A number of phonetic and phonological changes have lately been observed in most geographical varieties of British English. This phenomenon seems to have been accelerated by increasing social and geographical mobility in the past decades. Based on a corpus mainly consisting of several hours of spontaneous interaction between a number of native NW Yorkshire speakers divided into different age groups, this research identifies and analyses several segmental and suprasegmental innovations observed in apparent time in a set of accents associated with a circumscribed geographical area. This thesis discusses the motivation behind some of these changes and addresses the question of whether the same …
The Heidelberg retina tomograph ancillary study to the European glaucoma prevention study: study design and baseline factors.
2013
Purpose: To describe the study design and baseline factors of the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph ancillary study within the EGPS. Furthermore, to examine the relationship between HRT optic disc topographic measurements and baseline demographic and ocular factors. Methods: Four hundred and eighty-nine ocular hypertensive participants were included. Each participant completed HRT imaging at least annually. The associations between HRT measurements and IOP, central corneal thickness (CCT), baseline photographic estimates of vertical CDR ratio (CDR), asymmetry between the two eyes in CDR ratio and baseline visual field indices were assessed using regression analysis. Results: Associations between …
Structural and optical properties of novel surfactant-coated Yb-TiO2 nanoparticle
2010
Abstract In this paper a novel hybrid approach to synthesise composite nanoparticles is presented. It is based on the laser ablation of a bulk target (Yb) immersed in a reversed micellar solution which contains nanoparticles of a different host material (TiO2 nanoparticles) previously synthesised by chemical method. This approach thus exploits the advantages of the chemical synthesis through reversed micellar solution (size control, nanoparticle stabilisation), and of the laser ablation (‘‘clean’’ synthesis, no side reactions). Central role is played by the microscopic processes controlling the deposition of the ablated Yb atoms onto the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles which actually behave a…

Effects of transdermal hormone replacement therapy on levels of soluble P- and E-selectin in postmenopausal healthy women
2002
Abstract Objective: To study the adhesion molecule pattern in postmenopausal women who were not receiving hormone replacement therapy (HRT), HRT users, and fertile women. Design: Case-control study. Setting: Second University of Naples, Naples, Italy. Patient(s): Fifty healthy naturally postmenopausal women and 20 fertile women. Intervention(s): Twenty-six women received no HRT and 24 received continuous transdermal 17β−estradiol, 0.05 mg/d, plus oral acetate nomegestrol, 5 mg/d. Main Outcome Measure(s): Levels of the soluble forms of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), E-selectin, and P-selectin. Result(s): Women who did not received HRT …
Long-term effects of oral and transdermal hormone replacement therapy on plasma homocysteine levels.
2003
Objective To compare the long-term effects of oral and transdermal hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on serum homocysteine levels in postmenopausal women. Design An open, prospective, controlled study. Seventy-five healthy postmenopausal women were recruited as eligible for the study. Fifty women seeking HRT were randomized to receive continuous 17beta-estradiol, either by oral (2 mg daily; n = 25) or transdermal (50 microg daily; n = 25) administration, plus 10 mg dydrogesterone daily for 14 days of each 28-day cycle. Twenty-five women unwilling to receive hormone treatment received only calcium supplementation, representing the control group. Fasting blood samples were analyzed at baselin…
Effect of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on periodontal status of postmenopausal women.
2011
Summary Background The risks/benefits balance of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the periodontal status of a postmenopausal women group receiving HRT and to determine the effects of HRT on clinical measures of periodontal disease. Material/Methods Ninety-one postmenopausal women, 52 taking HRT (HRT+) and 39 not taking HRT (HRT−), completed the study. Clinical parameters measured included visible supragingival plaque, probing pocket depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). Gingival status was recorded as gingival bleeding on probing (BOP). Previous oral contraceptive use and current and past smoking status were also assessed. Res…
Italian Association of Sleep Medicine (AIMS) position statement and guideline on the treatment of menopausal sleep disorders
2019
Insomnia, vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and depression often co-occur after the menopause, with consequent health problems and reductions in quality of life. The aim of this position statement is to provide evidence-based advice on the management of postmenopausal sleep disorders derived from a systematic review of the literature. The latter yielded results on VMS, insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and restless leg syndrome (RLS). Overall, the studies show that menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) improves VMS, insomnia, and mood. Several antidepressants can improve insomnia, either on their own or in association with MHT; these include selective serotonin reuptake …
Study of 3D sound for an audio-visual interaction in enriched virtual environment
2011
Most of the applications integrating 3D sound in virtual environment are limited to acoustic simulation. The objective of this thesis is to study the added value of 3D sound in the interaction with virtual environment. We developed an audio stimulation technique called "Artificial Spatial Audio Sensation: (ASAS)" based on the creation of audio effects. This technique conveys the sensations of spatialized sound that allows accurate sound source localization in azimuth and in elevation. In order to improve the localization time we also developed a model that integrates Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) with the ASAS technique. For the simulation of the depth of spatial sound sources, we d…
A new efficient, highly dispersed, Pd nanoparticulate silica supported catalyst synthesized from an organometallic precursor. Study of the homogeneou…
2018
[EN] A new Pd(0) catalyst supported on silica UVM-7 has been synthesized from the organometallic [Pd-2(mu-(C6H4) Pp(2))(2)(CH3CN)(4)](BF4)(2) precursor, characterized by the high dispersion, activity, and small size of the palladium nanoclusters fixed on the silica surface. The catalyst was tested for the Suzuki-Miyaura (SM) reaction of different 4-substitutedphenyl halides with phenylboronic acid. The kinetic study concurs with most of the catalytic action was carried out by Pd species originated by the partial solubilization of Pd immobilized on mesoporous silica. The Schmidt's analysis of differential selectivity (SADS) in several competitive SM reactions, together the STEM-HAADF and HRT…
