Statin-induced autoimmune myositis: a proposal of an “experience-based” diagnostic algorithm from the analysis of 69 patients
2023
AbstractStatin-induced autoimmune myositis (SIAM) represents a rare clinical entity that can be triggered by prolonged statin treatment. Its pathogenetic substrate consists of an autoimmune-mediated mechanism, evidenced by the detection of antibodies directed against the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (anti-HMGCR Ab), the target enzyme of statin therapies. To facilitate the diagnosis of nuanced SIAM clinical cases, the present study proposes an “experience-based” diagnostic algorithm for SIAM. We have analyzed the clinical data of 69 patients diagnosed with SIAM. Sixty-seven patients have been collected from the 55 available and complete case records regarding SIAM in the l…
Editorial: Current trends in the treatment of supraventricular tachycardia in pediatric age
2008
In pediatric age supraventricular tachiarrhythmias represent one of the most common cause of admission in cardiology units. Supraventricular arrhythmias may significantly influence the normal growth of a child with significant psycho-social implications. Pediatric cardiologists should be aware about the arrhythmias they face in their clinical practice. Moreover, they should know the possible risks related to specific arrhythmias and use the most efficacious therapeutic strategy with a correct knowledge of antiarrhythmic drugs. In this issue of Current Pharmacological Design the most recent knowledges on pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of supraventricular tachyarrhythmias in pediatr…
Pathological role of IL-6 in the experimental allergic bronchial asthma in mice.
2005
Although allergic asthma was described to be associated with the presence of mucosal T helper (Th)2 cells, it is not entirely clear which factors are responsible for priming of T cells to differentiate into Th2 effector cells in this disease. Interleukin (IL)-6 has been recognized as important because it is secreted by cells of the innate immunity and induces the expansion of the Th2 effector cells, which are major players of the adaptive immune responses. Additionally, IL-6 released by dendritic cells (DCs) inhibits the suppressive function of CD4+CD25+ T regulatory cells, thus inhibiting the peripheral tolerance. The signal transduction of IL-6 has recently taught us how this cytokine inf…

Valorization of Wastewater from Table Olives: NMR Identification of Antioxidant Phenolic Fraction and Microwave Single-Phase Reaction of Sugary Fract…
2021
The table olive industry is producing a huge amount of wastewater, which is a post-processing cost and an environmental concern. The present study aims to valorize this processing by-product to obtain a value-added product, thereby enhancing resource efficiency and contributing to achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). In this sense, a chemical reaction-based platform was developed to obtain valuable components, such as levulinic acid (LA) and 5-hydromethylfurfural (HMF). The products were then analyzed using NMR identification of the antioxidant phenolic fraction and microwave single-phase reaction of the sugary fraction. According to the results, the highest concentration of phen…
Constituents of Peperomia vulcanica Baker & C. H. Wright (Piperaceae) with antiparasitic activity
2021
Abstract The investigation of the CH2Cl2-MeOH (1:1) extract of Peperomia vulcanica which showed antileishmanial activity during preliminary screening led to the isolation of two previously unknown compounds named peperolignan (1) and peperotannin (2) along with 13 known compounds. Their structures were determined on the basis of their spectroscopic data. The isolated compounds were assessed in vitro for their antileishmanial and antiplasmodial activities against Leishmania donovani 1S (MHOM/SD/62/1S) promastigotes and the Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine-sensitive 3D7 strain (Pf3D7), respectively. They were also assessed for their cytotoxicity on Raw 264.7 macrophage cells. The mixture of …
Computer Modeling for the Prediction of Thoracic Aortic Stent Graft Collapse
2011
OBJECTIVE: To assess the biomechanical implications of excessive stent protrusion into the aortic arch in relation to thoracic aortic stent graft (TASG) collapse by simulating the structural load and quantifying the fluid dynamics on the TASG wall protrusion extended into a model arch. METHODS: One-way coupled fluid-solid interaction analyses were performed to investigate the flow-induced hemodynamic and structural loads exerted on the proximal protrusion of the TASG and aortic wall reconstructed from a patient who underwent traumatic thoracic aortic injury repair. Mechanical properties of a Gore TAG thoracic endoprosthesis (W. L. Gore and Assoc, Flagstaff, Ariz) were assessed via experimen…
Real-life assessment of chronic rhinosinusitis patients using mobile technology: the mySinusitisCoach project by EUFOREA
2020
Abstract Background Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with a substantial personal and socioeconomic burden. Monitoring of patient‐reported outcomes by mobile technology offers the possibility to better understand real‐life burden of CRS. Methods This study reports on the cross‐sectional evaluation of data of 626 users of mySinusitisCoach (mSC), a mobile application for CRS patients. Patient characteristics of mSC users were analysed as well as the level of disease control based on VAS global rhinosinusitis symptom score and adapted EPOS criteria. Results The mSC cohort represents a heterogeneous group of CRS patients with a diverse pattern of major sy…
