Superfluorinated ionic liquid crystals based on supramolecular, halogen-bonded anions

2016

Unconventional ionic liquid crystals in which the liquid crystallinity is enabled by halogen-bonded supramolecular anions [CnF2 n+1-I⋯I⋯I-CnF2 n+1]- are reported. The material system is unique in many ways, demonstrating for the first time 1) ionic, halogen-bonded liquid crystals, and 2) imidazolium-based ionic liquid crystals in which the occurrence of liquid crystallinity is not driven by the alkyl chains of the cation. Out of the ordinary: The high directionality of halogen bonds and the fluorophobic effect were exploited in the design and synthesis of a new family of unconventional superfluorinated ionic liquid crystals. The liquid crystallinity of the system is driven by halogen-bonded…

Short X···N Halogen Bonds With Hexamethylenetetraamine as the Acceptor

2021

Hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) and N-haloimides form two types of short (imide)X···N and X–X···N (X = Br, I) halogen bonds. Nucleophilic substitution or ligand-exchange reaction on the peripheral X of X–X···N with the chloride of N-chlorosuccinimide lead to Cl–X···N halogen-bonded complexes. The 1:1 complexation of HMTA and ICl manifests the shortest I···N halogen bond [2.272(5) Å] yet reported for an HMTA acceptor. Two halogen-bonded organic frameworks are prepared using 1:4 molar ratio of HMTA and N-bromosuccinimide, each with a distinct channel shape, one possessing oval and the other square grid. The variations in channel shapes are due to tridentate and tetradentate (imide)Br···N coordi…

Halogen effect on structure and 13C NMR chemical shift of 3,6-disubstituted-N-alkyl carbazoles

2013

Structures of selected 3,6-dihalogeno-N-alkyl carbazole derivatives were calculated at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,2pd) level of theory, and their 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) isotropic shieldings were predicted using density functional theory (DFT). The model compounds contained 9H, N-methyl and N-ethyl derivatives. The relativistic effect of Br and I atoms on nuclear shieldings was modeled using the spin–orbit zeroth-order regular approximation (ZORA) method. Significant heavy atom shielding effects for the carbon atom directly bonded with Br and I were observed (~−10 and ~−30 ppm while the other carbon shifts were practically unaffected). The decreasing electronegativity of the haloge…

N-(2,3,5,6-Tetrafluoropyridyl)sulfoximines: synthesis, X-ray crystallography, and halogen bonding

2020

In the presence of KOH, NH-sulfoximines react with pentafluoropyridine to give N-(tetrafluoropyridyl)sulfoximines (NTFP-sulfoximines) in moderate to excellent yields. Either a solution-based or a superior solvent-free mechanochemical protocol can be followed. X-Ray diffraction analyses of 26 products provided insight into the bond parameters and conformational rigidity of the molecular scaffold. In solid-state structures, sulfoximines with halo substituents on the S-bound arene are intermolecularly linked by C–X⋯OS (X = Cl, Br) halogen bonds. Hirshfeld surface analysis is used to assess the type of non-covalent contacts present in molecules. For mixtures of three different S-pyridyl-substit…

Endohedral Mixed Aggregates: Sodium Alkoxide Cages with Organic or Inorganic Central Anions and Variable Hull.

2021

Abstract Alkali metal alkoxides are widely used in chemistry due to their Brønsted basic and nucleophilic properties. Potassium alkoxides assist alkyllithium in the metalation of hydrocarbons in Lochmann‐Schlosser‐bases. Both compounds form mixed aggregates, which enhance the thermal stability, solubility, and the basic reactivity of these mixtures. A very unusual spherical mixed alkoxy aggregate was discovered by Grützmacher et al., where a central dihydrogen phosphide anion is surrounded by a highly dynamic shell of thirteen sodium atoms and a hull of twelve tert‐butoxide groups. This structural motif can be reproduced by a reaction of trimethylsilyl compounds of methane, halogens, or pse…

Halogen activation in the plume of Masaya volcano: field observations and box model investigations

2020

Volcanic emissions are a source of halogens in the atmosphere. Rapid reactions convert the initially emitted hydrogen halides (HCl, HBr, and HI) into reactive species such as BrO, Br2, BrCl, ClO, OClO, and IO. The activation reaction mechanisms in the plume consume ozone (O3), which is entrained by ambient air that is mixed into the plume. In this study, we present observations of the oxidation of bromine, chlorine, and iodine during the first 11 min following emission, examining the plume from Santiago crater of the Masaya volcano in Nicaragua. Two field campaigns were conducted: one in July 2016 and one in September 2016. The sum of the reactive species of each halogen was determined by g…

Acid-mediated reaction of bis(pyridine)iodonium(I) tetrafluoroborate with aromatic compounds. A selective and general iodination method

1993

Reaction of aromatic compounds with bis(pyridine)iodonium(I) tetrafluoroborate (IPy2BF4) in the presence of HBF4 or CF3SO3H in CH2Cl2 at room temperature furnishes monoiodo derivatives with excellent regioselectivity and yields. Use of either acid gives comparable results with activated aromatics, whereas CF3SO3H is much more effective in the iodination of deactivated aromatics. © 1993 American Chemical Society.

Halogenated (arylsulfanyl)pyridines syntheses and their derivatives by C-S and C-X couplings catalyzed by palladium complexes

2018

C–H activation of aryl compounds directed by 2-sulfonylpyridine and 2-sulfanylpyridine moiety for the formation of C–X (X = F, Cl, Br, I) bonds was studied. First, the syntheses of thioethers (2-(arylsulfanyl)pyridines) and sulfones (2-(arylsulfonyl)pyridines) were necessary for the progress of this project. A C–S coupling catalyzed by palladium complexe between thioaryls and halogenated heterocycles was performed for the synthesis of thioethers. The cheap ligand bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) was used for this convenient reaction. Then, oxidation of thioethers was performed to synthesize sulfones. Halogenation of these compounds was studied with ortho-directed C–H activation cataly…

Contrast sensitivity and glare disability by halogen light after monofocal and multifocal lens implantation

2000

BACKGROUND—Standard examination of contrast sensitivity under conditions of glare disability is performed with incandescent light. A new halogen glare test that simulates glare as seen with oncoming vehicle headlights was used to measure glare disability in patients implanted with multifocal and monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs). METHODS—28 patients with an average age of 69 years (SD 12 years) were implanted with a monofocal IOL (SI-40NB, Allergan) and 28 patients with an average of 66 years (12 years) were implanted with a refractive multifocal IOL (Array-SA-40N, Allergan). All patients were followed for 5 months postoperatively. Contrast sensitivity at four spatial frequencies (3, 6, 1…
