Non-Invasive Investigation of Pigments of Wall Painting in S. Maria Delle Palate di Tusa (Messina, Italy)
2019
The characterization of materials used in the archaeological field needs an experimental approach in order to avoid the destruction or perturbation of artworks. In order to afford this purpose, a multi-analytical spectroscopic approach is regularly used. We combined non-invasive analysis by using handheld spectroscopic instrumentations (mainly XRF and Raman spectrometers) in order to characterize the wall painting preserved in the church of S. Maria delle Palate at Halaesa Arconidea archeological site (Tusa, Messina, Italy). The aim of the work is the characterization of the nature of pigments used for the realization of the wall painting. The wall painting, probably representing St. Franci…
Telerilevamento di aree archeologiche mediante dati iperspettrali MIVIS” (Remote sensing of archaelogical areas using hyperspectral MIVIS data)
2004
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between physical parameters and the spatial distribution of buried archaeological structures, using data acquired by the airborne hyperspectral sensor mivis in the visible, near infrared and thermal infrared wavelengths. The study areas are the territories of Halaesa, an important city in the Hellenistic-Roman period, and the Punic city of Mozia in Sicily. The influence of buried structures on thermal-radiative behaviour has been investigated using three parameters: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (ndvi), thermal inertia, and Thermal Balanced Gradient. These techniques are shown to be particularly effective in identifying surface p…
Paesaggio e memorie dell'antico: dall'archeologia all'arte contemporanea
2021
The aim of this paper is to compare different perceptions of cultural landscapes: the landscape of a Hellenistic-Roman city, Halaesa, reconstructed through archaeological surveys, and the contemporary landscape – natural and cultural – that characterizes the Tusa river, so-called “Fiumara d’arte”, where some installations of modern art have been made. Here the modern art is integrated with the landscape, in which it seems to emphasize some peculiar aspects, result of complex interactions. This analysis allow us to use the archaeological data to understand the relationship between human activities the symbolic aspects which connect ancient and modern communities to their territories.
The paper examines a togated statue found on the site of Halaesa before the start of scientific investigations and carries out a re-contextualization, on the basis of the analysis of iconography, style and antiquarian data, in the bed of middle-imperial portraiture. The…

Le risorse idriche nel territorio di Alesa
2022
The contribution examines the complex archaeological data produced by the survey carried out in the region of Alesa, in an attempt to recognise the essential elements of the system of collection and distribution of water in rural settlements. The archaeological data are integrated with what can be obtained from the well-known ‘Table of Alesa’, and with other toponymical, environmental, morphological, and geological information. The results are compared with known data in areas with similar characteristics along the northern coast of Sicily.
Halaesa Arconidea (Tusa, Messina). Primi risultati dagli scavi delle fortificazioni, settore nord-est.

The Church of S. Maria Delle Palate in Tusa (Messina, Italy): Digitization and Diagnostics for a New Model of Enjoyment
2022
Cultural places represent the tangible part of the identity and historical heritage of a civilization as well as an extraordinary driving force for the economic development of a country. Within its huge asset, Italy counts a wide number of archaeological sites and monuments which, despite their cultural value, are totally cut off from the most important cultural routes. This paper aims to demonstrate how specific actions of digitization can contribute to valorize (restoring a cultural value) ‘marginal’ landmarks, promoting their knowledge and inclusion. The case study described is represented by the Church of “Santa Maria delle Palate”, located inside the well-known …
