Energy criteria of multiaxial fatigue failure

This paper contains a review of energy-based criteria of multiaxial fatigue. The criteria have been divided into three groups, depending on the kind of strain energy density per cycle which is assumed as a damage parameter. They are: (i) criteria based on elastic strain energy for high-cycle fatigue; (ii) criteria based on plastic strain energy for low-cycle fatigue; and (iii) criteria based on the sum of plastic and elastic strain energies for both low- and high-cycle fatigue. The criteria which take into account strain energy density in the critical plane seem to be the most promising. Nonlinear vibrations and hysteresis of micromachined silicon resonators designed as frequency-out sensors

Experimental observation of nonlinear vibrations and hysteresis of micromachined silicon resonators is reported. The experimental results are explained using a simple model in which the restoring force acting in the resonator contains a small cubic term. The effects will impose a limit to the maximum amplitude which can be excited while still maintaining reliability of these devices as frequency-out sensors.

Exchange bias (EB) effect has been vigorously researched for many years due to its possible applications in information storage and spintronics, especially in spin valves for magnetic recording devices. Viscoelasticity of pore-spanning polymer membranes derived from giant polymersomes

We show how the viscoelastic properties of membranes formed from poly(butadiene)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PB130-b-PEO66) block copolymers can be locally accessed by atomic force microscopy. Polymer membranes are spread on microstructured porous silicon substrates from PB130-b-PEO66 vesicles by decreasing the osmotic pressure of the solution. Local viscoelastic properties of the pore-spanning polymer membranes were obtained from site-specific indentation experiments. Elastic moduli of these membranes were in the order of few MPa, while the elastic moduli of cross-linked membranes considerably increased to few GPa. The phase diagram of Ti-6Al-4V at high-pressures and high-temperatures.

Abstract We report results from a series of diamond-anvil-cell synchrotron x-ray diffraction and large-volume-press experiments, and calculations, to investigate the phase diagram of commercial polycrystalline high-strength Ti-6Al-4V alloy in pressure–temperature space. Up to ∼30 GPa and 886 K, Ti-6Al-4V is found to be stable in the hexagonal-close-packed, or α phase. The effect of temperature on the volume expansion and compressibility of α–Ti-6Al-4V is modest. The martensitic α → ω (hexagonal) transition occurs at ∼30 GPa, with both phases coexisting until at ∼38–40 GPa the transition to the ω phase is completed. Effect of humidity on the hysteresis of single walled carbon nanotube field-effect transistors

Single walled carbon nanotube field-effedt transistores (SWCNT FETs) are attributed as possible building blocks for future molecular electronics. But often these transistors seem to randomly display hysteresis in their transfer characteristics. One reason for this is suggested to be water molecules adsorbed to the surface of the gate dielectric in this study we investigate the thysteresis of SWCNT FETs at different relative humidities. We find that SWCNT FETs having atomic layer deposited (ALD) Hf0 2 -Ti0 2 .- Hf0 2 as a gate dielectric retain their. ambient condition hysteresis better in dry N2 environment than the more commonly used SiO 2 gate oxide.

Energy of dendritic avalanches in thin-film superconductors

A method for calculating stored magnetic energy in a thin superconducting film based on quantitative magneto-optical imaging is developed. Energy and magnetic moment are determined with these calculations for full hysteresis loops in a thin film of the superconductor NbN. Huge losses in energy are observed when dendritic avalanches occur. Magnetic energy, magnetic moment, sheet current and magnetic flux distributions, all extracted from the same calibrated magneto-optical images, are analyzed and discussed. Abstract The magnetic properties of the family of layered molecular magnets A[FeIIMIII(ox)3] (MIII=Cr, Fe, Ru; ox=oxalate; A+=[NBu4]+, [ CoCp 2 ∗ ] + ) are reported. In particular, a detailed magnetic study of the solid solutions FeII(RuIIICrIII) and FeII(RuIIIFeIII) has been undertaken. We show that in these magnets both, transition temperatures and coercive fields, can be easily tuned by changing the chemical composition of the material, i.e. the ratio RuIII/MIII (MIII=Cr, Fe) within the magnetic layers and the type of cation A+ inserted in between the layers. Coercive fields as high as 2.2 T have been reached in this way.

Electrical Bistability around Room Temperature in an Unprecedented One-Dimensional Coordination Magnetic Polymer

The synthesis, crystal structure, and physical properties of an unprecedented one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymer containing [Fe2(S2C6H2Cl2)4](2-) entities bridged by dicationic [K2(μ-H2O)2(THF)4](2+) units are described. The magnetic properties show that the title compound presents pairwise Fe-Fe antiferromagnetic interactions that can be well reproduced with a S = 1/2 dimer model with an exchange coupling, J = -23 cm(-1). The electrical conductivity measurements show that the title compound is a semiconductor with an activation energy of about 290 meV and two different transitions, both with large hysteresis of about 60 and 30 K at 260-320 K and 350-380 K, respectively.
