Emulation as an Accurate Alternative to Interpolation in Sampling Radiative Transfer Codes

2018

Computationally expensive radiative transfer models (RTMs) are widely used to realistically reproduce the light interaction with the earth surface and atmosphere. Because these models take long processing time, the common practice is to first generate a sparse look-up table (LUT) and then make use of interpolation methods to sample the multidimensional LUT input variable space. However, the question arise whether common interpolation methodsperform most accurate. As an alternative to interpolation, this paper proposes to use emulation, i.e., approximating the RTM output by means of the statistical learning. Two experiments were conducted to assess the accuracy in delivering spectral outputs…

Depth-Adapted CNN for RGB-D cameras

2020

Conventional 2D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) extract features from an input image by applying linear filters. These filters compute the spatial coherence by weighting the photometric information on a fixed neighborhood without taking into account the geometric information. We tackle the problem of improving the classical RGB CNN methods by using the depth information provided by the RGB-D cameras. State-of-the-art approaches use depth as an additional channel or image (HHA) or pass from 2D CNN to 3D CNN. This paper proposes a novel and generic procedure to articulate both photometric and geometric information in CNN architecture. The depth data is represented as a 2D offset to adapt …

Weighting non-covalent forces in the molecular recognition of C60. Relevance of concave–convex complementarity

2008

The relative contributions of several weak intermolecular forces to the overall stability of the complexes formed between structurally related receptors and [60]fullerene are compared, revealing a discernible contribution from concave–convex complementarity. Uutinen nimeltä viides valtiomahti : suomalaisen sanomalehdistön välittämä kuva Facebookin ad hoc -ryhmistä

2013

William H. Duttonin käsite verkostoituneista kansalaisista viidentenä valtiomahtina löi Suomessa läpi 2010-luvun alussa. Tiedotusvälineissä tämä näkyy kahdella tapaa: ensinnäkin yhä useampi uutisaihe on tavallisten ihmisten esille nostama, toiseksi median toimintaa seurataan entistä tarkemmin. Neljäs valtiomahti on siis saanut oman vahtikoiransa, sosiaalisessa mediassa verkostoituneet ihmiset.

2016

Sosiaalisen median aikakausi on muovannut aktiivisista internetin käyttäjistä viidennen valtiomahdin. Näistä kansan yhteenliittymistä on tullut yhteiskunnallisiin asioihin kantaaottava koneisto, jonka toimintaan on syytä pureutua tarkemmin. Pro gradu -työni tarkastelee Facebookissa toimivia tiettyä tarkoitusta varten perustettuja ad hoc ryhmiä ja sitä, millaisia mahdollisuuksia niillä on toimia kansalaisvaikuttamisen väylinä. Lähestyin aihetta s…

The Lightfield Microscope Eyepiece

2021

Lightfield microscopy has raised growing interest in the last few years. Its ability to get three-dimensional information about the sample in a single shot makes it suitable for many applications in which time resolution is fundamental. In this paper we present a novel device, which is capable of converting any conventional microscope into a lightfield microscope. Based on the Fourier integral microscope concept, we designed the lightfield microscope eyepiece. This is coupled to the eyepiece port, to let the user exploit all the host microscope’s components (objective turret, illumination systems, translation stage, etc.) and get a 3D reconstruction of the sample. After the optical design, …

Property prices index numbers and derived indices

2014

Purpose – A useful instrument to understand and examine the inner workings of the property trade is devising index numbers of property prices based on historical sequences of market prices. The present work aims at the definition of index numbers of property prices, proposing an innovative methodology compared with what usually recurs in literature. The purpose of this paper is to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The analysis proposed, based on the mechanisms of formation of stock indices, investigates the analogies between stock and property information, according to the peculiarities of the property trade, leading to a methodology approach, derived from Simple Price In…

University Hospital Fire Disaster — Lessons to Learn

1995

Reports on hospital fire disasters are only rarely published in medical journals, and then only in journals dealing with fire fighting or hospital management. Blumenhagen found only two English language articles published between 1977 and 1987, according to which 24 500 severe events were registered in the USA, equalling three events per institution per year. However, only 30–40% of these events were reported to the fire department. In the USA only 11% of all registered events caused damage amounting to more than US$ 1 000 000.

Simplified methods for spatial sampling: application to first-phase data of Italian National Forest Inventory (INFC) in Sicily

2006

Abstract: Methodological approaches able to integrate data from sample plots with cartographic processes are widely applied. Based on mathematic-statistical techniques, the spatial analysis allows the exploration and spatialization of geographic data. Starting from the punctual information on land use types obtained from the dataset of the first phase of the ongoing new Italian NFI (INFC), a spatialization of land cover classes was carried out using the Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) method. In order to validate the obtained results, an overlay with other vectorial land use data was carried out. In particular, the overlay compared data at different scales, evaluating differences in terms …
