the costs of HIV/AIDS tre…

Acceptability of dual HIV/syphilis rapid test in community- and home-based testing strategy among transgender women in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

2021

Background: Little is known of acceptability and feasibility of dual HIV and syphilis rapid tests in community- and home-based provider-initiated strategies among transgender women (TGW), in Latin America. Objectives were (1) to assess the acceptability of this strategy and, (2) to determine the percentage of positive results of HIV and syphilis, analyze the correlates of HIV or syphilis positive results, and measure the rates of effective referral and treatment completion among TGW. Methods: A multidisciplinary team tested 89 TGW in Buenos Aires. An acceptability survey was administered after the HIV/syphilis Duo test was used. All confirmed cases were referred for treatment initiation. R…

The metabolic syndrome and HIV infection.

2013

The metabolic syndrome (MetS), a cluster of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, has become an important public health problem. Considerable differences in the prevalence of the MetS in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected subjects have been reported, as a consequence of several limitations regarding the diagnostic critera for MetS. New evidence suggests that the use of optimal waist cut-off points specific for the various ethnic populations could represent a step forward in overcoming these limitations. Also the use of specific cut-off points for measuring upper trunk fat as an adjunctive criterion of MetS in HIV patients with lipodystrophy could represent an…

The paper presents the study of the plaster formulated to imitate the natural stones and marbles that are popular in Sicily in the early twentieth century and points out that the first applications and the dissemination of new mortars also in the rest of Italy feels the influence of the experiments conducted throughout Europe . The contribution summarizes the results of a rigorous and thorough reconnaissance of patents kept in the Archivio Centrale dello Stato in Rome relating to mortars for plastering an artificial stone critically analyzes the content and emphasizes cultural contacts with the experiments on large-scale restoration projects in Italy and France in the late nineteenth century. The analysis of the architectural surfaces is developed with instrumental tests: the levels of adhesion of finishing surface are characterized in particular through a campaign of thermographic investigations and diagnosis is drawn to show that the consolidation of the layers and reintegration are interventions to be introduced within the restoration project and maintenance program.Settore ICAR/19 - Restauro

Una storia italiana: Giorgio e Isabella

2018

This paper focuses on the story of two dark-skinned Italians written for Giorgio Marincola by Carlo Costa and Lorenzo Teodonio in Razza partigiana and for his sister Isabella by Wu Ming 2 and Antar Mohamed in Timira. Romanzo meticcio. The events of their lives as well as many other aspects of our colonial neocolonial and postcolonial history have re-emerged from the darkness in which they had been hidden only in the last fifteen years thanks to the reopening of the archives allowing to re-discuss many of the aspects that in the pages of History as well as in those of literature had been told in another way. The two works that could be inserted into the current defined as the "new Italian epic" dismantle a series of clichés and prejudices and invite us to reflect on the concept of Italian identity on colonialism and its consequence in the short and long term and particularly on racism.Settore L-FIL-LET/14 - Critica Letteraria E Letterature Comparate

NFAT transcription factors control HIV-1 expression through a binding site downstream of TAR region.

2004

NFAT factors control HIV-1 transcription. We show here that, in addition to binding to two NF-kappaB/NFAT sites within the U3 HIV LTR, NFATc1 and NFATc2 bind to an NFAT site within the LTR's U5 region. Mutations in this site which abolish NFAT binding reduce the ability of NFATs to transactivate LTR-mediated transcription. Mutations in all three NFAT sites strongly interfered with LTR induction, but affected moderately the stimulatory effect of Tat.
