Giant hepatocellular adenoma as cause of severe abdominal pain: a case report

Abstract The authors describe the case of a large hepatocellular adenoma diagnosed in a 30-year old woman who came to us complaining of acute pain in the upper abdominal quadrants. The patient had been taking an oral contraceptive pill for the last ten years. We present the clinical features, the diagnostic work-up and the treatment prescribed.

Latin America abortion law is often categorized as seriously restricted. And this is so, partially. Abortion is criminalized if it does not fit in the legal indications (e.g. health risk, rape) contemplated. These indications have not only been one of the most innovative areas to expand access to legal abortion in the region in the last years – including rulings of high courts – but they also question the typical classification of Latin America as an extremely legal constrained setting. DISTRIBUTION OF CARBON STARS IN THE GALAXY

A search for new faint carbon (C) stars in the Polar region δ > 55o has been accomplished by obtaining objective prism spectra in the near infrared 550 -- 900 nm on images of CCD camera of Baldone Schmidt telescope of Astrophysical observatory. The positions of stars   having color indices (J – K) > 1.3 mag in Two Micron All Sky Infrared Survey (2MASS) were selected to pick out suspicious carbon stars.Our survey is limited in brightness by J < 10 mag. 24 new carbon stars were found and their characteristics obtained. The correlative relation between Teff  and spectral gradient [757 – 685] was confirmed. Such characteristics as Teff, distance from the Sun, absolute Mk  were obtained…

Electronic structure of phthalocyanines : Theoretical investigation of the optical properties of phthalocyanine monomers, dimers, and crystals

We present valence effective Hamiltonian (VEH) calculations on the optical absorptions of a series of phthalocyanine compounds: the metal‐free phthalocyanine molecule, a model system for the lithium phthalocyanine molecule, the metal‐free phthalocyanine dimer, and model systems for the lutetium diphthalocyanine and the lithium phthalocyanine crystal. For these compounds, it is found that the major factor influencing the evolution of the optical transitions is not the electronic structure of the metal but rather the geometric structure: phthalocyanine intraring geometry and, in the dimers and crystals, interring separation and staggering angle. Light-induced transmission nonlinearities in gallium selenide

The intensity of a He–Ne laser (633 nm, 5 mW) transmitted by different GaSe samples is observed to change in correlation with a Nd-yttrium–aluminum–garnet laser pulse (532 nm, 7.8 ns, 3 mJ) which excites them. Such time response has been attributed to a nonlinear optical effect, i.e., a decrease in the refractive index due to the exciton screening by the photogenerated carriers. A calculation of the absorption coefficient and refractive index at different carrier concentrations has led to a reconstruction of transmittance transients which fully agree with the experimental data at different incident intensities and temperatures. Molecular balance forms of indium phthalocyanines in benzene and pyridine solution

Abstract The electronic absorption spectra of In2Pc3, InPc2 and InPcI solid compounds after dissolvation in one of the most commonly used solvents, i.e.: benzene and pyridine have been measured. In benzene, the molecules of the diindium tripledecker phthalocyanine, In2Pc3, undergoes transformation to ionic couples [InPc]+[InPc2]-, whereas when the InPc2 compound is dissolvated, the molecules of the indium sandwiches, InPc2, remain relatively stable in the solvent. Interactions of amino acids with aluminum octacarboxyphthalocyanine hydroxide. Experimental and DFT studies

The influence of albumin and amino acids (l-serine, glycine, l-histidine, l-tryptophan, l-cysteine) on the properties of aluminum octacarboxyphthalocyanine hydroxide (Al(OH)PcOC) was investigated in a phosphate buffer (pH 8.0). Particular attention was paid to the spectroscopic properties and photostability of Al(OH)PcOC. The effect of albumin or amino acids on the photodegradation of Al(OH)PcOC was examined in water using red light: 685 nm and daylight irradiation. Abstract The DNA-binding of two salphen-like metal complexes of nickel(II) (1) and zinc(II) (2) was investigated in different ionic strength solutions by absorption spectroscopy. The data analysis allowed us to obtain the values of their extrapolated DNA-binding constant in physiological conditions, with DNA-binding strength in the order Ni > Zn, and to give relative weight to the electrostatic and non-electrostatic contributions to their DNA-interaction.
