Single step deposition of an interacting layer of a perovskite matrix with embedded quantum dots
2016
Hybrid lead halide perovskite (PS) derivatives have emerged as very promising materials for the development of optoelectronic devices in the last few years. At the same time, inorganic nanocrystals with quantum confinement (QDs) possess unique properties that make them suitable materials for the development of photovoltaics, imaging and lighting applications, among others. In this work, we report on a new methodology for the deposition of high quality, large grain size and pinhole free PS films (CH3NH3PbI3) with embedded PbS and PbS/CdS core/shell Quantum Dots (QDs). The strong interaction between both semiconductors is revealed by the formation of an exciplex state, which is monitored by p…
Creation and Annihilation of Nonradiative Recombination Centers in Polycrystalline Metal Halide Perovskites by Alternating Electric Field and Light
2019
Metal halide perovskites are promising optoelectronic materials. Their electronic properties however are rather unstable which is often assigned to ion migration. Ion migration can be readily influenced by an electric field (EF). Here, the response of photoluminescence (PL) of individual MAPbX3 (MA = CH3NH3, X = I, Br) sub-micrometer-sized polycrystals to EF is studied. Alternating EF with frequency higher than 10 Hz is found to reversibly quench PL. It is proposed that an alternating EF when applied together with light increases ion migration. This leads to a shift in the equilibrium between creation and annihilation of defects toward higher concentration of nonradiative recombination cent…
Solvent-Free Synthesis and Thin-Film Deposition of Cesium Copper Halides with Bright Blue Photoluminescence
2019
Non-toxic alternatives to lead halide perovskites are highly sought after for applications in optoelectronics. Blue-luminescent materials are especially demanded as they could be used to prepare white light-emitting diodes, with important potential applications in lighting systems. However, wide bandgap blue emitters with high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) are typically more difficult to obtain as compared to green- or red-emitting ones. Here, we prepared two series of inorganic cesium copper halides, with the general formulas Cs3Cu2X5 and CsCu2X3 (X = Cl, Br, I, and mixtures thereof) by dry mechanochemical synthesis at room temperature. X-ray diffraction demonstrates quantitative…
Degradation mechanisms in organic lead halide perovskite light-emitting diodes
2019
Organic–inorganic metal halide perovskites have attracted significant attention for low-cost, high-efficiency, color-pure light-emitting applications. However, as seen in many reports so-far, perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLED) suffer from poor operational lifetime, limiting their practical use. The underlying degradation mechanism is a topic of crucial importance. Here, the degradation mechanisms of methylammonium lead bromide based PeLED are investigated. When the PeLED is electrically biased, there is an initial raise in the luminance followed by a rapid reduction in luminance and current density. Microscopic studies reveal the formation of micrometer-sized spots that are photolumin…
Study of the Partial Substitution of Pb by Sn in Cs-Pb-Sn-Br Nanocrystals Owing to Obtaining Stable Nanoparticles with Excellent Optical Properties.
2018
Halide perovskites are revolutionizing the photovoltaic and optoelectronic fields with outstanding performances obtained in a remarkably short time. However, two major challenges remain: the long-term stability and the Pb content, due to its toxicity. Despite the great effort carried out to substitute the Pb by a less hazardous element, lead-free perovskite still remains more unstable than lead-containing perovskites and presents lower performance as well. In this work, we demonstrate the colloidal preparation of Cs–Pb–Sn–Br nanoparticles (NPs) where Sn is incorporated up to 18.8%. Significantly, we have demonstrated that the partial substitution of Pb by Sn does not produce a deleterious e…
Surface modification of all-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals
2021
Abstract Newly emerged all-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals have shown unprecedented optical properties for a variety of display applications. Their superior optical properties over traditional semiconductor nanocrystals have opened a new paradigm in luminescent materials research. Because of their defect tolerance, the photoluminescent quantum yield of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals can reach near-unity. However, the ionic character of these nanocrystals causes extreme lability, which deteriorates its structural and optical properties. Moreover, the binding ability of surface ligands are quite weak and thus easily desorb during conventional purification techniques. Despit…
Incorporation of potassium halides in the mechanosynthesis of inorganic perovskites: feasibility and limitations of ion-replacement and trap passivat…
2018
Potassium halides (KX; X = I, Br, or Cl) were incorporated as partial replacements of CsBr in the mechanosynthesis of CsPbBr3. This led to partial substitution of both monovalent ions forming mixed Cs1−xKxPbBr3−yXy perovskites. Longer photoluminescence lifetimes were also observed, possibly linked to the formation of a non-perovskite KPb2X5 passivating layer.
Highly photoluminescent, dense solid films from organic-capped CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite colloids
2018
The preparation of densely-packed films from hybrid lead halide perovskite nanocrystals is not trivial, as during assembly into the solid state both the charge transport and photoluminescence can be substantially altered. The objective of the present study was to retain the pre-engineered confined morphologies of hybrid lead halide perovskite nanocrystals in densely-packed solid films by using short organic ligands. Therefore, the roles of the organic ligands would be to provide stable colloids and a good passivation of the nanoparticle surface, as well as to enable the efficient assembly of the nanoparticles in the solid state. We report here an effective and reproducible process to deposi…
Short photoluminescence lifetimes in vacuum-deposited ch3nh3pbI3 perovskite thin films as a result of fast diffusion of photogenerated charge carriers
2019
It is widely accepted that a long photoluminescence (PL) lifetime in metal halide perovskite films is a crucial and favorable factor, as it ensures a large charge diffusion length leading to a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) in solar cells. It has been recently found that vacuumevaporated CH3NH3PbI3 (eMAPI) films show very short PL lifetimes of several nanoseconds. The corresponding solar cells, however, have high photovoltage (>1.1 V) and PCEs (up to 20%). We rationalize this apparent contradiction and show that eMAPI films are characterized by a very high diffusion coefficient D, estimated from modeling the PL kinetics to exceed 1 cm2/s. Such high D values are favorable for long di…
Radiation creation of cation defects in alkali halide crystals: Review and today's concept (Review Article)
2018
Irradiation of alkali halide crystals creates pairs of Frenkel defects both in anion and cation sublattices. However, the particular nonimpact creation mechanisms (related to the decay of different electronic excitations) of cation Frenkel pairs are still unclear. At helium temperatures, there is yet no direct evidences of the creation of stable (long-lived) elemental cation defects. On the other hand, a number of complex structural defects containing cation vacancies and/or interstitials, were detected after irradiation of alkali halides at higher temperatures. Besides already proved mechanism related to the association of H and VK centers into trihalide molecules, the following possibilit…
