Electronic structure of quantum dots

2002

The properties of quasi-two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots are reviewed. Experimental techniques for measuring the electronic shell structure and the effect of magnetic fields are briefly described. The electronic structure is analyzed in terms of simple single-particle models, density-functional theory, and "exact" diagonalization methods. The spontaneous magnetization due to Hund's rule, spin-density wave states, and electron localization are addressed. As a function of the magnetic field, the electronic structure goes through several phases with qualitatively different properties. The formation of the so-called maximum-density droplet and its edge reconstruction is discussed, and…

Pfaffian and fragmented states atν=52in quantum Hall droplets

2008

When a gas of electrons is confined to two dimensions, application of a strong magnetic field may lead to startling phenomena such as emergence of electron pairing. According to a theory this manifests itself as appearance of the fractional quantum Hall effect with a quantized conductivity at an unusual half-integer v=5/2 Landau level filling. Here we show that similar electron pairing may occur in quantum dots where the gas of electrons is trapped by external electric potentials into small quantum Hall droplets. However, we also find theoretical and experimental evidence that, depending on the shape of the external potential, the paired electron state can break down, which leads to a fragm…

Unified model of fractal conductance fluctuations for diffusive and ballistic semiconductor devices

2006

We present an experimental comparison of magnetoconductance fluctuations measured in the ballistic, quasiballistic, and diffusive scattering regimes of semiconductor devices. In contradiction to expectations, we show that the spectral content of the magnetoconductance fluctuations exhibits an identical fractal behavior for these scattering regimes and that this behavior is remarkably insensitive to device boundary properties. We propose a unified model of fractal conductance fluctuations in the ballistic, quasiballistic, and diffusive transport regimes, in which the generic fractal behavior is generated by a subtle interplay between boundary and material-induced chaotic scattering events.

Electronic and acoustic-phonon inter-Landau-level Raman scattering in GaAs/AlxGa1−xAs multiple quantum wells

1995

We present an experimental study of inter-Landau-level excitations in undoped GaAs/${\mathrm{Al}}_{\mathit{x}}$${\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$As multiple quantum wells in high magnetic fields by means of Raman scattering. The experiments were performed in Faraday backscattering geometry with the field along the growth axis, using circularly polarized light for resonant excitation of low-index magneto-optical transitions between Landau levels. We observe two types of peaks. One of them, present in both Stokes and anti-Stokes regions at a constant Raman shift, corresponds to the electron cyclotron energy. We attribute it to electronic Raman scattering from a quasistationa…

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction and Hall Effects in the Skyrmion Phase ofMn1−xFexGe

2015

We carry out density functional theory calculations which demonstrate that the electron dynamics in the Skyrmion phase of Fe-rich Mn_{1-x}Fe_{x}Ge alloys is governed by Berry phase physics. We observe that the magnitude of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction directly related to the mixed space-momentum Berry phases, changes sign and magnitude with concentration x in direct correlation with the data of Shibata et al. [Nat. Nanotechnol. 8, 723 (2013)]. The computed anomalous and topological Hall effects in FeGe are also in good agreement with available experiments. We further develop a simple tight-binding model able to explain these findings. Finally, we show that the adiabatic Berry phase…

Theory of Kondo suppression of spin polarization in nonlocal spin valves

2016

We theoretically analyze contributions from the Kondo effect to the spin polarization and spin diffusion length in all-metal nonlocal spin valves. Interdiffusion of ferromagnetic atoms into the normal metal layer creates a region in which Kondo physics plays a significant role, giving discrepancies between experiment and existing theory. We start from a simple model and construct a modified spin drift-diffusion equation which clearly demonstrates how the Kondo physics not only suppresses the electrical conductivity but even more strongly reduces the spin diffusion length. We also present an explicit expression for the suppression of spin polarization due to Kondo physics in an illustrative …

Orientation-dependent direct and inverse spin Hall effects in Co60Fe20B20

2019

The spin Hall effect is a key element of various spintronics applications. Here, the authors study the orientation-dependent interconversion of spin and charge information in Co${}_{60}$Fe${}_{20}$B${}_{20}$. In a nonlocal magnon transport using Y${}_{3}$Fe${}_{5}$O${}_{12}$ as a spin conduit, the spin Hall effect amplitude depends on the relative alignment between the Y${}_{3}$Fe${}_{5}$O${}_{12}$ and Co${}_{60}$Fe${}_{20}$B${}_{20}$ magnetization vectors. In order to suppress direct magnonic contributions so as to study the electronic origin of this effect, Y${}_{3}$Fe${}_{5}$O${}_{12}$ and Co${}_{60}$Fe${}_{20}$B${}_{20}$ are exchange-decoupled by a Cu interlayer.

The influence of disorder on the exciton spectra in two-dimensional structures

2019

We study the role of disorder in the exciton spectra in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors. These can be heterostructures, thin films and multilayers (so-called van der Waals structures) of organometallic perovskites, transition metal dichalcogenides and other semiconductors for optoelectronic applications. We model the disorder by introduction of a fractional Laplacian (with Le´vy index m, defining the degree of disorder) to the Scro¨dinger equation with 2D Coulomb potential. Combining analytical and numerical methods, we observe that the exciton exists only for m 4 1, while the point m = 1 (strongest disorder) corresponds to the exciton collapse. We show also that in the fractional (diso…

Chiral Hall Effect in Noncollinear Magnets from a Cyclic Cohomology Approach

2020

We demonstrate the emergence of an anomalous Hall effect in chiral magnetic textures which is neither proportional to the net magnetization nor to the well-known emergent magnetic field that is responsible for the topological Hall effect. Instead, it appears already at linear order in the gradients of the magnetization texture and exists for one-dimensional magnetic textures such as domain walls and spin spirals. It receives a natural interpretation in the language of Alain Connes' noncommutative geometry. We show that this chiral Hall effect resembles the familiar topological Hall effect in essential properties while its phenomenology is distinctly different. Our findings make the reinterp…

Background charge fluctuations in SET-transistors

1996

We have studied fluctuations of background charges in single electron tunnelling (SET) transistors. Changes in the charge distribution of the substrate and other dielectric materials near the transistor cause uncontrolled changes in its conductivity. We have observed big differences in the type and frequency of the conductivity fluctuations between different samples, but no systematic dependence on the substrate material has been found. To obtain information about the location of the source of the charge noise, we performed coincidence measurements on two separate SET transistors which were made very near to each other. The results suggest that the conductivity fluctuations are caused by ch…
